[ Dramatic music ]

Hope: Tell me, dad, what are you going to do?

Deacon: Do? I’m not planning on doing anything.

Hope: Oh, so you are going to keep it a secret that you and mom were drinking and… that you two kissed and you spent the night together in her bed?

Brooke: Do you think I’m making a mistake not telling ridge? I mean, if he finds out some other way…

Liam: On the one hand, I mean, I know you’d feel better if you were honest. On the other, ridge hates deacon like the wind blows, so I understand the instinct to keep quiet and forget it ever happened.

Brooke: Yeah, well it’s kind of hard to forget it ever happened knowing that douglas thinks he saw me kissing santa. Oh, my god. He saw.

Douglas: Dad, dad, a bald eagle!

Thomas: Really? Let me see!

Steffy: Hey, douglas and thomas–

Thomas: Uh-huh!

Steffy: Kelly and hayes are sleeping so I try not to shout, okay?

Douglas: Sorry aunt steffy.

Steffy: It’s okay. Bald eagles are super cool.

Thomas: You know what? I think what we got here is actually a seagull.

Douglas: Ah, man.

Thomas: It’s all right.

Steffy: I think, uh, douglas may need to get his eyes checked. First, he sees bald eagles, the other day he saw grandma kissing santa claus.

Thomas: That’s true. This guy might need some glasses. Hey, you know, that steffy and I are just joking, right?

Douglas: I know.

Thomas: Douglas. You okay?

Grace: Did you see zende? See how his date went?

Paris: I haven’t seen him but I assume that he will fill me in next time I do.

Grace: You still don’t think it’s odd? This man who was about to propose to you is already out on another–

Paris: Mom, can we– can we not do this right now? I realize that you don’t understand but things were just moving too fast. And this is a good reset for us. We still hang out. We still have a connection. There’s just a little bit more freedom.

Grace: Freedom? Freedom to do what? Date other men and be disappointed? Because from what I’ve seen, you cannot pick a better man than zende.

Grace: Am I wrong?

Grace: Is there something you’re not telling me? A reason why zende would be a bad match for you?

Paris: Oh, carter! Hey.

Carter: Hey, paris. Grace. It’s nice to see you.

Grace: Nice to see you, too.

Carter: Am I interrupting?

Grace: Paris and I were talking about zende and how she turned down a proposal.

Paris: Okay, mom. That’s not public information. And zende doesn’t even realize that I knew that he was going to propose. I stopped him before he could pull out the ring.

Grace: Because you were steering the conversation, made him second guess. That’s the strangest thing, right? Did you know about this?

Paris: I didn’t want to hurt zende by rejecting him. I don’t know why that feels strange to you.

Grace: What’s strange is you wanting to reject him in the first place. How many phone calls have we had where you went on and on about how much you liked him?

Paris: I don’t know. What can I say? I–I’m just not ready.

Thomas: Is everything all right, douglas? If something’s bothering you, you can talk to me about it.

Brooke: I can’t believe douglas saw that kiss.

Liam: Ah! A kiss between you and santa, though. Not deacon. Right? This–brooke, this is–I’m pretty sure this is the kind of thing kids forget about, right? He’s going to get older. He’ll grow up. He’ll have this fuzzy sort of memory. Assume it was a dream.

Brooke: What if he remembers everything? What if in the future he starts asking questions and trying to figure out who I was with? I can’t let this get out, liam. I can’T.

Hope: If you were to go to ridge and tell him what happened…

Deacon: The guy I used to be? Oh man, would I have enjoyed that!

Hope: But the guy you are now?

Deacon: I’ve given a lot of thought to a future with your mom. I’ve dreamt about it. And ridge, if he leaves her, that’s my foot in the door, right? But, as much as I want it to happen, I don’t want it to happen that way. I’d never do that to your mother. I’d never betray her trust like that, so no, I won’t say anything, not to anyone. I promise. (Peaceful music)

Grace: Carter, I apologize. As much as I enjoy being an overbearing mother, I did not intend to interrogate paris in front of you. I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around this. I mean, zende is handsome, he’s smart. He’s got all the right attributes. Good family, good values.

Carter: She’s not wrong.

Paris: No, she’s not.

Carter: Zende is a great guy.

Grace: If you won’t listen to me, then listen to carter, sounds like he agrees zende is too good to pass up.

Liam: I don’t think you have to worry about douglas.

Brooke: Yeah. Some grandmother I turned out to be, huh?

Liam: Hey. From what I understand, all you did–all you did was encourage him not to talk about it anymore.

Brooke: What choice did I have? My marriage is at stake.

Thomas: Douglas, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad about the seagull. You know, I could have said it was a bald eagle but I don’t like lying to you.

[ Baby babbling ]

Steffy: Oh. I think kelly is waking up.

Douglas: Can I go play with her?

Steffy: Uh, yeah, yeah, of course. Let me know if you guys need a snack or anything, okay?

Douglas: Okay.

Thomas: I don’t know what’s going on with him. It’s like one minute he’s fine and the next…

Steffy: Would it have killed you to pretend it was a bald eagle?

Thomas: I don’t like lying to him. Also–I’m just going to talk to the mom about this, all right?

Steffy: I mean, she’s a psychiatrist. Take advantage of that.

Thomas: That is true.

Steffy: You know who else should take advantage? Dad.

Thomas: Yeah. Well, with everything he’s got going on over there at brooke’S…

Steffy: Oh, I know, I can’t believe it. If dad and mom just stayed together, if he hadn’t gone back to brooke, his life would have been so much better. If he had just chosen differently in the past, he wouldn’t be dealing with deacon today.

Hope: You really do love her, don’t you?

Deacon: What was your first clue? The kiss? Or, the fact that I’m willing to keep it a secret?

Hope: Both, I suppose. But it’s, I don’t know, comforting. And I am not condoning it. Not at all. I’m just saying it’s nice to know that when the two of you were vulnerable and you kissed, that maybe you really did care for each other back when I was born. An it was more than just some scandal. Maybe if things had turned out differently…

Deacon: Yeah, well, you know, I–I try not to let myself go back. I’ll tell you this though, if I ever did get another shot with your mother, I would do everything to make every day of her life full of happiness.

Hope: Yeah, I bet you would. Well, I should get going but thank you again… for what you’re doing for mom. I–I do, appreciate it.

Deacon: Okay well, hug those grandkids for me, all right?

Hope: I will.

Deacon: Okay.

Hope: Bye.

Sheila: You and brooke. On new year’s eve. Yo you ready?

Grace: Paris, I’m not trying to marry you off. I get that you’re not ready for a lifelong commitment. It’s just, I’m confused. I keep hearing in my head everything you’ve told me about zende since you first met. It seems to me a guy like zende doesn’t come along every day. Am I right?

Carter: Yeah.

Paris: Mom, just please understand zende is very special to me and we’re still seeing where things go.

Grace: You want to see what else is out there? Is that it? You worry that maybe you are too young to have already found the one, that maybe there’s someone more exciting, more fun? Listen to me, a word of advice: I went for the guy that was a little more dangerous, that was more exciting, and look what happened.

Paris: Yeah, I hear you. But can we maybe talk about this later?

Grace: Okay, of course. I know you two are busy so I’ll let you get back to work. But if you won’t listen to me, then listen to carter. He knows zende a lot better than I do. Maybe he can give you some insight I can’T.

Deacon: I’d thought you’d left.

Sheila: Oh, I’m a sucker for the bread sticks. I couldn’t help but pull up a chair and have a seat right within earshot.

Deacon: So you were eavesdropping?

Sheila: Eavesdropping, no. That would mean it was intentional. I was just trying to read my menu. I couldn’t help it if a couple people were talking so loud that I could overhear what they were saying.

Deacon: What did you hear? Sheila…

Sheila: I’m a little hurt, deacon, that you didn’t tell me yourself. You and brooke? Drinking buddies. Wow. Who would have imagined that?

Liam: So how’d it go?

Hope: Uh, great, actually.

Brooke: How did what go?

Liam: Uh, you know, I wa–I um, I wasn’t sure if I should tell you just ’cause I didn’t want to worry you any more than you already are.

Brooke: Worry me?

Liam: Ye–yeah.

Brooke: What’s going on?

Hope: Well, I went to go see dad and to ask him for some reassurance. And I got it. He promised me that he wouldn’t tell anyone about that kiss.

Thomas: I think about that a lot, you know? How different things would be,

Steffy: Yeah, if he stood by her all those years instead of just leaving.

Thomas: Look, we need to stop talking about this. I want I know that as much as you do but dad is committed to brooke.

Steffy: Yeah.

Douglas: Um, aunt steffy. Kelly needs you.

Steffy: Yeah, what’s going on?

Douglas: I don’t know. Something about her hair.

Steffy: Oh, okay. A hair emergency. I’ll be right back.

Thomas: Okay. Douglas. You didn’t really answer me before about what’s bothering you. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to but I hope you can talk to me about anything.

Douglas: It’s just, I’m not really supposed to. Besides, I already told you.

Thomas: Told me about what?

Douglas: Grandma, kissing santa?

Thomas: Why do you keep saying that?

Douglas: Because it’s true.

Living with diabetes?

Paris: Well, you heard my mom. Care to give me a little insight?

Carter: She is lobbying hard, isn’t she?

Paris: Well, zende is the perfect guy on paper…

Carter: But?

Paris: There is someone that I can’t stop thinking about.

Carter: And I can’t stop thinking about you, either.

Paris: Carter, I know that you said you can’t do this but isn’t there a part of you knowing this is worth pursuing?

Carter: It’d be complicated given how your mom thinks, knowing how ridge and the forresters would react. But the way I’m feeling…

Deacon: You caught me, red-handed, drinking with brooke. But sheila, you gotta understand why I didn’t tell you. She’s not supposed to be drinking.

Sheila: No, no, she certainly isn’T. Poor thing, falling off the wagon. I… wonder what could have made that happen.

Brooke: I am going to make

certain that you are out of all

of our lives, once and for all.

Deacon: Yeah, I mean, that’s just it. She doesn’t know why it happened.

Sheila: It actually worked,

I turned brooke back

into a mush.

[ Sheila chuckling ]

Deacon: All those years sober and then suddenly she just had to have it. I guess it’s like they say, alcoholism, you know, it’s cunning, baffling and powerful.

Sheila: You know what I call it? I call it, “karma’s a bitch.”

Deacon: Come on, sheila. Don’t talk about brooke that way.

Sheila: Okay, look, I realize she takes her sobriety very serious. And it’s a shame. It’s a shame that she had this little stumble. It’s too bad that it turned the evening so ugly for her and for you too. I’m assuming she’s a mean drunk.

Deacon: No, she’s not a drunk, sheila. She’s an alcoholic. And this little setback is not gonna define her. I–I know you’d love nothing more than for her world to come crumbling down but I’m telling you that’s not going to happen.

Brooke: Well, that’s good news. I mean, that’s very good news, right? If deacon and I can put it behind us and no maybe I will get through this.

Hope: And you know liam and I would never breathe a word about this.

Liam: No.

Brooke: Yeah, but then there’s douglas, my sweet, honest, little grandson. He saw that kiss.

Hope: A magical kiss with santa. That’s what he thinks he saw. And that’s all that he’ll remember about that night.

Brooke: Okay.

Thomas: You actually saw grandma brooke kissing santa?

Thomas: But she said it’s in the past. No need to talk about it, anymore.

Thomas: Okay. I’m–I’m gonna guess that it was grandpa ridge you saw her kissing, right? Because I mean, it’s christmas eve. Santa’s too busy for kisses.

Douglas: It wasn’t christmas eve. It was new year’S.

Thomas: You’re sure?

Douglas: Positive.

Thomas: Why do you think it was santa?

Douglas: ‘Cause of the hat. Only santa wears that kind of hat.

Thomas: Did you see… his face? Did you see santa’s face?

Douglas: I– I don’t think so.

Thomas: Okay. Because you know, it might actually have been one of santa’s helpers. ‘Cause santa’s really busy that time of year, right? So he has people who go around and help him with things. Maybe it might be someone you know. Think back. Think really hard. Who did you see, douglas? Who was santa? Who was kissing grandma brooke? It was mommy’s dad.

Thomas: Deacon? Grandma brooke was kissing deacon? Oh bud, it’s okay.
