Melinda: Detectives, nice to see you have time to sit and chat.
Eli: [Sighs] I just spoke with the dive team. No further evidence of philip at the site.
Melinda: While they do their job, I suggest you that you do yours.
Lani: Meaning?
Melinda: Arrest brady black.
Both: No.
Chloe: No, philip has not been found yet. And no, there’s no updates after they discovered his leg in the water. I know, it’s–mom, it’s just–it’s really hard not to assume the worst about brady, but– you’re right. You’re right. We don’t–we don’t know anything for sure. Roman: Are you sure you don’t want a sandwich with that coffee?
Kate: No, no, I’m not hungry.
Rex: Mom, come on, you haven’t eaten all day.
Kate: Look, I’m gonna be fine. I’m gonna be fine once they find philip and I know he’s okay.
Rex: And I’m sure that we’re going to know that soon. But in the meantime, I’m here, dad’s here, and we’re going to get through this together.
Kate: I know. I know.
[Sighs] Rex, I can’t tell you how much it means to me to have you in salem.
Gwen: [Sighs] God, of all the stupid luck, rex brady back in town.
[Sighs] Come on, xander, how long does it take you to go get a newspaper? And why can’t you read it on a tablet like everyone else?
[Sighs] The last thing I need is you running into rex and finding out that sarah’s not with him. Please tell me you didn’t get a craving for the brady pub chowder. Oh, my god. Is that…rex? Bloody hell, how’s he right downstairs?
Xander: Who?
Gwen: What?

Maggie: Darling, hi. Cook is making you a rib eye steak for dinner, potatoes au gratin, a caesar salad to start, and chocolate mousse to finish. All of your favorites.
I know how hard this is for you, victor.
Victor: I can’t lose him, maggie. Dear god, if I do…
Maggie: Shh. Don’t think that way. We have to have hope. I know I do.
Victor: So do I. But he can’t be dead. He can’t be. I have to see him again. I have to tell him how sorry I am for the way I treated him.
Kate: [Sighs] That son of a bitch. I swear I could kill him. I swear I could.
Rex: Mom, if you’re talking about brady–
Kate: Well, who the hell else would I be talking about, you know? Plus, I told him to his face–i told him that if philip is dead, he’s dead too.
Roman: All right, whoa. You threatened brady? When?
Kate: This morning.
Roman: [Scoffs] You said you wanted to be alone.
Kate: Yes, well, I lied, and I snuck off to the hospital, and I confronted that bastard.
Rex: Mom, I-I know you’re upset, and that’s understandable, but there is no proof that brady did anything to philip.
Kate: Okay, there’s proof enough for me, okay? There’s proof enough to me, so don’t give me that condescending look, please. Please, don’t do that. And please, don’t tell me to calm down as well.
Rex: I didn’t tell you to calm down.
Kate: Okay, ’cause if I want to be crazy with worry, I’m gonna be crazy with worry. And if I’m going to be frightened and panicked, that’s what I’m gonna be. And don’t try to placate me!
Rex: Okay, okay, fine. I won’t do that, and I’m sorry.
Kate: [Sighs] No, I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
[Sighs] It’s just that philip has always been so hard on himself, and victor has always made him seem like he’s a huge disappointment, and I have been complicit in all of that.
Rex: No, no, no, no, no. Mom, no–
Kate: Yes, I have, rex. I have. I have. I’ve been critical of him. And now all I can hope is that he knows how much I love him, he knows that I love him for his strength and for his resilience and–[Sighs] And the fact that I just melt– I melt when he smiles.
Roman: Hey, of course he knows that.
Kate: [Sighs] And of course he’s gonna come back to us, right? They’re gonna find him, and he’s gonna be safe and sound, and then we can all see that beautiful smile again, right?
Xander: Gwen, how can who be right downstairs?
Gwen: The–the guy, the guy at the, um– at the coffee cart down there. Yeah, the man, he wolf whistles at me. I mean, last week, he even said to me that I have a nice ass.
Xander: What? Well, he’s not wrong, but the nerve. I’m gonna sort him out right now.
Gwen: No, no, no, xander, don’t do that.
Xander: Why not?
Gwen: Because what if he– what if he phones the police? You can’t get into trouble with the law again.
Xander: I’m not gonna beat him to death. I’m just gonna make sure he understands that he can’t wolf-whistle my girl or make comments about her beautiful body.

Xander: I will. But I am a bit peckish. What do you say we head out and get a bite to eat? It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on
Chloe: Brady, hey.
Brady: Hey.
Chloe: Aren’t you supposed to be in the hospital?
Brady: I was discharged an hour ago.
Chloe: And you decided to come to work?
Brady: Well, I figured I-I had to. It’s the only way that I could–I could see you. You’re not taking my calls, chloe.
Chloe: I’m sorry I ignored your call. I was just–I went down to the police station, and I ran into kate, who totally went off on me and said that whatever’s happened to philip is my fault because I pitted you two against each other.
Brady: Okay, okay, that’s not true, obviously. Kate is angry. She’s upset. I mean, who can blame her, right?
Chloe: How are you doing with all this?
Brady: [Sighs] Well, chloe, I-I have to make a confession to you. That’s why I needed to talk to you.
Chloe: Brady?
Brady: No, no, no, not that. Not that.
Chloe: Oh, thank god. Then what?
Brady: It has to do with something belle found out this morning about my credit card. Apparently, the night that you found me, I had bought six shots of whiskey.
Melinda: “No”? Are you refusing a direct order, detectives?
Eli: Technically, we report to rafe.
Lani: And with no proof that philip kiriakis is dead, we have no probable cause to arrest brady.
Melinda: We all know it’s just a matter of time before the dive team finds philip’s body. And since mr. Black was just released from the hospital, we need to make our move before he tries to flee the jurisdiction.
Eli: Which we can’t do without hard evidence.
Melinda: We have an artificial limb that was dredged up from the river, among other things.
Lani: That doesn’t mean philip was murdered.
Melinda: I should have known the two of you wouldn’t cooperate. But, then, you are kristen dimera’s bff, so why am I surprised?
Eli: You know, lani’s just following protocol, okay?
Melinda: Yeah, you weren’t too concerned with protocol when you tried to help her escape last year, were you? I don’t know, maybe you had something to do with her van detouring on the way to statesville the other day. So don’t preach to me about protocol.
Eli: We’re just going by the book.
Melinda: Then do something useful. Check in with the divers and see if they’ve found any new evidence.
Eli: I just told you that I spoke to the divers–
Melinda: Then speak to them again! Or are you no longer in the business of solving cases?
[Tense music]
[Scoffs] God.
Kate: To tell you the truth, I just don’t understand why they don’t charge brady with suspicion of murder.
Roman: Doesn’t work that way, kate. You know that.
Kate: [Sighs]
[Cell phone rings] Hello.
Melinda: Ms. Dimera, it’s da trask.
Kate: Yes, da trask. Is this about philip?
Melinda: I’m afraid I don’t have anything new to report, but I do have something I want to discuss with you. Do you have time to stop by the station again?
Kate: Yes, yes, of course I do. I’ll come by now.
Melinda: Good. I’ll see you soon.
Kate: Yeah, see you soon.
Rex: Well, does she have news about philip?
Kate: No, no, but she wants to talk to me about the case, so I’m going to go down to the station now.
Rex: Okay, well, we can take you.
Kate: No, no, I’ll be fine. I can go alone.
Roman: Okay. You will call if you need us?
Kate: Of course I will.
Roman: All right.
[Soft holiday music playing]

Rex: Okay.
Victor: I’m done sitting around.
Maggie: Well, who are you calling?
Victor: Rafe hernandez. I figure if I can light a fire under his ass, maybe we’ll get some answers.
Maggie: [Laughs]
[Cell phone ringing]
Victor: Oh, speak of the devil.
Maggie: Is it rafe?
Victor: No, better. Melinda trask.
Maggie: Oh.
Victor: Da trask, I hope you have some good news for me.
Melinda: I’m afraid I don’t have any news. But if you have time to come by the station, I think I can make some progress on the case.
Victor: I’ll be right there.
Maggie: You’ll be where?
Victor: She wants me to come down to the station.
Maggie: Well, does she have any news about philip?
Victor: No, but she said she has a plan, and that could be a start.
Maggie: Well, I’ll go get my purse.
Victor: Maggie, if you don’t mind, I’d like to handle this alone.
Maggie: You don’t want me to go with you?
Victor: Well… I’d like for you to go to st. Luke’s and say a prayer for philip. I have a feeling that he’d listen to you rather than me.
Maggie: I can do that. I can do that, darling.
Gwen: You want–you want to go out? It’s a bit early for dinner, isn’t it?
Xander: Man cannot live by granola bars alone.
Gwen: Why don’t we order room service? You love that delicious fried chicken in here, don’t you?
Xander: Let me see. We’ve been holed up in this room all day.
Gwen: You were just out.
Xander: And I’d like to go out again, please.
Gwen: Why don’t we binge-watch “black mirror”?
Xander: Oh, again? No, thanks.
Gwen: Well, then we can catch a game, then.
Xander: A game of what?
Gwen: Don’t know. Whatever’s on?
[Stomach growls]
Xander: Do you hear that? That’s my stomach. Come on, let’s take my new credit card for a spin.
Gwen: Oh, I’m not hungry, so…
Xander: Maybe you will be after the walk. Come on, a change of scenery will do us good. And I know exactly what I want. Fish and chips at the pub. What’s this?
Gwen: Change of scenery. Will this do?
Xander: This certainly is a good start.
[Dramatic music]

Xander: Ah.
[Both laugh] That definitely took my mind off my appetite.
Gwen: Oh, wow, what a romantic thing to say.
Xander: Let me try this, then. You are beautiful and wonderful, and I can’t get enough of you.
Gwen: Oh. Where are you going?
Xander: To shower. Join me?
Gwen: In a minute.
Xander: I’ll be waiting. Oh, and don’t worry. You have given me reason to never want to leave this room again.
[Shower running]
[Tense music]
Gwen: Come on, rex, just choke down the bloody coffee and get out of there. You can’t stay in this town forever. Or can you? It’s not like I can keep xander locked away in this tiny room forever either or away from the pub’s blasted fish and chips. And then he might run into you, rex, and then what? Find out that sarah didn’t really run away with you. And then it’ll just be a hop, skip, and a jump away before xander learns that sarah’s stranded on a deserted island, and he’ll go sail the seven seas to go and find her. I won’t let that happen. I won’t lose you. I can’T. So I’ll just have to find a way to make sure that xander never finds out the truth.
Rex: I did not want to say this in front of mom, but…after finding philip’s prosthetic leg and all that blood all over brady, I just– it doesn’t look good, does it?
Roman: I have another theory.
Rex: Let’s hear it.
Roman: Philip has always been one to go his own way. So whatever may or may not have happened between him and chloe and brady, he’s also dealing with victor firing him from titan and not for the first time. So I’M… I’m thinking that had to be a huge blow. So maybe philip figured a way to disappear for a while, buy some time, clear his head, figure things out.
Rex: Or he fell into the river after brady attacked him, and he got swept away by the current.
Roman: That is certainly a possibility, but… I’m not going there yet.
Rex: I admire your faith, dad; I wish I had it. But look, I… I just think it’s doubtful that philip is going to be found alive again.
Chloe: So the night that philip disappeared, you drank six shots?
Brady: Oh, no, no, I bought them. I bought them. Belle checked my credit card receipt, and it was there in black and white. Chloe, I don’t remember buying them. I sure as hell don’t remember drinking them. That–and look, I know that doesn’t mean I didn’t do it. And I know you have your doubts about my behavior–
Chloe: Brady.
Brady: No, hey, hey, I understand. You have seen me at my worst. You were there. That is why I don’t want to hide one single damn thing from you. And that’s why I have something else I got to tell you, chloe.
[Dramatic music]
Kate: Victor.
Victor: You got a call from trask too?
Kate: So did she tell you what’s going on?
Victor: No, just that it has something to do with philip’s case.
Melinda: Good. I’m glad you’re both here.
Kate: [Sighs] Did you find philip’s body?
Melinda: As I mentioned on the phone, we’ve no new evidence since the divers recovered your son’s prosthesis. And though I’m obviously not able to arrest someone for murder based solely on an artificial limb, if I have proof of death, the man responsible could be cuffed within the hour. Which is why I need you both to sign this.

Xander: I was starting to prune waiting for you to join me.
Gwen: Mm, sorry. I got distracted.
Xander: By what?
Gwen: Okay.
[Sighs] What do you say about us getting out of salem for a bit?
Xander: Well, you know I’d love to whisk you away to the tropical paradise of our dreams, but we do still have that pesky lack-of-funds problem.
Gwen: Solved.
Xander: What, you found us a big bag of cash?
Gwen: I found us a free place to stay.
Xander: Tell me more.
Gwen: Okay. A return to the mother country.
Xander: What, britain?
Gwen: London. Okay, I have a friend there, yeah, and she’s got this amazing, huge, lovely flat with a lovely guest room, and she said that I’m welcome to come there anytime. And I have a load of miles that are about to expire, so I can get us two round-trip tickets to heathrow.
Xander: Yeah, I mean, that definitely solves the limited-funds issue. But do you really want to go to london right now? I mean, it’s not exactly balmy this time of year, is it?
Gwen: Well, it’s certainly warmer than the midwest.
Xander: Where isn’t?
Gwen: Oh, come on, xander. Come on, the city, london, is so lovely this time of year. It’s magical with borough market and the shops and the decorations and the eating hall at selfridges.
Xander: Now I’m hungry again.
Gwen: We can maybe go to a showing of “a christmas carol” at the old vic, and then we can watch fireworks together on the thames on new year’s eve?
Xander: I don’t know. We’re getting pretty good at making our own fireworks right here.
Gwen: Well, we can make our own fireworks in london, yeah? Variety being the spice of life. Come on.
Xander: Well, when you put it that way, how can I possibly say no?
Gwen: You can’T.
Victor: What the hell is this?
Melinda: As philip’s next of kin, you have the right to have him declared legally dead.
Kate: But you just said that you haven’t found his body.
Melinda: That is true. And while I know that you both have every hope that philip will be found alive, the truth is, with every minute that passes, that hope diminishes, and unfortunately, the case grows colder, and the murderer could get away. But by declaring philip dead, no matter how painful that may be, you give me the power to prosecute the man responsible.
Victor: And you believe that person to be brady?
Melinda: Every bit of evidence points to him. We have his threatening text messages on philip’s phone. He was found by the river soaked in philip’s blood next to a knife with his prints on it. And now, in that same river, philip’s prosthesis was found. If I were a betting woman, this would be an easy gamble. But like I said, without a body, it’s not enough to make an arrest. Which is why I urge you to sign that document. As soon as you declare philip dead, I can arrest the man who killed him, and you can have the justice that you deserve.
[Dramatic music]
Brady: Sit. About a week ago, I went– I went into a bar.
Chloe: You went to a bar?
Brady: I–yeah, I even ordered a drink. But I stared at it, chloe. I just looked at it. I even called maggie up to come join me to make sure I didn’t down it. She came, like she always does– bless her heart–to support me. And she thought we should go to a meeting; I agreed. And that’s when I found out that my dad was in the hospital.
Chloe: Why? I mean, what made you so upset that you felt like you needed a drink?
Brady: You.
Chloe: Me?
Brady: Yeah. You, all these feelings that I have for you that I haven’t been able to act on because you’ve been with philip. I even told maggie, out of my frustration, that I would love if philip was out of the way.
Chloe: You–you didn’t–
Brady: I didn’t–i didn’t mean it like that. I mean, I think I didn’t mean it like–like that. I’m beginning to wonder, chloe. I could never imagine taking someone’s life. I wouldn’t do anything like– I wouldn’t do that. But now I’m–I don’t know. Did I see you and go off the deep end and walk into the pub and order those shots and go down to the river? I don’t even know what I did anymore.
Chloe: Brady, don’t–
Brady: I’m–
Chloe: Don’t torture yourself over something you can’t even remember.
Brady: [Sighs] I think there’s a way I can remember, though.
Chloe: What do you mean?
Brady: I need to go back down to the river.
[ Echoing ]

Chloe: You want to go back to the river?
Brady: Yeah.
Chloe: We discussed this. It’s a terrible idea. And belle agrees with that. There’s gonna be cops there with a dive team. What are they gonna think?
Brady: I don’t care. I don’t care what they think. A man’s missing. He could be–he could be dead, chloe, I don’t–and maybe I had something to do with it. The only way I’m gonna find out is to get my memory back. It’s the only way I’m gonna get answers about this. And that means I got to go back down to that damn river and hope to god that something makes me remember what happened that night. I’m going.
Chloe: Okay, well, you’re not going alone.
Brady: I don’t want you in the middle of this.
Chloe: I already am. I’m going too.
Brady: Even if you think I might be guilty in this?
Chloe: Well, like you said, maybe–maybe there’s something down at the river that will tell us what happened that night.
Brady: Okay. All right.
[Dramatic music]
Melinda: This is a big decision, an emotional one. I’ll give you a moment to discuss it.
Kate: Thank you.
Melinda: Yeah.
Kate: Finally, some action. What are you waiting for?
Victor: She said, “take a moment to discuss.” Let’s discuss.
Kate: What’s there to discuss? We want her to go after the person who hurt our son, right?
Victor: Yes, of course. It’s–it’s just that I’m not ready. I’m not ready to accept the fact that my son is dead.
Kate: You think that I am? I’ve been desperately trying to convince myself that philip is still alive, but all of the magical thinking in the world is not gonna change the fact that…
[Somber music]
My heart is broken. I know your heart is broken too, but we still have to accept the horrible reality that philip is probably at the bottom of the river and brady is the one who put him there. I want to see him behind bars now. Oh, god, victor, because it’s brady, right? Family? Grandson? How many times did brady turn his back on you? Do I have to remind you of that? Do I have to remind you that he was more than willing to let kristen get away with nearly killing you? Now you’re willing to let him get away with murdering our son? Brady doesn’t deserve your loyalty. Philip does. So stop regretting what you can’t change and sign the damn paper!
[Tense music]
Melinda: Detectives.
Lani: Before you ask, we talked to the dive team. They still haven’t found a body or anything else.
Melinda: No harm in being thorough.
Eli: Well, if you don’t mind, we have other leads we need to follow.
Melinda: Any as promising as brady black? I’ll take that as a no.
Lani: Is there any new information?
Melinda: Why don’t you stick around? Depending on what’s happening in that room, I might have something for you to do.
This is the sound of nature breathing.
Rex: No one understands mom better than you, dad. Which is why I’m so happy that you two are back together again, especially now.
Roman: Well, you are there for her too, son, and I am grateful for that, as is she. As she said, we’re both very glad to have you home. Refill?
Rex: No, I’m kind of coffee’d out.
Roman: Okay.
Rex: Thanks.
Roman: Tell you what. Why don’t we go back to the pub, wait for your mom there? I’m sure I can rustle up a couple of bowls of chowder.
Rex: [Laughs] Now, yes, that sounds good. I just–I want to know what trask is about to tell mom.
Roman: Yeah.
Rex: Let’s go.
[Zipper scratching]
Xander: And we are packed. In record time.
Gwen: Yeah, if we leave now, we’ll make it just in time for our flight.
Xander: You coming?
Gwen: [Clears throat] Yeah, sorry, I was just checking to see if the coffee guy was still there.
Xander: Well, is he? I could still give him a piece of my mind.
Gwen: Not that I don’t appreciate your chivalry, but his shift must have ended. So yes, he’s gone.
Xander: So what are we waiting for?
Gwen: [Sighs] Absolutely nothing.
Xander: [Chuckles] Come on.
Gwen: Right.
[Both chuckle]
[Tense music]
Chloe: [Sighs]
Brady: Is it–this is where you found me?
Chloe: Yeah. Right here. You were lying right here, and you were covered in blood, and there was a knife lying right there. You don’t remember me finding you here?
Brady: I don’t, no.
Chloe: And you don’t remember why you came down to the river and what happened once you were down here?
Brady: Philip!
Chloe: Brady, what’s going on? Hey, are you remembering something?

Xander: Yeah, I’m impressed with us, how quickly we packed.
Gwen: Yeah, well, whatever we forgot, we can always get there, right? Marks and sparks has good bargains.
Xander: Yeah.
Rex: Whoa.
Xander: Rex brady?
[Tense music]
Maggie: Oh, you’re home. Hi, darling. You got back sooner than I thought. Although I suppose I-I took a little longer than I expected. I said two rosaries for philip.
Victor: Maybe I should’ve had you say one for me as well.
[Dramatic music]
Maggie: Victor, what happened at the police station?
Kate: Hey.
Roman: So there you are. What–what happened with trask?
Kate: Well, she wanted victor and I to have philip declared legally dead.
Roman: What?
Kate: Yeah, she said it was the only way she was going to be able to arrest brady for his murder. Of course, victor was his usual stubborn self.
Victor: Kate wanted me to sign the paper so that trask could use it to go after brady. Now, I want justice for my son, but signing away my grandson’s life to get it?
Roman: So what happened? Did victor sign or not?
Maggie: Victor, what did you do?
Victor: God forgive me. I signed the damn paper.
Chloe: Brady, what is it? Do you remember something?
Brady: Philip, your hands off me. Yeah, I do. It’s fuzzy, but it’s right there. It’s right there.
Chloe: Okay, what? What is right there?
Brady: Oh, god, chloe, I was–
Melinda: Mr. Black, returning to the scene of the crime? Thanks for staying in plain view of our divers. Made tracking you down very easy.
Brady: What are you talking about?
Chloe: What’s going on here?
Melinda: Justice. Brady black, you’re under arrest for the murder of philip kiriakis.
Chloe: No, you can’t do that.
Brady: You’re arresting me?
Melinda: Oh, I sure can. Detective.
Eli: Sorry, man. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided for you.
Kate: I mean, it’s not like I want to believe that philip’s dead. It’s just that I had to do it to move the investigation forward.
Roman: You did what you thought was the right thing to do.
Kate: Yeah. Well, at least I don’t feel so helpless anymore.
Roman: Yeah. Well, tell you what. Why don’t you take a break? You still haven’t eaten. Now, you want me to bring you up something?
Kate: [Sighs] No, I-I just want to be alone.
Roman: Okay. Well, you know where I am if you need me.
Kate: I do.
Roman: Okay.
