“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness” Review by Suzanne 5/10/21

If you loved the first season of “The Alienist,” then you’ll probably love this sequel as well. The first season was about finding a serial killer who killed young boy prostitutes. This season is about finding a killer of kidnapped babies.

Daniel BrĂĽh (Laszlo), Dakota Fanning (Sara) and Luke Evans (John) reprise their roles as the investigators into these grisly deaths. Women’s advocate Sara is running her own detective agency. Handsome reporter Luke uses his newspaper work to highlight important issues and brilliant-but-odd Laszlo is still an alienist (psychiatrist). A young woman is put to death in the first episode – the first woman to die from the new electric chair. Her child vanished, so she was accused of murdering it (even though there was no body). Laszlo is the only one who believes that she’s innocent.

When another child is taken, and the first woman’s baby turns up dead, the trio must race against time to try to find out who the kidnapper/murderer is before more babies are killed.

Sarah has great chemistry with both men, so there is a lot of sexual tension going on. The great thing about this show is that they use the crimes and the period to showcase issues that are still important today, such as the death penalty, women’s rights and class divisions. They also do a great job of showing what life was like back then. The details are really good.

I hope that TNT brings it back for a third season. Enjoy this DVD, which has some great features. You don’t need to watch the first season to enjoy this season season, but I do urge you to watch it first and get to know what these characters have gone through beforehand.

It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends–high-living crime reporter John Schuyler Moore; indomitable, derringer-toting Sara Howard; the brilliant (and bickering) detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; powerful and compassionate Cyrus Montrose; and Stevie Taggert, the boy Kreizler saved from a life of street crime–have returned to their former pursuits and tried to forget the horror of the Beecham case. But when the distraught wife of a Spanish diplomat begs Sara’s aid, the team reunites to help find her kidnapped infant daughter. It is a case fraught with danger since Spain and the United States are on the verge of war.
