THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!
You’re suing me?
This feels different.
You think he’s in trouble? We’ll figure it out together. And all you have to do is sign. I can’t. I’m done with modeling.
Nicole: You can draw your own map. Do Dani. Oh, so you and Tomas are chatting it up? Except for that little witch Eva. Are you looking for something? Oh, just a text from Eva– I mean Chels. Now, those are the last two that I think that you would get confused. Hairdresser, one. Bougie bitch from behind the gates, zero.
Nicole: Give me a quick sec. It is going to be our best year yet. All right, I have the financials right here. Uh… That hits the spot. I mean, that is spot-on. On– Yep, on track. [laughs] On track to meet the goals for the foundation. You know what? I am going to have Eva follow up. Okay, bye. My biggest donor now thinks I’m orgasmic about our Excel report. What’s the greatest thing about having a home office? Our bedroom’s upstairs. Mm. You’re such a wise woman. [laughing] We have appointments. Let them wait.
Mmm.
[chuckles] I’ll come back. [laughing]: It’s all right, Eva. I just added three potential donors to the foundation’s list. Can you make sure that they all get welcome packets? I’m on it. Perfect. And if you have any questions, text. I have a meeting with Dani at the hospital. That’s where I’m meeting Andre. Ride together? You two are adorable. Oh, we are late, and it’s his fault. Goodbye. All righty. You’ve got some explaining to do. Is the doctor in? I’m early. Hi, Dani. I haven’t seen your sister, but let me check for you. Thank you, Shanice. How you doing, Ms. Dupree? Oh, I like how you dodged the Mrs. Hamilton there after calling me that for so many years. You don’t have to tiptoe around me, Ashley. I’m good. How’s my daughter? You’ve probably seen more of Naomi than I have lately. Actually, we’ve both been working a lot recently, so I haven’t seen much of her either. How is the new job treating you? You’re working those scrubs, girl. Thanks. Is being a nurse all you hoped for? I always imagine it like, like on TV with McDreamies and McSteamies and sexy moments behind every corner. Nicole swears that’s not the case. I love this job. And you’re right about the traumas and dramas, but the romance part, my heart is occupied elsewhere. [indistinct announcement over P.A.] Has the firm ever dealt with litigation like this before? No one except another Hamilton would have the stones to bring a suit like this. You don’t seem worried. Well, Naomi saw a shot and she took it. That’s what I would do. I know Mike likes to talk a big, gross game… but do you think he’s guilty of harassing those women? Either way, I can handle Mike. He could be a wild card, Bill. If it comes to that, I don’t see Mike being a good boy in court. Like I said, he’ll be handled, and so will my daughter. Any way I can help you? Yeah, look, keep your eyes and ears open, okay? Make sure this thing doesn’t escalate. All right? And, hey, I trust you, Tomas, okay? I won’t let you down, jefe. Whatever you need to protect the firm, I’m here for it. Okay. No Caroline. I’m sure she’s not far. Let’s just wait. Welcome back, ladies. It’s good to see you. Mr. Hamilton. I guess we’re early. Oh, no, not at all, Becky. And please call me Bill, okay? We’ve all known each other for too long to let a little misunderstanding come between us, right? I think we can get this all straightened out in no time. Shall we? Um, but Naomi is not… I’m sure she’s on her way up. The demure act is getting old. What am I responsible for now? Climate change, lack of world peace? You in here last night. You found my camera and erased the footage. You put a camera in your mother’s office to spy on me? Because a little rat keeps sneaking into Mom’s confidential files. [scoffs] When I figure out why, I’ll expose you for the phony you are. Who are you, Eva Thomas? Really? Who I am is someone who is so over you and all your delulu accusations. You don’t stop. You just keep coming. So you know what? Whatever you’re gonna do, Kat… …bring it. Your mom’s here. Probably visiting Aunt Nicole. How does she seem? She’s good. Uh, she’s a little disappointed that the hospital isn’t a hotbed of romance. You and Derek are falling down on the job. Get your firefighter to come over here in full gear so you two can play “rescue.” That would be hot. But he’s pulling a double. Oh, you miss your man. Mmm. Like crazy. But there is another man who just brought the awkward to my day. Andre has not spoken two syllables to me at my desk. Poor guy. He’s probably not used to anybody turning him down. He knows that I’m blissfully happy with Derek. I just– I thought we were past this. I shouldn’t have to lose my friend because he had a what-if moment. Okay, so, ladies, you need to understand what it means to bring a case against my firm. We’ve all worked for your firm, Bill. We know what that means. We’ve been well briefed by your daughter. And we shouldn’t be speaking to you without our lawyer present. Where is Naomi? I’m sure she’ll be here any moment. Listen, in the meantime, we don’t need to stand on ceremony, right? Let’s just take a breath and talk this out. You think this can be mitigated with a few cleansing breaths? Look, we had a great history of working well together until we didn’t, Carrie. You worked your way up from the mail room to the library. And, Stefania, you had an entire firm of supporters when you were pursuing your paralegal certificate. And, Becky, we made sure that you had paid family leave when you were tending to your sick mother. How is she, by the way?
Fine.
Oh, good to hear it. What’s the point of this? Well, I’m just reminding you all that you were part of my family when you were here. I invited you to my wedding. Yeah, nothing says family like a mass firing. I’m still concerned about your well-being. So I want to give you guys a little preview of how things will work out in court. Let’s start with you, Carrie. Do you recall exchanging several emails with your friend about a Dr. Zwieg and his nasty divorce? Yeah, my friend works in his office. So? Yeah, he’s a client. So that’s a violation of confidentiality. A client? I-I didn’t know that. I never saw any files on him or-or anything. Hold up. How do you even know about Carrie’s personal emails? Oh, I’m privy to any and all information transmitted from the work server. You didn’t set up this meeting to negotiate or clarify anything. You called us here to threaten us. Well, even if he didn’t catch feelings for you, Ash, his ego is probably hella bruised. Double sigh. I’m just glad Derek and Jacob are perfect and that we’re not out there searching anymore. [phone chimes] Damn. I got to go. Bye. Bye. MAN [over P.A.]: Nurse Hugo to ICU. Andre, you’re talking to me, but your mind’s elsewhere. Distracted? Well, yeah. You have no idea what it’s like to be here with you but not being able to be with you. Do you know how you look? Good answer.
Nicole: Hey, guys.
Hey.
Sissy, sorry I’m late.
DANI: No worries.
We can talk in my office.
All right. [clears throat] So glad you’re still here, Dre.
Yeah.
I keep half expecting you to sneak out of town on one of your jaunts. Yeah, well, this town keeps giving me reasons to stay. Well, maybe I’ll give you another. Maybe you’ll never leave. Okay. Why have you summoned me? Can’t I just want to see my sis? Place means something. If this were just a regular check-in, we would be having salads at the club. Are you acting on your own, or have our parents sanctioned this meeting? Mother and Daddy have nothing to do with me wanting to lay eyes on you. Well, after the last few weeks, it’s fair. Fair but unwarranted. As I have told them, Ashley, and the mailman, I’m not thinking about Bill and Hayley. I have found other ways to occupy myself. Like what? Can you not say that like I am a bomb ready to detonate? I am never gonna stop taking your temperature, Dani. Then you will be glad to hear that I am fully all in on my next move. Which is…? Taking all that bad juju and channeling it into something good. I’m going to help Chelsea make her line the hottest thing since Dior. That video was proof. Of what? That I’m some grifter hacker mastermind who took a temporary job with your mom to do what exactly? Uh, I don’t need to know your endgame to know what I saw. And I don’t have to have that footage to bury you. Why are you so sure everyone will believe you over me when you keep coming at me for no apparent reason? [sighs] You have absolutely everything. I had nothing until I lucked into this one shot to maybe figure out how to make my life better. But the way you keep making me your target, Kat, it’s a waste of your time and a bad look. So why don’t you just leave me alone? Marketing a model and marketing a purse aren’t all that different. I’ve already mocked up a couple ads. Have you and Chelsea talked about what your role is gonna be in her new company? I have been running my child’s career since she stepped on the runway. Just because she has stepped off doesn’t mean that I can’t help her get to where she wants to go. No one is questioning your usefulness. I remember sitting on your bed while you were crying your eyes out about how much you wanted to model in New York. You were so brave and so ready, Dani. Maybe Chelsea’s ready, too. To get away from me, you mean? It’s not the same thing. Mother was lecturing me about “the dangers.” Daddy couldn’t begin to understand the fashion world. It’s like I was asking to run off and become a dinosaur.
[laughs]
Chelsea isn’t escaping me and the Dupree world. She’s building on what I already did in fashion. I’m not just her mom here, I’m an icon. I-I’m a damn stepping stone. And what if she doesn’t want a leg up, wants to do it on her own? I appreciate the check-in, sis, but everyone’s getting what they want here. Chelsea is getting off the runway, and the Dupree clan is getting me to finally move on from Bill. [knocking at door] Come in.
Well?
What’s going on? I told Uncle Ted that this town keeps giving me reasons to stay.
You said yes?
You said yes to what? Well, I’ve always wanted to get into documentaries. And, uh, the hospital said they wanted to highlight their new class of nurses as the heroes they are, so… The board flipped over his video that he did for Nicole’s award ceremony.
They want him to direct and produce.
Yeah.
I’m just sorry we can’t pay you your usual rates.
That’s cool. Sometimes the universe gives you an offer that you just can’t refuse. I get that. It’s like the tectonic plates are shifting underneath you, and things crop up that you never thought of before. I guess I’ll be seeing you around. I’ve got to tell the board the good news.
Yeah.
Okay. Now, why don’t you tell me the real reason you said yes? [chuckles softly] You think you can humiliate us, when it’s Mike Davis who should be embarrassed? It’s his shame, not ours. And his continued harassment happened under your roof… …in a permissive environment that you created. And all that talk about family. I don’t hear you offering us our jobs back. Ah, well, I can’t hire you back while you’re suing me. We have nothing left to lose. Oh, don’t you? Hmm. Well, there’s no overhead for me while I’m defending my firm’s squeaky-clean reputation. But it’ll certainly cost you, though. We’ve got a contingency deal with Naomi. Yes, yeah, I know. No out-of-pocket if you win. But if you lose, who do you think gets stuck with all those filing fees, deposition costs, investigative costs, and the rest? And your harassment charge throws your bedroom doors wide open to the press. And since I have all the tabloids on speed dial, you stand to lose your reputations, chances of future employment. We’ve heard enough. Hold on, Stefania. What are you offering? Becky, you can’t. We can agree to what’s fair for all parties involved.
You’re saying you’ll settle?
That’s what I’m saying. Stop talking, Counselor, now. You know, it’s incredibly personal touring other people’s homes. You’re literally walking through their lives. Now… did anything we saw today suit you? Oh, I could live in any one of those places. My mother is… She’s a bit particular. [both laugh] Well, a home is one’s most intimate purchase. The right one can change your life. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone talk about houses like that. Tell me, Joey, what says home? Hmm. Smells. I love to cook, so something sizzling on the stove. Fresh coat of paint. Fireplace burning. A woman’s perfume. Aren’t you the poet? Well, I meant, what’s your mother’s idea of home? Ah. Well, um, my mother. My mother spent her life making things calm for me amid chaos. All I want for her is to want for nothing. She’ll have a house fit for a queen. That’s about to come on the market. Spa bath with built-in guardrails, and the coup de grâce– it has a massage room, so you can have a masseuse come in and soothe her aching muscles. You really are a hustler, aren’t you?
Is that a bad thing?
Just the opposite. You make things happen… as if by magic. It’s improper and potentially illegal for you to be speaking to my clients without my presence. Your clients were always free to leave. You’re late, Naomi. I was given the wrong time. Are you accusing me of deliberately misleading you? You’ve done worse. I need to know exactly what you shared with him. He did most of the talking. Never speak to him when I’m not with you. Bill Hamilton is not your friend, your boss, or your family. He is the one that made your pain possible. Allegedly. Remember, I always taught you that specificity is essential. Your little mock trial borders on witness intimidation. Pull something like this again, and I will pursue contempt charges against you. Come on, Naomi. You’re making a mountain out of a simple mistake in scheduling. And you’re wasting time that could be spent reflecting on the potential liabilities your firm incurred when you fired these women instead of their perpetrator.
Naomi…
Ladies, this meeting is over. [clears throat] You know, Dad, it probably would have taken me weeks to convince my clients how worried you are that we’ll win. You accomplished that in one meeting. Thanks. Do you like anything you see? I do. WOMAN [over P.A.]: We need a nurse to Trauma…
Sorry we got interrupted.
Oh, it’s no problem. I know your patients come first. That’s part of the reason why you are one of the best psychiatrists in the entire world. Ah, having you around is good for my ego. Even if it is all lies. Just the slightest exaggeration.
And I know Ted loves having you back, too.
Yeah. We both figured part of your wanderlust was avoiding this place. Yeah, well, there are a lot of memories connected to losing my parents, but… And now you have chosen to stay a while. And we’re back to that.
I saw what you did there, I did.
Mm-hmm. [laughs] Where does everything stand with Ashley? I stand as far away as possible since making that crazy move and trying to kiss her. And this documentary? Puts me right back into her orbit. Bad move, huh? Was shutting Ashley out completely and torpedoing your friendship a good move? Hey, that’s my standard move. You’re either all in or all out. Ashley’s not the one for you. Yeah, you’ve made that clear. And so has she. But maybe she’s a sign that you’re ready to open up your heart again. I don’t know about that. Think about it. Qué guapa. I’m a mess. Thank you for texting. I needed to just turn off with you.
Glad I could help.
[laughs] Actually, I have a favor to ask. Okay, what is it? You and your cousin are tight. Maybe you could convince her to drop this case against the firm. Yep. And don’t worry. I’m gonna put you on when I blow up. [laughs] Okay. Hey. I never thought I’d be starring in a reality show. It’s like look out, Housewives. Are you talking about Andre’s documentary? The man himself got my interview scheduled in a couple days. But you’re not a new nurse. I’m the nursing supervisor. Who better to talk about your progress? Speaking of, you ready for your close-up? Maybe I won’t have one. Will Andre be interviewing all the new nurses? He is, as far as I know. Whew. I’m a little nervous, and I never get nervous. But I will be representing the hospital. And I got to make sure I’m running up the buzz on our program. We need more eager, talented nurses like you. You’re Shanice. You’re always telling the world what’s what. The only difference is Andre’s camera will be there to capture it. I need new scrubs. Uh-huh. Hey there. Did Andre schedule your interview yet? Not yet. There’s no reason that you won’t have a special place in this thing. Delivering a baby during your first week… I don’t even know if Andre wants me in this thing. Why wouldn’t he? You’re gonna be a special part of this. [Ashley chuckles]
See ya, Ashley.
Thanks. [sighs] So, you want me to talk Naomi out of the sexual harassment case against her dad’s firm? It’s a hostile work environment case. The sexual harassment case is against a specific partner. I don’t care what happens to him. I care about the firm itself. There are so many shades of wrong here, Tomas. I was so excited to see you. I-I thought we were getting somewhere.
We are.
But you came here with an agenda that has nothing to do with me. I thought we’d understand each other. We’re the same. Crazy ambitious, eyes on the prize. I would never try to use you to manipulate your family. How is it using you? I-I asked. If the answer is no, t-then so be it. But when everything I’ve worked for is on the line, when a case like this could kill the firm and my career, I had to at least ask. If it’s so important to you to get that pitch to Naomi, there she is, have at it. Kat, please.
Hey, cuz.
Hi. Good luck with your case. The other side seems… weak. So… how did you rise to the top of the cutthroat DMV real estate market? I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. We had so much, and not much was expected of me. Then I met Doug, and the twins came quickly afterward. But as they got older and I drove them all over Maryland and D.C. for activities and playdates, I found myself drawn to the homes, the architecture and design. You’re sorry you asked. No, just the opposite. I’m fascinated.
[door closes]
I know I’m late. [sighs] I hate everyone in the world except for you. Well, you might hate me, too. After talking to the manufacturer, I think I agreed to the wrong price point. I’ll call her back. I had another run-in with Evil Eva. You don’t even want to know. Honestly, I really don’t. And then Hot Tomas wanted to meet up, and I thought this day was salvaged, but all he wanted was for me to ask your sister to drop the harassment case against your dad’s firm.
Oh, ick.
I mean, one of the things I really liked about him was that he was all about his business, too. But to ask me to twist Naomi’s arm for that case? I swear, it’s like my dad is like a virus. Not to make an excuse for Hot Tomas, but double ick. There’s like six degrees of Bill Hamilton and every bad thing that happens in this town. Triple ick. The third one from the left reminds me of the stuff I used to give you when you were sick.
Hi, Aunt Dani.
I’m sorry, Mom. We only met here because it was convenient. But if we’re in your way… Not at all. This is actually perfect. I have so many thoughts, and we have so little time. Mom… Uh, remember how Jane Birkin was flying from Paris to London? Her straw bag spilled, she has a conversation with the Hermès CEO and the Birkin bag was born? Well, yeah, but I don’t… Call me Jane. I might not have your talent, Chelsea, but designers can have “momagers,” too. Now hear me out. You unretire.
No.
For one night only. Go on, Aunt Dani.
Kat.
Oh. And on this one very well promoted night, you premiere the first bag of the Chelsea Dupree collection at the close of the fashion show. Just you and the bag. It’s the showstopper. Even if I wasn’t quitting, I’m not ending my career naked. That’s just details. Body paint, gold leaf, feathers. You know what? I forgot my tablet in the car. I’ll be right back.
I thought you talked to her.
I did, but it didn’t stick. And you were encouraging her. It was a good idea. I’m done modeling. Okay. Okay. But why not walk down the runway one last time– with your clothes on. Your swan song can also be our new beginning.
[sighs]
Just think about it. Okay. I remember when we were little, we borrowed these. I thought you would kill us. But you just said… Fashion is the only art not just to be shown, but enjoyed. You want me to walk down the runway wearing nothing but purses? Now, how would your premiere bag stand out if we did that? No, these are just inspiration. What you send down the runway first matters. So, what’ll it be? A baguette, double-quilted flap, loop, crossbody? What do you think, Kat? I think you and Aunt Dani have it covered. I am going to meet my dad. Go. Be free.
Bye, honey.
Bye. All right, you could choose a tote. Gosh, the options are endless. A clutch, hobo bag, wristlet, shoulder bag, belt bag, frame bag. [fading]: A satchel, evening bag, duffel bag. I mean, a fanny pack. Really, a cute backpack would even be… How about, like, a classic suitcase? Briefcase! A suitcase, no– Now I have ten agents and a support staff of seven. Not bad for the girl who just needed something to do. Vanessa. Joey. Sorry to interrupt. Hi, Randy. I’m helping your boss find the perfect house for his mother. Well, no one loves his mom more than Joey. Hopefully one day I’ll get to meet her. Well, I know she’s going to love you. I’m sorry to have to leave, but Randy and I have business. I enjoyed our time together today. I’ll remember everything you told me about your mother’s wants and text you more listings. I know we’ll find the perfect place, for my mother. Naomi, can we… You know I can’t talk to you about the case. This is personal.
Excuse us.
Sure.
Mike’s an ass.
Tomas. I want to discuss myself and everyone else at the firm. Most people in that office had no idea of the alleged happenings. Are you prepared to ruin them, too? My father made the same argument, but I’m sorry. You and the others are not my concern.
My clients are my…
Are you really prepared to bring down Bill’s whole firm, not just the alleged perpetrator? You think you know me because you’ve heard my father talk about his sweet and brainy Naomi? Well, here’s who I am. I can be just as ruthless and relentless as my father, in service to my clients. I won’t just win this case. I will pulverize Bill Hamilton in court. And if you don’t want to be ruined, Tomas, I’d get moving on my exit plan before your boss and his firm go up in flames. [sighs] Sorry, Dad. It’s been one of those days. I was already out of the car before I remembered I was supposed to meet you at the hospital. Nothing big. Just got into an annoying argument with someone. See you soon? If I was here, what would you say to me? I… would wait for you to do the talking, since it was really unfair of you to put me in between you and Naomi. You’re right. And I’m truly sorry. Wow, I… I think you might be the first guy that’s ever said that to me. It’s the truth. I got caught up in thinking how this lawsuit could tank my career. That’s understandable. Yeah, but putting it on you to make it go away? That was a bad call. No excuses. You are so intense. Like how I get when I talk about Eva. Ugh. No wonder everyone wants me to shut up about her. But you always listen, even when you disagree. I sound like a pretty good guy. Think you can forgive me? What’s in it for me if I do? Sexy late-night phone calls. Long walks. The way you feel… …and smell so good. Kat. And the way you look at me, like you want to… I want to kiss you. Stop talking. Wait, Tomas, I– I want more. Then type yes. [scoffs] All right. I saw almost everyone this shift, so… Almost everyone? I can lend you Eva if you need some extra hands. Ah, you just missed your best friend. Don’t, Ted. No, Dad is right. I’m tired of being all about Eva. I don’t want to waste another minute on trifling people. I am done with Eva Thomas. Oh, I hope that’s true. If this really is a ceasefire, then maybe I will pull Eva in. I’m glad we’ll get some much needed peace around here. Hey, do you have a minute? Um, I don’t. I have a… Please. We’ll see you later. Come on. Hey, what’s up? [whispers]: Come on. What’s up? I want to know why my friend can’t look me in the eye. Why are you avoiding me, Andre? Was that Joey Armstrong in here earlier? Oh, yeah. The FBI’s been interested in him for years, but he’s still free to eat Orphey Gene’s biscuits like the rest of us. If the Bureau can’t make a case against somebody who everybody pretty much knows is up to no good, how are we supposed to take down your father, one of the most respected men in this town? You have me. Okay? I know my dad’s vulnerabilities. Did Tomas have any more news on the case? No. Not at all. Uh, let’s review what Bill said to you so that we know he has nothing to use against us. And then we can begin planning our next move. There are no next moves. We can’t beat him. It’s time to settle. Yeah, I’ll have it resolved by the end of the week. Okay. Talk soon. You look so calm. And the sword of Damocles is hanging over you. Ah, no, think of it more as a fountain pen. Now Naomi’s got chops, but she’s not cutting her teeth on my firm. If you put Naomi and the women up against Mike Davis? Mike looks like the guy who hangs outside the club. The kind that lets the air out of girl’s tires and then offers them a ride home. Yeah, well, I can use the press to paint any picture I want. In the end, Mike will come off as a harmless jerk. And Naomi? Well, she’ll be seen as having a vicious personal vendetta against me, negating any sympathy for the women she’s representing. And when we’re through all of this, the second that Mike so much as smiles at a paralegal, he’s out. I’m not gonna allow him to make us vulnerable again. Naomi seems… formidable. Mm. Yeah. Yeah, I can see that Naomi is a contender. But my reputation for being untouchable, that’s earned. Nobody’s gonna change that. Not even my daughter. You know, Chels, I didn’t think we would make this move until much later in your career, but with a few tweaks, you really have something here. We’re solid on the design I’ve been pouring myself into for, like, ever. And it shows, baby. But it’s never too late for a little inspiration. You know, one of the ways that being a model and being a mogul differ? You have to be able to say what you want. What I want is for my mother to back off. This is my thing, Mom. Get your own.
