[ Door opens ]
Diane: You came back.
Jack: I have no desire to be here. But it’s pretty obvious you’re not gonna let this go till you say what you have to say. Say it.
Diane: I know you’re angry and confused —
Jack: No, I’m a lot more than angry.
Diane: But there’s a reason for all of it.
Jack: A reason you dragged my grieving granddaughter into your little game? By the way, that’s over. She is off limits. This is between you and me. No one else. No one.
Phyllis: Hey, jack. It’s me. Um, I just wanted to know how you were doing. Um…you know, I know it’s pretty emotional for you, getting together with allie. Um…I just know it’s complicated. You know, there’s a lot going on. So, anyway, um, I just wanted you to know that I am here for you. Whatever you need, I am here for you. You can call anytime. And I really mean that — anytime, um, day or night. Don’t even worry about the time difference. Um, okay, I’ll talk to you later.
[ Cellphone thuds ]
Diane: My contact with allie was never about deception. It was about reaching out. Trying to give you back something that you didn’t even know you’d lost.
Jack: I hope you don’t expect her to thank you.
Diane: But what about you? I know you’re grateful.
Jack: Oh, is that what you want? A thank-you? Thank you, diane. Are we done here?
Diane: I’m trying to make amends.
Jack: To me. Not to the people you hurt. The people you used and exploited. The people accused of your murder. All you left in your wake was heartache and fear and anger. Some of us got over it. Others? Like kyle? You stole from him something he can never get back. [ Gasps ]
Jack: Can I get you anything at all?
Kyle: Yeah. My mom.
Jack: Look, I know you didn’t want to talk about it on the plane.
Kyle: Talking won’t bring her back.
Jack: Try to remember something, okay?
Kyle: Okay, what?
Jack: Your mother loved you more than anything in the world. You were her whole life, the best part of her, she used to say. And there is nothing she wouldn’t have done for you.
Jack: Your tore that little boy’s heart out. And for that, I will never forgive you.
Diane: You may not forgive me, but maybe, if you listen, you’ll finally understand.

Lauren: Hi.
Phyllis: Hey! How are you doing?
Lauren: Uh, I’m good, except that I need a massage, or maybe even a manicure, anything that the escape club could cook up to help me forget about the outside world.
Phyllis: Are you okay?
Lauren: I’m, uh — I’m going through something. Um, but I just — I need to relax.
Phyllis: Oh, alright. Well, I’ll book a massage for you if that’s what you want, but I have a better idea.
Lauren: Oh?
Phyllis: Yeah.
Lauren: I’m open to anything.
Phyllis: Want to talk to a friend?
Lauren: I would love to talk to my friend, but I don’t want to interfere in your work.
Phyllis: Oh, you’re not doing that. I could use a chat.
Jack: Well, you wanted this, so let’s hear it. Tell me why you shredded genoa city and our son’s life.
Diane: [ Sighs ] If there had been another way —
Jack: Than faking your own death? Oh, I guess there was no other option.
Diane: You’re right. I did enormous damage, with too many threats, and just as many schemes. I mean, victor hated me by then. And nikki and phyllis, tucker, ashley — I had wronged them all, one way or another. The walls were closing in, and so I made a plan. I would fake my own death and take kyle far away. Only none of it happened as planned. I mean, everyone was angry. Everyone wanted me gone. I mean, in the end, I was just desperation and panic. And I needed help, and [Sighs] Deacon sharpe gave it to me.
Jack: Oh, dear god.
Diane: A corpse from the morgue created the illusion. And limiting the people who saw me dead was key. And paying off anyone who could reveal the truth completed the effect. But when it was time, I couldn’t meet up with kyle. I knew that we would never outrun you, and I just — I — I couldn’t do that to him.
[ Voice breaking ] Having the world hate me was hard. But leaving kyle was soul-crushing, jack. I was so broken and I felt so worthless. And…well, then I just convinced myself that he was better off without me. You know, my — my only solace was he had a father who would love and protect him. Jack, I knew you would do whatever you could for him. And he was safe and loved with you. And I had nothing, and I had no one. And so I came west.
Jack: You ran away.
Diane: I did.
Jack: You didn’t take responsibility. You didn’t face the people that you abused.
Diane: Everybody wanted me gone, jack. I mean, I was truly hated, and — and, in time, I hated myself. I mean, all the self-loathing and — and the guilt and the shame. And [Exhales sharply] I thought, “why not? You know, the whole world thinks you’re dead. Why don’t you just give them what they want?”
Jack: So it was self-pity that motivated you, not caring about anyone else.
Diane: Fair enough. So, I — [ Chuckles ] I finally went to therapy. And I had to look at what I had done and why I had done it. And it took me years to come to terms with who I’d been, but who I wanted to be. But always, always, I held kyle in my heart. Any glimpse I saw of him on the internet — I mean, those were moments of pure joy. He was so beautiful and smart and strong. And, jack, it was obvious. You had made him into such a wonderful man. He’s got college, a career, maybe some heartbreak. But now he’s in milan with a wife and child. Jack, we’re grandparents.
Jack: We are nothing. You are kyle’s late mother. That’s what you chose.
Diane: Yes, and for many years that was the kindest thing I could do for him. I mean, to not burden him with my chaos. And — and — and, what, going back, admitting to him that I’d faked my death? I mean, how could I do that to him? How could I just upturn his life again?
Jack: Exactly. It is the one decent thing you did in this whole marvelous journey of self-discovery. Good for you. Congratulations. But we both know there’s more. What is it you want, diane? Attention? Absolution? Money? All three? Just tell me what you’re after so we can be done with this.
[Music: Sung by craig robinson]
Lauren: So, when michael retired from the da’s office, it was, you know, so we could spend more time together.
Phyllis: Mm.
Lauren: So he could have this quieter, simpler life.
Phyllis: And he worked for victor newman. Wow.
Lauren: [ Laughs ] Right. Exactly my reaction. Um, so he said not to worry, it’s not gonna interfere with our time together and he’s gonna make his own hours. And it’s not gonna be dangerous or risky.
Phyllis: What does victor have him doing?
Lauren: I can’t exactly get into specifics.
Phyllis: Ah.
Lauren: But let’s just say that a very routine assignment was anything but that. I went days without hearing from him.
Phyllis: Really? So he thinks it’s a wild adventure, and you’re just worried sick, right?
Lauren: Right. That’s why I’m so frustrated. How do I fight it? Do I just accept this new unpredictable lifestyle of his?
Phyllis: I mean, why is it that the thing that we love about someone is also the thing that just drives us crazy and makes us worry about them?
Lauren: [ Chuckles ]
Diane: You have no good memories of us? None at all? Because I do. From the very beginning. Of course I had my heart broken more than once. But it was worth it just to be in your life.
Jack: That was decades ago, diane. If you’re still holding on to that, I can’t help you. There was far more bad than good. Mountains of bad.
Jack: Diane, I don’t know what part of your little 12-step program I am.
Diane: As I said, I was passing through town. I happened to run into a man i was engaged to once, and i decided to speak from the heart.
Jack: Well, if you’re expecting the same thing from me, sorry. I’ve been there and done that.
Diane: No regrets?
Jack: None.
Diane: You mentioned you were talking about me this morning.
Jack: Yeah. To phyllis. She found an old set of plans you drew up for our dream house.
Diane: And you kept them all this time? How sweet.
Jack: I tore them this morning.
Diane: Oh.
Jack: I told phyllis all about our little “fiasco.” How while you were drawing up those plans, you were also starting a relationship with victor newman. How our entire relationship was a waste of time.
Diane: Ouch. That hurts.
Jack: You’re looking prosperous. Obviously, you’re doing well.
Diane: Yes, I am, thank you.
Jack: Good. I hate to kick someone while they’re down.
Diane: [ Scoffs ] Someplace you need to be?
Jack: Yep.
[ Dishware clatters ]
Diane: Do you have any parting words for an old flame?
Jack: As a matter of fact, I do. I’ve come to realize over time that victor newman did me a favor. Taking you off my hands. In fact, it’s the only nice thing he’s ever done for me. Goodbye, diane. Have a nice life.
Diane: Maybe we were too much alike. But the spark was addictive. Well, for me at least. And there was love.
Diane: [ Exhales sharply ] I can’t believe it.
Jack: What, something wrong?
Diane: It’s — it’s — oh, my gosh. Oh.
[ Sighs ] It’s a beautiful diamond engagement ring.
Jack: I love you. Please say you’ll be my bride. Here. Let’s see what a little champagne will do to add sparkle to a diamond. Here. Say you’ll be my wife. Make me the happiest man on the planet.
Diane: I loved you, jack. And I know there was a time that you loved me, too.
Jack: That died before you did. There’s no whipping up nostalgia. There’s no “good old times.” Any warm or even neutral feelings I had for you are gone. Obliterated by this latest stunt.
Diane: Stunt? I brought allie into your life. And more importantly, I brought kyle into this world. No matter what, that connects us. And I know that means something to you, too.
Lauren: And why do I feel like we’re not talking about michael anymore? Are you worried about jack?
Phyllis: Why do you think I’m worried about jack?
Lauren: Because I’ve heard you talk about him for months, and whatever’s going on with him must be pretty significant. And don’t deny it. You said you needed to talk to a friend as much as I did.
Phyllis: Well, it’s not a big deal. Really. I wasn’t worried about him. But now I’m wondering if i should be.
Jack: Yes, bringing kyle into this world is the one good thing you ever did. What about now, diane? Keemo. Allie. The mysterious texts. Hell, you bought this entire house just to talk to me. Think about that. Think about how absurd that sounds. The money, the time. The pretense. Does that sounds normal to you?
Diane: My thought was, it’s time. I have faced my mistakes. I’ve accepted the past, and i have done the work. The old diane truly is dead. And it is time to make amends.
Jack: I’m afraid there’s more than just me.
Diane: Yes, there are many others.
Jack: Yes. Who have gotten on with their lives without knowing you are a changed woman.
Diane: When keemo died, you lost any chance at being part of his life. And then I guided you to allie. The granddaughter you would have never have known otherwise. Because I know that family means the world to you, jack. Just as it does to me. [ Sighs ] So, all I’m asking is —
Jack: You want me to help you connect to kyle.
Jack: And there it is. The demand.
Diane: A request. That you of all people should understand. How could I not want to reconnect with my son?
Jack: You just said yourself you are toxic!
Diane: In the past, yes. Absolutely. But not now.
Jack: Now? You manipulated allie. You deceived me. Sent me mysterious texts so I’d find my son’s obituary. In what world is that reformed?!
Diane: I protected kyle by leaving. I did what was best for his sake. But he’s a grown man now. He’s a father. He — he knows how deep a parent’s love goes. Jack, he’s in a better place to understand my love for him. And I’m in a better, stronger place. I could be a healthy presence in his life. Oh, come on. You can’t tell me you don’t remember those moments when we’d look at that little boy and we marveled at how perfect anything could be.
Jack: I remember a lot, diane. I remember how hard you worked to keep my son from me. Shipping him off to switzerland, changing his name so I couldn’t find him. Timothy, wasn’t it?
Diane: Okay, that was when i was spinning out, and I regret every moment. But I have changed.
Jack: So you’ve said.
Diane: So have you jack, so don’t pretend it’s not possible. You were so cold and — and callous in the past. You were using people. Vindictive. Focused on revenge. But you’re not that person anymore. So why is it so impossible to believe that the same thing couldn’t happen for me?
Lauren: Jack is my friend, too. If there’s something to worry about, I would like to know.
Phyllis: Well, it’s not my news to share.
[ Footsteps passing ] He’s in los angeles dealing with something from his past. Oh, I shouldn’t have said that! Why’d I say that? It’s not my news to share. Don’t be concerned. I encouraged him to go.
Lauren: Alright, so then why are you stressing out about it? Are — are you having second thoughts?
Phyllis: Well, no, I’m not. I just — I’m worried about him. I — I should have gone with him. I’m worried about him facing this alone.
Diane: Kyle is my son.
Jack: You said yourself he’s a grown man. He has built a wonderful life with his family. You think I’m gonna let you destroy that? Poison his life in italy? No. Never. So you go back to your new and improved life. I’ll go back to genoa city and forget this ever happened.
Diane: But you won’T. You can’T. That’s not the man you are, jack. You love kyle with your whole heart. And half of him is me.
Jack: He grieved, diane.
Diane: [ Exhales sharply ]
Jack: Cried himself to sleep night after night. His mother died. She was killed. He was lost, confused. Heartbroken. He had his mother ripped from his life. I know this because I was there. I held him. I tried to comfort him by telling him it wouldn’t always hurt so much, that I would always be there to protect him. Why would I stop doing that now?!
Diane: Our son needs me in his life. He deserves his mother.
Jack: A real mother. Not you.
Diane: [ Scoffs ]
Jack: And you sure as hell don’t deserve him.
Diane: [ Sighs ]
Jack: Goodbye, diane.
[ Door opens ]
Diane: [ Breathes deeply ]
[ Exhales heavily ] Charmin ultra soft has so much cushiony softness,
“The young and the restless”
will continue. Be ready for whatever life throws your way.
Jack: You’re not really worried that I have feelings for diane jenkins?
Phyllis: No, because I know you’re in love with me.
Jack: That’s right. Body and soul.
Phyllis: Yet you chose to get involved with this woman again and again?
Jack: My history with diane goes way back. I met her when she was a model at jabot. Hell, I should’ve learned my lesson then and gotten her the hell out of my life.
Phyllis: But you didn’T.
Jack: No, I didn’T. She came back into town, and I got sucked right back in. And that, of course, is when i got my comeuppance from victor newman. Actually, I should be thanking the mustache. He did finally get diane out of my life once and for all.
Phyllis: And victor got his own comeuppance.
Jack: Oh, you mean the ugly divorce. Yeah. The final blow came when diane found out that, uh, the baby she was carrying wasn’t victor’s, as she had insisted it was.
Phyllis: That’s when she split out of town.
Jack: Yep. Any trace of diane jenkins is out of my life forever.
Jack: Diane’s son kyle… is my child.
Phyllis: How?
Jack: You know the circumstances surrounding how she got pregnant.
Phyllis: Yeah, I do. I know that she stole sperm from a reproductive lab.
Jack: Okay, what — what — what you don’t is that a couple of years ago I had a testicular cancer scare. My doctor suggested as a precaution, I leave a sample at robertson reproduction labs. It turns out now that victor’s swimmers were switched with mine. And the mystery father is yours truly.
Phyllis: Nikki is responsible for the switch.
Jack: Nikki is not responsible for this.
Phyllis: Yes. Right. Right.
Jack: Nikki never even met the man that switched the samples.
Phyllis: So, what are you telling me? It’s a coincidence?
Jack: Yes. Yes.
Phyllis: Bull. It’s not a coincidence. Give me a break. Nikki is responsible for this. Or maybe diane. I mean, we both know that she has a thing for you. Somebody is responsible for this, jack.
Jack: Listen to me. Nikki would never do anything consciously to mess me up.
Phyllis: What about diane?
Jack: Diane — if she had known, why would she leave the country for a year? Why would she go through the public humiliation she went through with victor? She could have come to me. You and I weren’t together then. Besides, I’ve seen diane. She’s as messed up by all this as I am.
Phyllis: Oh, I’m sure she is. Oh, I’m sure she’s so messed up. Jack, this is absolutely unbelievable.
Jack: Phyllis, I need desperately for you to understand this.
Phyllis: Oh, god. You know what? Yeah, I understand all of this. But you know what I don’t understand, is if you and diane just found out about this, what is she gonna do? Just give up her kid to you and me and go merrily back to milan? Is that the story?
Jack: Not exactly.
Phyllis: Not exactly. Right. Wow. There’s that phrase again. Don’t you tell me that you’re thinking of going to court over this. Don’t you dare tell me you’re thinking of making diane stay in genoa city so we can share custody with and her and have this bitch in our life 24/7. Don’t you dare tell me you’re thinking of that.
[ Cellphone pings ]
Lauren: Thank you. You know, I’m sure jack appreciates your willingness to support him and your opinions.
Phyllis: Well, I don’t know about that. You know, I think he’s tired of my opinions.
Lauren: [ Laughs ]
Phyllis: And I’m sort of walking the line of being a friend and meddling.
Lauren: Yeah, but based on what you’ve said to me, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
Phyllis: Yeah. Listen, this is no big deal compared to what you’re going through with michael. And it’s fine. Jack and I are friends, and it’ll be fine. It’s just — [ Stammers ] I’ve been calling him and he’s not answering and he usually answers and it just makes me anxious.
Lauren: I get that.
Phyllis: Yeah.
Lauren: But I’m sure he can handle whatever’s going on in los angeles. He’s a very capable man, just like michael.
Phyllis: Yeah, he is. He just has this big, amazing heart. And it’s a good thing. But it can cause him to get blind-sided in the worst way.
Diane: Why don’t you sit on the couch with kyle between us? We’ll play with some of your old toys, and that’ll keep him happy.
Jack: Okay.
Diane: That’s right.
Jack: There we go.
Diane: Look, sweetie. This was daddy’S.
Jack: What do you think of that?
Diane: He likes it. I know you don’t trust me, jack. You’ve made that very clear. But still, seeing you and kyle together like this makes me wish that there could be a better solution to this mess. In fact, it makes me certain that there must be a better way. He deserves that.
Jack: I had a great time.
Kyle: Me, too.
Jack: I’m really proud of you, son. You have no idea. You’ve turned into a great kid. And I know that wasn’t my doing.
Diane: Oh, don’t be so sure.
Jack: Don’t forget our deal.
Kyle: I won’T.
Diane: What “deal”?
Kyle: The next time a father/son event comes up… dad wants to be there.
Diane: Well, I hope he is.
Diane: [ Sighs ] And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,
[ Cellphone ringing ]
Phyllis: Oh, it’s jack!
Lauren: Excellent timing. He could tell you were thinking of him.
Phyllis: Yes. Yeah. I’ll be right back. Hey, jack! What is going on? Um, I tried to call. I’ve been worried. I’ve left messages.
Jack: Yeah, I got them. I appreciate all of them.
Phyllis: Okay. Are you okay?
Jack: I’ve been spending some time with allie.
Phyllis: Oh. And how is that time going?
Jack: You know, I’ll tell you all about it when I get back.
Phyllis: There’s something going on. I can hear it in your voice.
Jack: I’ll handle it.
Phyllis: Okay, now it’s worse.
Jack: I’ll be back as soon as I can.
Phyllis: Okay. I’ll be here.
Jack: Don’t worry. Hi.
Allie: Hi. Thanks. So, how did it go? With diane?
Jack: Listen to me. Diane is not your problem. Forget about her. Forget you ever even met her.
Allie: She’ll be living in my dad’s house.
Jack: [ Sighs ]
Allie: Which she only bought to go through me to get to you. God, it feels so wrong. Like a violation.
Jack: I am so sorry.
Allie: It’s not your fault.
Jack: No, I still responsible. Diane wants to be near kyle, and that’s the last place she should be.
Allie: She abandoned her son when he was a child who needed her. But after all this time, she wants him back.
Jack: Well, that’s not gonna happen. And I told her to stay away from you from now on.
Allie: But will she stay away from you?
Jack: I can handle diane.
[ Breathes deeply ] What? What — what does that look mean?
Allie: [ Laughs ] Nothing. Nothing. It’s just… you know, I can see some of my dad in you. He gets pretty fierce when he gets protective.
Jack: He was like that, was he?
Allie: Very much so. I would need to tell him to tone it down sometimes.
Jack: I’d like to learn more about how keemo — how hao was as a father.
Allie: I have stories. But the thing is…
Jack: Go ahead.
Allie: I’d like to learn about you, too. You and your family.
Jack: It’s your family, too. Yeah, that’s great. What do you want to talk about first? Uh, your great aunts? Your cousins? Your uncle kyle who’s pretty close to your age?
Allie: This is surreal.
Jack: Yeah, it really is. And so much better than I ever expected.
Lauren: Do you feel better now that you’ve spoken to jack?
Phyllis: No. I feel worse. Something’s wrong.
Lauren: What did he say?
Phyllis: He didn’t say anything. It was the tone of his voice. I’ve heard that tone before.
Lauren: Hmm. So this is about his past.
Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Oh, yeah. It has to do with his family.
Lauren: Ah, the most important thing to him.
Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, it’s where all of his emotional scars come from, going all the way back to dina.
Lauren: Yeah, but you don’t ever get over the abandonment of a parent. I can certainly relate. I have had a really hard time with my mom.
Phyllis: You know, I heard that when dina first came into town to rebuild a relationship with her adult kids, right, that traci and ashley were very cautious about their feelings, you know? They weren’t very vulnerable.
Lauren: I knew the family back then, and that’s exactly how I remember it.
Phyllis: But it wasn’t like that with jack, you know? He — he let her in, you know, only to get the rug ripped out from under him time and time again.
Lauren: But, you know, that’s jack, you know? He has that capacity for love and forgiveness.
Phyllis: Yeah, he gets hurt over again and again. I’m guilty of that. I’ve hurt him a lot. I just stick the knife in and twist it.
Lauren: But you two are beyond that now.
Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. I feel that we are. I mean, that’s why I’m very, very careful with him, you know? He means a lot to me. And, um, I never want to hurt him again. Uh, I could never do that to him.
Diane: Are you telling me that —
Jack: The two of you can move in temporarily until you’re able to decide which job to take. I am hoping, yes, in appreciation for my generosity, you might not move halfway around the world.
Diane: Have you spoken to anyone else about this?
Jack: Any family? No. No. I haven’t talked to my father yet.
Diane: So, you think he’ll agree?
Jack: Look, I’ll see to it that this works out. At any rate, you’ll be staying at the pool house.
Diane: The pool house?
Jack: It’s perfectly comfortable.
Diane: It’s not exactly a home.
Jack: Hey, it’s right next to the home.
Diane: No, still, that’s not what I had in mind.
Jack: Diane, given the circumstances, I thought it best for everyone concerned to keep a little distance between you and phyllis.
Diane: I knew that’s what this was about.
Jack: What the devil did you expect?
Diane: [ Scoffs ]
Jack: Look, I want this to work out. I am not gonna roll over my wife like some bulldozer. I have to take — no, i want to take her feelings into consideration.
Diane: Which means what? Sticking your son and me in some outbuilding so she won’t make waves? Well, thanks a lot, jack, for nothing!
[ Footsteps departing ]
Diane: [ Sighs ] I’m amber, I’ve lost 128 pounds with golo,
Jack: Oh, yeah. Breakfast is the great abbott family tradition. Best way to start any day. No matter how busy all of us are, we always make time for cinnamon rolls and bacon.
Allie: [ Chuckling ] Oh, wow. Thank you. That sounds amazing. I guess as an only child, I kind of missed out on that kind of thing.
Jack: Well, I never knew what it was like to grow up in a small family.
Allie: Oh, I got plenty of attention. Whenever I needed my dad, he was always there for me.
Jack: Your dad loved you very much.
Allie: [ Chuckles ] Even when I didn’t want him around.
Jack: A little too attentive sometimes?
Allie: Believe it or not, I was a mathlete. I know. Totally uncool. And having him show up to give me a one-man standing ovation at all our school competitions was just downright embarrassing.
[ Laughs ]
Lauren: You really think this situation in los angeles is going to lead to jack getting hurt?
Phyllis: Well, after that phone call, I’m just convinced that something is wrong. I don’t know what it is, but something is wrong. I mean, I spoke to him earlier, and he was fine. And then I spoke to somebody else who’s worried about jack’s situation, and that stirred up all these protective feelings that I have. And then that phone call that i just had with him, it was totally different. He had a totally different vibe than he had before. So, something has happened in between those two calls.
Lauren: I know. I know. You’re concerned about him.
[ Sighs ] Right now michael is home resting and recovering because he won’t let this thing go and he’s not gonna stop until he’s righted a wrong. So…I completely understand. You love him, and you don’t want to see him hurt. It’s as simple as that.
Diane: [ Breathes deeply ]
Next week on
“the young and the restless”…
Nikki: To have michael held captive in a foreign country? How can he do that to someone?
Victor: He’s not gonna get away with it.
Billy: Victoria, I need to talk to you…now.
Diane: Phyllis. I didn’t know you were in town.
Phyllis: I didn’t know you were alive. I have a lot of nausea, <
