ABC News announced today the premiere of “Truth and Lies: The Last Gangster,” a two-hour event special on the infamous Gambino mob family, featuring a new interview with one of the most notorious hitmen in mafia history, Sammy “The Bull” Gravano. In a blockbuster interview, Gravano reveals secret rites and practices of the mafia and speaks candidly about the use of murder as an instrument of power and control. Gravano, a man who murdered 19 people, including his closest friend and his brother-in-law, was part of a violent brotherhood known as “Cosa Nostra.” For years he and John Gotti, the head of the Gambino family, controlled tremendous portions of New York City’s economy under a rule of fear and intimidation, and his loyalty to “The Family” came at a devastating cost. Ultimately, Gravano became a witness for the FBI, and his testimony brought down the mafia. Together with Gravano’s 1997 Diane Sawyer interview, the special features new interviews with Gravano’s son Gerard and daughter Karen; Curtis Sliwa; former mobsters John Gotti Jr., Larry Mazza, Michael Francese and Anthony Ruggiano; Ruggiano’s daughter Toni Lee; companions of both Gravano and Gotti; daughters of Gravano’s victims; “Sopranos” producer and writer Terence Winter; and former FBI and NYPD officers who led the Gambino investigation. “Truth and Lies: The Last Gangster” premieres Thursday, Jan. 27 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.

For over 26 years, authorities tried to locate Jodi Huisentruit, a 27-year-old anchorwoman who vanished early one morning before heading into work in Mason City, Iowa. Now “20/20,” with reporting by co-anchor Amy Robach, explores surprising new leads in the case. In collaboration with investigative journalist and Committee Films producer Maria Awes, “20/20” features exclusive, extensive access to the Mason City Police Department and the lead investigator on Huisentruit’s case, Terrance Prochaska. It also features exclusive footage captured by “20/20” cameras as police investigated a new lead regarding a buried freezer. The two-hour program includes exclusive interviews with Krystal Doolittle and Scarlett Fleshner, who open up for the first time about how theories falsely linked Huisentruit’s disappearance to their father’s death in Mason City just three months prior, and new interviews with members of FindJodi, a team made up of journalists, a podcaster and a former police commander dedicated to collecting and investigating new tips to try to solve the mystery. “20/20” airs Friday, Jan. 28 (9:01–11:00 p.m. EST), on ABC, next day on Hulu.

“48 Hours” Investigates in “Mystery on County Road M”
Todd Kendhammer said his wife Barbara was killed in a freak accident when a pipe smashed into the windshield of their car in 2016. A Wisconsin jury didn’t believe him. He was sentenced to life in prison. Their children believe he’s innocent. Now, his new legal team says there is evidence the jury never heard. Will a judge grant a new trial?
48 HOURS and Erin Moriarty investigate the death of Barbara Kendhammer and the case against her husband in “Mystery on County Road M,” to be broadcast Saturday, Jan. 29 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+. The broadcast features the first television interviews with the couple’s children, who believe their father is innocent.
“He didn’t do this, and he deserves to come home,” says Jessica Servais, their daughter.
“He did not hurt my mom, ever,” she adds.
Todd Kendhammer told investigators his wife was injured when a pipe flew off a truck and pierced the windshield of their car. She later died at the hospital. But the story didn’t make sense to La Crosse, Wisc., prosecutor Tim Gruenke. Amongst other things, investigators were never able to find the truck, and Todd Kendhammer gave police different accounts of where he was going that morning.
“It only makes sense one way, that he caused her injuries, caused her death and tried to cover it up,” Gruenke says.
Kendhammer’s new legal team is Jerry Buting and Kathleen Stilling. They maintain there is crucial evidence in the case that the jury never heard, and they presented their findings at an evidentiary hearing this past summer. The judge in the case is expected to render a decision in the spring of 2022 on whether Todd Kendhammer will get a new trial.
“If this could happen to Todd Kendhammer, it could happen to anybody,” says Buting.
Did Kendhammer get a fair trial? 48 HOURS and Moriarty have the latest on the case.
48 HOURS: “Mystery on County Road M” is produced by Chris Young Ritzen, Jamie Stolz and Dena Goldstein. The development producers are Charlotte Fuller and Julie Kramer. 1/29/22 (Sa.) 9:00 PM CBS – A YOUNG WISCONSIN WOMAN CLAIMS SHE KILLED HER EX-BOYFRIEND IN SELF DEFENSE – WAS SHE A VICTIM OR A COLD-BLOODED MURDERER?
“48 Hours” Investigates in “The Case Against Ezra McCandless” First aired 2/8/20  Preview
Ezra McCandless, a young Wisconsin woman, told police a harrowing story of how her ex-boyfriend carved the word “boy” into her arm and then attacked her. Was she really a victim, or did she intend to kill ex-boyfriend Alex Woodworth?
McCandless was only 22 years old when she took the stand in her own defense. She appeared meek and timid and wore pink, and the small statured woman seemed an unlikely killer. Prosecutors knew that the case boiled down to whether jurors would believe McCandless was a brave victim fighting off her attacker or a desperate liar playing a master con.
Correspondent Jamie Yuccas and 48 HOURS investigate the death of Woodworth and search for answers to what happened in “The Case Against Ezra McCandless” to be broadcast Saturday, Feb. 8 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
On March 22, 2018, McCandless turned up on the doorstep at dairy farmer Don Sipple’s home. She was muddy, bloody, bruised and shoeless, asking for a doctor. She said she was a victim of an assault. Sipple called 911. Details of the attack recounted by McCandless were initially hazy, but eventually she said it was ex-boyfriend Woodworth who attacked her. The case turned, when police found Woodworth’s body on a desolate dirt road near the farmhouse. It was a brutal scene.
“I’ve been a prosecutor since 2001, and I’ve never seen anything this violent,” said Andrea Nodolf, district attorney for Dunn County, Wisc.
Yuccas and 48 HOURS take viewers inside the investigation and into the courtroom where McCandless faced a life sentence for murder. No one quite knew what to expect from a woman described by friends as someone who sought attention.
“I thought it was really interesting when she was asked to spell her name how happy she got, how much she lit up,” says childhood friend Julia Post of watching McCandless on trial. “She was kinda smiling like, ‘Yup, this is me. I get to talk about me now.’”
Ex-boyfriend Jason Mengel said when McCandless was on the stand it “didn’t seem real. “She just seemed at times to be enjoying it.”
On the stand, McCandless said on the day he died, Woodworth pulled out a knife and began to cut away her clothing.
“What’s going through my mind is, he’s going to do what he wants, he’s going to take anything he wants … I’m afraid he’s going to kill me,” McCandless said.
Woodworth’s father, John Woodworth, is upset at the way his oldest son has been portrayed, especially by the use of his son’s personal journals throughout the trial.
“It’s one thing to lose your child. It’s another to have his name dragged through the mud like this,” he told 48 HOURS.
What happened on that isolated country road near Eau Claire, Wisc.? How did a jury react to McCandless’ testimony on the stand?
“This case came down to whether you believe Ezra McCandless or not,” Nodolf said.
48 HOURS: “The Case Against Ezra McCandless” is produced by Jonathan Leach and Paul LaRosa. Emma Steele is the associate producer. Julie Kramer is the development producer. Mike Vele, Karen Brenner, Michelle Harris and Joan Adelman are the editors. Gail Zimmerman is the senior producer. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Judy Tygard is the executive producer.
