BLACK FILMMAKERS RECLAIM 8:46 BY GIVING LIFE TO THE VAST RICHNESS OF THE BLACK EXPERIENCE ON SCREEN
National Distribution of Tribeca Festival Films Advance Black Stories from Black Storytellers
Originally debuted at the Tribeca Festival, four new 8:46 Films are the latest installment of P&G’s Widen The Screen initiative, an effort to improve the portrayal of Black life on screen and expand inclusion efforts for Black creators behind the camera, to challenge expectations and remove limiting stereotypes in film, advertising and media.
8:46 Films is a collaboration with SATURDAY MORNING, a collective of Black creative executives, Tribeca Studios and P&G. Four inspirational stories told in the length of time it took to take George Floyd’s life – and accelerate a movement that would change the world. Filmmakers Zoey Martinson, Camrus Johnson, Gibrey Allen and Marshall Tyler were inspired to take 8 minutes and 46 seconds instead to tell stories of joy, love, and resilience, fuel the creativity that has always upheld the Black community in the darkest times, and build a legacy of hope. Airing Wednesday, September 1 (10:00 PM) on CBS. FOR THE FIRST TIME TOGETHER, THE CHILDREN OF ACCUSED CHILD MURDERER CHAD DAYBELL DEFEND THEIR FATHER IN “48 HOURS: THE SECRETS OF CHAD DAYBELL’S BACKYARD” Preview
Daughter Emma Murray Tells Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti: “He Was Framed”
Chad Daybell and his wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, have been charged with murdering her children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, then burying them on Daybell’s property just outside of Rexburg, Idaho. Now, in their first television interview together, Chad Daybell’s children defend their dad in an all-new 48 HOURS, “The Secrets of Chad Daybell’s Backyard,” to be broadcast Wednesday, Sept. 1 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount +.
“My father needs someone to be a voice for him,” Emma Murray tells correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti. “To let people know what’s real, what we know.”
The disappearance of JJ and Tylee gripped the nation. First, police said the children disappeared in September 2019, shortly after the family moved to Rexburg, Idaho, from Arizona. Investigators say Tylee was last seen in Yellowstone National Park with her family on Sept. 8, 2019. Investigators say JJ vanished on Sept. 23, 2019. Throughout, Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell refused to talk with investigators or say where the children were. Then, in June 2020, the bodies of JJ and Tylee were found in shallow graves on Chad Daybell’s property.
Chad Daybell has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. Lori Vallow Daybell has been found incompetent to stand trial and proceedings against her have been suspended. She has not yet entered a plea to these charges.
Asked whether Chad Daybell played any role in the murders of JJ and Tylee, his children say no.
“It’s completely unthinkable,” says Leah Murphy.
The investigation into the disappearance and murders of JJ and Tylee opens up a bizarre tale of twisted relationships; the changing personality of the mom; hints of doomsday beliefs; eyewitness accounts that Lori Vallow Daybell believed JJ had become a zombie; talks of cults; and the suspicious deaths of two ex-spouses.
Prosecutors say law enforcement was led to search Daybell’s property because cellphone data from Alex Cox’s phone put him there for two hours the day after Tylee was last seen. Cox is Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother.
Mark, Leah, Seth, Garth and Emma tell Vigliotti they’re speaking out together for the first time because the public has only heard one side of the story. They want to tell his story, how they believe JJ and Tylee’s remains ended up in their father’s backyard, and why they believe he did not do it. They believe he was lured into a web of murder and deceit.
“He was framed,” says Emma Murray. “This is his property. If there’s bodies buried here, it would be attributed to him.”
“Who framed your father?” Vigliotti asks.
“I think it’s pretty clear it was Lori and Alex,” Emma Murray says. “Alex came … and left for periods of time. …We don’t know… what exactly he was doing.”
Murray believes her father was fooled by Vallow and Cox in the “most deadly way possible.”
Murray walks with Vigliotti along the property where the bodies were found and recalls the day their father was arrested. Investigators found Tylee’s body in the pet cemetery, near where Cox’s phone data placed him. JJ’s remains were found about 50 yards away in a shallow grave.
“If he didn’t kill them, then why were their bodies found in your father’s backyard?” Vigliotti asks.
“I don’t know why they would be there,” Emma Murray says. “But I do know that if he were to commit a crime, he wouldn’t be foolish enough to put the evidence in his own backyard.”
That the children were buried in shallow graves, Daybell’s kids say, points a finger away from their dad, who worked as a gravedigger.
“He knew how to dig graves and – that just doesn’t sound believable to me,” says Seth Daybell.
The siblings also say there was never any talk of zombies or cults in their family.
“He never said a thing to us about zombies,” Garth Daybell says. “The first we ever heard of it was in a news report.”
48 HOURS and Vigliotti explore the lives of Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell, what happened to JJ and Tylee, and the investigation into their murders. 48 HOURS: “The Secrets of Chad Daybell’s Backyard” is produced by Liza Finley. Greg Fisher is the development producer. Ruth Chenetz and Richard Fetzer are producers. Mead Stone is the producer-editor. 9:00 PM – 48 HOURS: “The Suspicious Death of Christian Andreacchio” – Correspondent Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigate the death of Christian Andreacchio, a young Mississippi man, and new information uncovered by 48 HOURS that gave his family hope in their search for justice, in an encore of “The Suspicious Death of Christian Andreacchio” to be broadcast Saturday, Sept. 4 (9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streamed on. Paramount+. Police say he was found shot dead in the bathroom of his apartment in Meridian, Miss., by his live-in girlfriend, Whitley Goodman, and his friend Dylan Swearingen on Feb. 26, 2014. Swearingen told police Andreacchio was acting erratically before he died. According to a police report, Swearingen said Andreacchio threatened to shoot himself, telling Goodman to tell him that she loved him, before Swearingen intervened and took the gun from him. Swearingen told police he later gave the gun back after Andreacchio calmed down. Investigators ruled his death a suicide. However, his family didn’t believe he would take his own life. A grand jury heard the case in 2017 and did not indict Goodman and Swearingen. Their mothers tell Peter Van Sant their children are innocent. In reporting the story, the 48 HOURS team discovered a key report in the case was not presented to the grand jury in 2017. When told of the discovery by 48 HOURS, prosecutor Kassie Coleman said she was willing to reconvene a grand jury. Coleman acknowledges the Andreacchio family doesn’t trust her to present the case. A request to find a new prosecutor is pending in court. PREVIEW
10:00 PM – 48 HOURS: “The Tara Grinstead Mystery” – 48 HOURS and Peter Van Sant investigate the disappearance of Tara Grinstead, a Georgia teacher and former beauty queen who seemingly vanished overnight in October 2005, in an encore of “The Tara Grinstead Mystery” to be broadcast Saturday, Sept. 4 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount+. The 48 HOURS report details how the small town of Ocilla, Ga., has been consumed with suspicion and theories about the disappearance of Grinstead. On the morning of Oct. 22, 2005, Grinstead helped some teens prepare for a local beauty pageant. She later went to a cookout and was last seen heading home. For years the case was a mystery – even when people who said they knew something began to talk. Nearly 12 years would pass after Grinstead’s disappearance before the case was broken open by a surprising confession – but recent revelations indicate local law enforcement and state investigators may have had information that could have solved the case soon after she vanished. John McCullough, who maintains he tried to get investigators a key tip in 2007 that could have cracked the case, speaks out on television for the first time on 48 HOURS. Now, Grinstead’s friends and family may learn what really happened to her. PREVIEW
