[ Footsteps approaching ]

Nick: [ Sighs ] Phyllis is gone. She’s really gone.

Christine: Let’s head back to the [Indistinct].

Chance: Okay.

Nikki: There was so much pain in nicholas’s voice when he called with the news last night.

Victor: Well, phyllis’s death will affect anyone, you know, friend or foe. She was one… one of a kind.

Phyllis: This is awful.

Jeremy: Yeah, well, it’s not crimson lights, but you better get used to that cause you’re never going back there again.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m never going back there again.

Jeremy: And you’re dead, remember? Imagine everyone in genoa city waking up to a world without phyllis summers in it. There’s no turning back now ’cause our plan is coming together like clockwork. It’s moving perfectly. It’s good for you. You’re getting everything you ever wanted.

Kyle: Dad, um, morning. How are you?

Jack: I honestly don’t know how to answer that question. I feel like I’m in a nightmare and I can’t seem to wake up.

Kyle: Yeah, despite everything, I know how much you cared for phyllis.

Jack: The fact that we haven’t been on good terms for some time doesn’t make the loss any less profound.

Kyle: Yeah, the house is awfully quiet. Where is everyone?

Jack: Ashley and traci got out early. I encouraged diane to get over to the grand phoenix spa, just to shake off some of that stress and to not upset summer.

Kyle: Yeah, good thinking. You know, dad. I– I feel so helpless. She barely slept. I don’t know what to do for her.

Jack: I think she needs to know that you’re there for her.

Kyle: I know, but summer’s always so full of life and joy and that’s gone.

Jack: This is gonna take some patience. This isn’t gonna happen quickly.

Kyle: I know.

Jack: She’s got a lot to work through.

Kyle: Yeah, problem is, she’s overwhelmed, but not just with phyllis’s death, she is consumed with the idea that mom had something to do with phyllis collapsing. Dad, I need to know. What do you really think about stark’s accusations?

Jack: They’re ludicrous. There’s no way diane did that.

Kyle: Dad, I feel the same way. But do you think in the past she could have done something like this?

Jack: What does it matter whoever she was in the past? She is a completely different person today.

Kyle: You’re right. But not everyone is going to see it that way. Especially after the fight those two had. Everyone knows how much they hated each other. Look, I’m just afraid this doesn’t look good for mom, and who knows where that will lead the police.

Jack: Let’s just hope it leads them straight to stark.

[ Knocking on door ]

Phyllis: Who is that? No one’s supposed to know we’re here. What the hell’s going on?

-During an asthma attack,

Jeremy: Anyone follow you?

Carson: No.

Jeremy: You sure?

Carson: I’m positive. I’m not on anybody’s radar.

Jeremy: Get in here. Hurry up.

Phyllis: Wait, wait, what are you doing? No one’s supposed to know where we are. Why did you let him know where to find us?

Jeremy: Calm down. Carson and I have some unfinished business that we need to take care of. It’s all there, okay? If you think this was for you, you were mistaken. This is his last payment for services rendered.

Phyllis: Okay, well, before you give him that– hey, hey, look at me in the eyes. Did the police buy the story? I mean, all of it? Did they buy it? Also, did chance? Did he take note when I was whispering in the ambulance, when I was whispering, “poison?”

Carson: I stuck to the script exactly. The poison, the crash, the whole thing. They totally bought I was the lone survivor. I even made sure your blood sample was found by the rescue team.

Jeremy: Good, good. I knew I could count on you.

Carson: Everybody keeps calling me, asking me if I’m doing okay. I just want this to be done and over with now.

Jeremy: Okay, all right. Take the money, forget you ever met us. And if the cops question you again, you keep playing your part, okay? You stick to the story, keep it simple, or else we’re gonna have a problem. Got it?

Carson: Yeah, I got it.

Jeremy: Okay, now get outta here.

[ Door slamming ]

Phyllis: He’s so skittish.

[ Sighs ] Are you sure that guy can be trusted?

Christine: Unfortunately, it’s impossible to get a viable autopsy on phyllis’s remains. The medical examiner said the damage done by the fire was just too extensive.

Chance: But the lab is processing a sample from the wreckage. Her blood that was drawn before the crash, so they can at least run a tox screen on that.

Christine: Mm-hmm. Court order’s been issued. The sample’s being tested. I’m telling you, if there was a substance in her system before she passed out…

Chance: Then the emt’s statement of her last words being about poison is validated.

Christine: And if that’s true, we will have a whole other mystery to unravel. Who was behind the poisoning? Diane? Stark? Someone we haven’t even considered?

Chance: Why would stark poison his new wife?

Christine: Uh, well, maybe he married her for her money. Maybe he was looking for some fast score before leaving town. I don’t know, the guy’s a wild card, and this quickie wedding to phyllis has caught everyone off guard.

Michael: Hello. I’d say good morning, but I’M… not.

Chance: I have a feeling that you two need to speak alone. I’ll let you know when the test results are in.

Christine: Okay. Hey, I know how hard this must be for you and lauren. Phyllis’s death, I– I’m so sorry. I– I know how close you were.

Michael: There aren’t enough words to describe how we’re feeling. And I’m sure lauren and I aren’t the only ones.

[ Object crinkling ]

Jack: Summer. Hey. I’m glad you’re up. Can I get you anything? How about some breakfast? I’m sure you’re pretty hungry.

Summer: Uh, not really. Where’s harrison?

Kyle: Linda thought it’d be a good idea to get him out of the house for a while.

Jack: And we agreed.

Summer: Okay. Were you afraid that I was gonna go off on diane again?

Jack: No.

Kyle: No. No, we just didn’t want him picking up on all the grief in the house today.

Summer: Then he should come home, because I’m done with all of that.

Jack: We’re done with all of what?

Summer: Grief, being sad.

Jack: Oh, summer, if only it were that easy for any of us. No, saying it is over does not make it so.

Summer: Okay, well, I’m done talking about diane or jeremy stark or anything that happened yesterday.

Jack: I totally understand that. You don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to deal with right now.

Kyle: Hey, it’s a beautiful day out. Why don’t we go out back and get some sun?

Summer: I can’t right now. I have work to do.

Jack: Oh, honey, marchetti can wait at a time like this.

Kyle: We’ve notified the staff. We’ll be taking some time off.

Summer: Thanks, but it’s not marchetti. It’s something far more important and it can’t wait. Having diabetes can raise a lot of questions.

Phyllis: Hey, that carson, he’s a lucky guy. He gets to keep his identity and he gets some money.

[ Sighs ] Can you talk to me about the ambulance driver? Why was he okay to lose his identity? I mean, supposedly he died in the crash with me. Why was he okay with that?

Jeremy: Oh, he had no attachments, so worked out just fine for him. He can start over. He’s probably halfway to a tropical beach by now.

Phyllis: Okay, and then those two bodies from the morgue, mr. And mrs. John doe, that were found at the crash site? I mean, that’s– that’s me and the driver, right?

Jeremy: Hmm. Poetic, isn’t it? The same blueprint that diane used with her exit all those years ago. Only this time she’ll be a murder suspect and spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Phyllis: And I’ll be wiped out of existence.

Jeremy: What?

Phyllis: What?

Jeremy: I hope that’s not regret I’m hearing?

Kyle: Summer, what work could you possibly have to do that’s more important than everything else going on right now?

Summer: I have to start planning my mom’s memorial service.

Jack: That’s not something you have to take on right now, is it?

Kyle: Yeah, you need to rest. We hate to see you pushing yourself like this.

Summer: I’m not pushing myself. I’m just doing what needs to be done. My mom deserves a proper tribute and I’m gonna be the one that arranges it.

Sally: I’m really glad we just stayed here for the night. I imagine you have to go be with summer. Have you heard from her?

Nick: [ Clicks tongue ] I’ve tried calling her, um, several times but she…

[ Sighs ] She needs space. It’s getting hard to stay away from her.

Sally: I mean, she has to be devastated. If she should spend the next few weeks in bed, no one would blame her.

Nick: Yeah. I told noah and faith. Noah and allie are on a trip. Uh, they’re gonna cut that short and head home. I told faith she should call summer, but… she’s got to stay at school. She’s prepping for finals.

Sally: And christian?

Nick: I haven’t had the heart to tell him yet. He adored phyllis. It also just happens to be one of those random days off from school. So, the nanny was gonna take him to the zoo, get him some ice cream, make a special day out of it. I didn’t want to take that away from him by telling him about this.

Sally: You’re amazing, you know that?

Nick: Not feeling really amazing right now.

Sally: [ Sighs ] But you are. I mean, look at how you’re taking care of your kids in the middle of a tragedy. I really admire that about you. But you need someone to lean on, too. I hope you know you can count on me. All you have to do is ask.

Nick: Thanks. I just can’t stop thinking about phyllis and why this happened. How big a part of my life she is. I’m really gonna miss her.

Christine: So, how’s lauren doing? I know that she and phyllis have been through hell and back. And to lose someone who you’ve seen through the best of times and the worst of times, it’s devastating.

Michael: Lauren is shaken to her core. This morning she told me that she could literally feel her heart breaking. Phyllis was one of the best friends she’s ever had. And it’s just unreal to think that she’s just gone like that.

Christine: Yeah, that’s the hard part.

Michael: Well, god knows this town won’t be the same without phyllis running around raising hell.

Christine: I mean… I’ll admit there have been many times that I wished phyllis would leave this town for good.

Michael: Not like this. No one should wish something like this on anyone.

Christine: The way she was ripped out of everyone’s lives, it’s jarring, to say the least, but I promise you this– I will get to the bottom of what happened and make sure justice is served.

Michael: Which is why I wanted to speak to you, madam district attorney.

Christine: Michael, you know I can’t discuss an ongoing investigation.

Michael: I totally understand. I’m not here seeking information. I’m here to share some.

Michael: At the gala, I turned off my phone. I promised lauren a romantic night with no distractions. And we were having a glorious time until it all went to hell.

Christine: I seem to remember you and lauren leaving right after everyone was told phyllis didn’t make it.

Michael: Oh… we went home in a complete daze, just trying to process what happened. It wasn’t until the middle of the night that I remembered to turn my phone back on. And I was… stunned by what I’d missed.

Christine: What was it?

Michael: A call from phyllis that she made last night. She left a voice mail. And you need to hear it.

Phyllis: I don’t have regrets, exactly. Um–

Jeremy: Okay, well, what do you have, then?

Phyllis: I am just concerned about my kids. That’s all.

Jeremy: Okay, you knew from the beginning how hard it was gonna be on them.

Phyllis: Yes, I knew, it’s just this one thing. Um, when I started in on my speech after jack and diane’s announcement, um, I looked over at them and they seemed agitated, and so I just carried on, and– and, um, when I started stumbling, they seemed a little alarmed, that’s all. And I could see it in their eyes that they were worried. And then when I fell to the floor, they– they seemed really frightened and I… I just wasn’t expecting that. How did they react when they found out that the ambulance didn’t make it to the hospital?

Jeremy: They were surprised and upset, as to be expected.

Phyllis: Okay. How did they react when they found out that I–

Jeremy: Phyllis! What does it matter?

Phyllis: Well, it just matters to me because I’m not used to walking away from my kids. That’s all. I’m not diane.

Jeremy: Look, I can understand why you’re having second thoughts, but need I remind you how furious you were? Remember? How you felt utterly disillusioned and betrayed? Now, that’s one of the main reasons why you agreed to take it this far.

Phyllis: Yeah, I know.

Jeremy: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your kids made you the enemy, huh? Remember that? They chose her side. They pushed you away. They’re not kids anymore. They have families of their own and they’ll find a way to move on without you. Okay? ‘Cause that’s what people do. I know that’s hard to hear, but that’s the way it is. They grieve, they heal. And ultimately, they move on. Which is precisely what you need to do.

[ Phyllis sighing]

Nikki: Hi, sweetheart, how are you doing?

Summer: I’m good, how are you? Thank you, guys, for coming. You really didn’t have to. I– I’m fine. I’m not gonna waste another second falling apart. It’s not the newman way. Right, grandpa?

Victor: There’s no wrong way. No right way. No newman way. Don’t you stay strong just because of us, okay?

Summer: I’m not. Believe me, I– I’m seriously– I’m fine. I just need to stay focused.

Victor: Focused on what?

Kyle: On phyllis’s memorial. Summer started putting some thoughts together before you got here.

Nikki: Already.

Summer: Why would I wait? It needs to be perfect. Something… that my mom would be proud of. Elegant and… stylish, just like her. Nikki: Well, that sounds lovely. I just want you to know that you can count on us for anything you might need. And if you already have some ideas about the memorial, maybe we can take it off your hands for a little bit so you can rest.

Summer: Please… don’t coddle me. It’s not what I need right now and I’m not a child. So just don’t treat me like one.

Victor: Okay. Sweetheart, come here. Come here.

I have type 2 diabetes,

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Are you tired

of washing dishes?

Nick: I mean, it still doesn’t seem real. It’s definitely not right. Phyllis was the embodiment of life, that fire, that passion, was always there. It was never phoned in. She lived life to the fullest at all times. Even though there were some times when I wish she didn’T.

Sally: Yeah, she definitely knew how to command a room, that’s for sure.

Nick: I think that electricity, that… spark around her is what drew me to her. I was at the lowest point in my life when she and I got together, sharon and i had just lost cassie. It was, um… I want you to know that I don’T… I feel terrible, the way I betrayed sharon and I’m not trying to make excuses for my behavior, but at that time… I was in trouble. I was drowning and phyllis was a lifeline for me.

Sharon: After cassie died, I didn’t think that anything could hurt me more deeply. And then… I learned about nick and phyllis’s affair and that poured salt in an already opened wound. That was the beginning of nick and phyllis’s relationship and it was the beginning of my rivalry with her.

Chance: It must have been a long time ago.

Sharon: Yeah, it was pretty ugly. The jealousy, the cat fights the psychological warfare. Of course, I can’t blame it all on her. There were times I… gave as good as I got and probably sometimes when I went a little further than that. Look… whether you hated phyllis or you loved her, she had a talent for sparking very strong emotions and she made sure that she was a presence that could not be ignored.

Nick: It was all extremes, all the time with phyllis, on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes that was the best thing about her. Sometimes it was the worst. Uh, she was… unpredictable and exciting, stubborn and infuriating, especially when she got some idea in her head and, look out, there was no stopping her. Especially if it was something that she shouldn’t be pursuing, it didn’t matter. Yeah, she drove me nuts sometimes.

Sally: Nuts in a good way, looks like. What happened between the two of you?

Nick: I guess in the… long run we weren’t meant to be together. But we always stayed close, you know? It was mostly because of summer but also… underneath that fierce, maddening exterior was someone with a really big heart.

Sharon: Ultimately, phyllis and i found a way to get along. We were both part of the same extended family, so it was important that we… learned to be civil. And then… when I was undergoing cancer treatment, out of the blue… phyllis showed me genuine kindness and that was the last thing that I expected. But that was phyllis. She was… always full of surprises.

Chance: Yeah, it sounds like she was two different women. You never knew which one you were gonna run into, huh?

Sharon: Exactly. One of them was… vicious and scheming and the other one, she was capable of love and compassion. Now they’re both gone.

Nick: You know, our romantic relationship, it ended a long time ago, but we have this bond that is unbreakable. She loved her kids with every fiber of her being. They love her just as much. It scares the hell out of me, thinking about how summer’s gonna… find a way to get through this.

Nikki: Darling…

Jack: Uh, please stay, have a seat.

Nikki: I– I didn’t mean to imply that you couldn’t handle the memorial on your own. I just want to help. We all do. Please don’t misinterpret that.

Summer: I’m sorry for snapping at you like that, grandma. I know that you mean well, but the thing is, is I– I– I can’T… hand off any part of this. I need to make sure every detail of this memorial is exactly the way that my mom would have wanted it.

Victor: Sweetheart, everything is all right. Okay? We understand.

Summer: My mom… left this world feeling abandoned and alone and I’m– I’m not gonna abandon her now. I don’t care what else is going on, the investigation, the speculation, all the accusations, it’s not gonna get in the way of me showing the world how loved she really was. So, if you guys will excuse me.

Kyle: Hey, hey, summer, summer. We all respect where you’re coming from. Handle the memorial however you see fit. But let those of us who love you be there for you.

Summer: Okay. (Lucky) uh-oh the magic’s disappearing!

Jeremy: Now whatever doubts you have, you need to get them out of your head now. We did this thing. We have to live with it. Now… it’s time for us to go our separate ways. It’s been real and I’ll always look back fondly on our brief marriage.

Phyllis: Well, you should considering you benefited.

Jeremy: Yeah, it was generous of you to change your will, you know, half of it goes to your kids and the other half goes to your new loving husband. But it’s not like you’re walking away empty-handed, right?

Phyllis: You certainly made out like a bandit, didn’t you?

Phyllis: You have a passport with a brand new identity, a new phone and quite a hefty amount of cash. You could start over. You can go anywhere, do anything to your heart’s desire. Now, who could have a problem with that? Hell, you should be rejoicing right now. Now, have you decided where you’re gonna reinvent yourself?

Phyllis: I didn’t get that far. I didn’t think much about the future. I was just focused on our plan, you know? I didn’t want to make any future plans just in case some part of… our scheme went wrong.

Jeremy: Yeah, well, it didn’T. Now the world is your playground. You can do anything. The possibilities are endless. You’re still young, beautiful, bright, and you are shrewd enough to build a whole new future for yourself. Now, you have the life you deserve… and diane… gets the life she deserves behind bars.

Michael: I need to warn you, this is gonna be hard to listen to and not just because the last thing I expected was to hear phyllis’s voice, but… you’ll see for yourself.

Phyllis: Michael… it’s phyllis. I’m– I’m calling you, I just, I– you need to know diane is out of control. I am actually terrified. She tricked jack into proposing to her and she’s gonna get rid of anybody or anything that stands in her way. I– I know you probably think I’m being overly dramatic. Please listen to me. This is serious. That woman just attacked me and threatened to kill me. God help me, michael, I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’m actually afraid of that crazy bitch.

Christine: Wow.

[ Chuckling ]

Michael: Was something funny?

Christine: After all of the years… of fighting with phyllis, I mean, the decades… of animosity and hatred… and it went both ways, it wasn’t just her hating me. I loathed that woman. I couldn’t stand the sight of her. I wouldn’t go so low as to try and run her over with a car, but… the thought crossed my mind, and… and now she is gone, under mysterious circumstances. And, you know… the one person who is in charge of trying to figure out what happened, the one person who is supposed to bring justice to phyllis… is me. Her worst enemy.

[ Chuckling ] Oh, so what, now you find something funny?

[ Laughing ]

Michael: It’s almost as if phyllis planned this.

[ Chuckling ]

Christine: Oh, god.

Jack: Summer was an absolute wreck last night. Today it seems she’s going in the opposite direction.

Victor: Yeah, I can see that. Nick and I are very concerned about her.

Jack: I think she’s covering but I can feel her heartache.

Victor: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, boy, that’s beautiful. You know, when nikki and i left the club last night, I was still hoping for the best and then nicholas called with the bad news.

Jack: Yeah, we were all devastated. I still find it unbelievable.

Victor: If you don’t mind me asking you, don’t you find it strange that the ambulance crashed and then burned?

Jack: Bizarre twist of events, isn’t it?

Victor: Yeah, then my people went to the crash site, and they realized that the ambulance had taken a rather secluded route to get to the hospital.

Jack: They were on collins road.

Victor: Yes.

Jack: I have no idea why.

Victor: I have no clue. Let me ask you something. Do you think your engagement announcement to diane may have set phyllis off?

Jack: Whoa, I’m gonna interrupt you there. I hope you’re not suggesting diane is to blame for any of this.

Victor: Jack, I’m simply trying to find out what happened.

Jack: Well, if it’s answers you want, I suggest you start with jeremy stark. I am convinced all roads lead to his door.

Victor: Mm-hmm. I kind of agree. But I wonder if they’re asking him the right questions? Ultomiris is for adults with generalized myasthenia gravis

Sally: Nick… summer is gonna find a way through this. You know why? Because of you. She has you, her incredible father and I have absolutely no doubt that you’re gonna help her find a way through this.

Nick: God knows I want that, but she’s already shutting me out.

Sally: Summer is reeling right now. She probably doesn’t know what or how to feel. You know, she’s in uncharted emotional territory, and… look, I relate to that. She just needs you to guide her like you’ve been doing for me with this pregnancy.

Nick: That’s exactly what I want. I can’t be too forceful about it, I risk pushing her away.

Sally: Summer will come to you, when she’s ready. Your daughter adores you. I think she just wants to know that you’re gonna be there for her and that you will always be there.

Nick: I’d do anything to take her pain away. To magically make her feel safe and secure, like when she was a little girl. I’d give her a big hug, give her that beat up old rabbit that she loved so much, mr. Ears… and promise her that everything is gonna be okay. You know what? I can’t make that promise anymore. Her mother’s gone… and nothing will ever be the same again.

Christine: Well, I can see why you were so unsettled by phyllis’ message. You two were so close and– and you consider diane a friend too. So you have to be so conflicted on this.

Michael: You think? I’ve made a point of trying to be a buffer zone between those two warring factions. But as you can well imagine, some of those times are much harder than others.

Christine: Okay, so the voice mail, what do you make of it?

Michael: I don’t have enough facts to reach a firm conclusion. We both know phyllis wasn’t afraid of anything. I initially dismissed stark’s claim that phyllis was afraid of diane because clearly the man had his own agenda. But for phyllis to leave a message like this…

Christine: It’s rather stunning to think of phyllis frightened.

Michael: I remember during phyllis’s tirade before she passed out, she told everybody that she had to speak out to protect herself.

Christine: She was clearly afraid of diane. But why?

Jeremy: Yeah, that’s right. I need a car for one passenger to the airport. Thanks.

Phyllis: Why are you calling me a car? I don’t know where I want to go yet.

Jeremy: Okay, it really doesn’t matter because you need to get as far away from this place as possible. All right? Just– just pick a place and as soon as you’re safely away from genoa city, then you can pick a new home base or travel the world.

Phyllis: Well, I wouldn’t even know where to fly to because I don’t know where I wanna go.

Jeremy: Just pick a place. It’s too dangerous for you to be here. You’re leaving tonight.
