Mariah: Okay, bowie. Pain that I felt earlier wasn’t necessarily a contraction. Probably just pulled something working out. Trying to be healthy, ’cause i haven’t felt anything —
[ Gasps ] Oh!
[ Breathing heavily ]
Devon: So, rey’s trying to find out if there’s surveillance cameras at the convenience store?
Abby: If we could get footage of the man that stitch saw buying a truckload of those protein bars that mariah likes, I mean, that could be a concrete lead.
Tessa: The footage would also confirm that the guy’s shopping list was written on the yellow notepad with the storks on it that I bought mariah.
Abby: I just wish that rey would call. This is torture.
Tessa: You’d think he would be moving pretty quickly now that we have something worth pursuing.
Abby: Maybe you should call him.
Sharon: Oh, I have no doubt that rey is doing everything he can. He just — you know, he has to run everything by paul first, and it takes a little bit of time to get permission to view private video footage.
Devon: Yeah. No, we all just need to be patient, so…
Abby: I’m trying, and I am trying to stay positive. You know, we’re just lucky that stitch spotted this guy in the first place.
Devon: Yeah, yeah, no, we’re lucky you were paying attention. Where’d you say that shop was?
Stitch: Fourth street and willow lane.
Devon: Fourth and willow? You said you were staying at the gcac before you went back to iowa city, right?
Stitch: Yeah, I was.
Devon: So what were you doing in that part of town?
Gloria: I do appreciate you agreeing to a follow-up after our last get-together. In retrospect, I realized I may have been a smidge aggressive.
Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Maybe just a tad.
Gloria: I know, but my enthusiasm got the best of me.
Kevin: Hello.
Lauren: Oh, hi.
Chloe: Hi.
Gloria: Oh, hello, angels. Listen, we are in the middle of a business meeting, so if you two could move along.
Chloe: Oh, well, we actually have a table for two in mind, so don’t worry.
Kevin: Enjoy your lunch. Good luck. Geez.
Chloe: I wonder what that was all about.
Kevin: Michael told me gloria is giving lauren the hard sell to promote her. She wants to take over as the head of jcv.
Chloe: Oh, you got to give it to gloria. She has chutzpah. Now it all makes sense.
Kevin: What? What does?
Chloe: Well, she was fawning all over sally the other day, trying to pump her for info about the company’s young demographic.
Kevin: Poor lauren. Should we go back and save her?
Chloe: [ Chuckles ] No, gloria told us to run along. We should keep running.
Kevin: Okay. [ Laughs ]
Gloria: All I’m asking is that you listen to what I have to offer jcv with an open mind.
Lauren: I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t willing to hear you out. So let’s get to it. You say you’re the best candidate for the job, so stop telling me and start convincing me.
Phyllis: Okay, I got your text that you’re back from milan, but I just wanted to personally check in with you. So —
Jack: You will be happy to know I fulfilled my duties as your messenger. Summer loved the gift you sent her.
Phyllis: Thank you for doing that for me. Summer texted me and said the visit was amazing. So, okay, I want your take on the whole summer-kyle thing. How are they doing and how are they doing with harrison?
Jack: It appears our kids are doing splendidly. They have made harrison feel at home. Kyle and I have worked out the logistics of him co-running jabot from europe, and summer is just shining at marchetti.
Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Great.
Jack: Want to try that again and maybe say it like you mean it?
Nick: I got here as fast as i could. Do you have some news to tell me and mom?
Victor: I do indeed. But before I get into that, i want you to know that I’m further investigating what happened to mariah. No update yet, but as soon as there is, I will let you know.
Nick: I really appreciate that. Sharon is worried sick. I mean, everyone is.
Nikki: We’re doing everything we can to make sure she gets home safe.
Nick: Well, just keep me posted, alright?
Victor: I shall do that.
Nick: Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?
Victor: In our investigation of ashland locke’s past, we may have come up with something that’s potentially very interesting.
Ashland: Is that right? Well, I was prepared for this to happen at some point. I appreciate you telling me. I’ll deal with it.
Victoria: That didn’t sound very good. What exactly do you have to deal with? Psoriatic arthritis, made my joints stiff,

Phyllis: Of course I’m happy for summer and kyle and sweet little harrison. Of course I am. I just want them to be in love and happy here in genoa city. Why can’t they be happy at home?
Jack: You know why. Because summer has a wonderful job that she loves.
Phyllis: I know. You’re saying all the things that I should feel, that I’m thrilled. But I’m being selfish, that’s all. And you know what? I saw melancholy behind that pleasant demeanor. I saw it in your eyes when you were taking harrison to italy. I mean, I know that family’s important to you. Why can’t you just admit that this is a loss for you?
Jack: It’s not a loss. Kyle and harrison are hours away. I can fly there anytime.
Phyllis: But it’s not like having kyle here with you every single day and having harrison here at the house. It’s not the same. You know, I miss my daughter walking into the grand phoenix and, you know, just grabbing a bite and…
[ Sighs ] Why can’t you admit that this is hard for you?
Jack: Okay, I give. It’s a lot harder than i admitted.
Phyllis: Thank you.
Jack: But we’re not gonna sit around here and wallow.
Phyllis: Why not? I want mutual wallowing.
Jack: Absolutely not. No. No, come with me. Come on.
Gloria: I have been studying the market. Yes, I have. And I know where this industry is going. Now, if you were to give me this job, I will anticipate trends and beat all the other companies to the punch. Now, wait, I am not saying that I will be reckless. No going rogue here. What I’m saying is I will make intelligent decisions followed by quick and efficient action. Lauren, I do want to carry on the work that summer started and even sally, what she carried forward in her brief tenure.
Lauren: Do you think you understand the targeted demographic, though?
Gloria: Absolutely. I’ve done my research. The women we are going after are young, ambitious, and they want — no, they demand work-life balance. And they care about the world around them. So our clothes will be socially conscious and environmentally friendly, just the way they are. Now, as I said before, I will use inclusive marketing strategies.
Lauren: You’ve really done your homework.
Gloria: And I can make your vision of this brand happen if you will only give me the opportunity to do so.
Lauren: I’ll admit, I’m impressed.
Gloria: Does that mean we can celebrate now?
Lauren: No, it does not. Not so fast. Because this interview is not over yet.
Chloe: Wow. Gloria is not holding back. Lauren is not going to make it easy for her.
Kevin: They are two forces of nature.
[ Cellphone chimes ]
Chloe: Oh, is that an update on mariah?
Kevin: No. No news yet.
Chloe: [ Sighs ] I’m sorry. She is a total badass. Whatever has happened to her, she can handle it.
Kevin: I hope so. For her and for the baby.
Stitch: That market was out of my way. I had never been there before.
Sharon: Then why did you happen to go in?
Stitch: Remember how we went to chancellor park before I took off for iowa?
Abby: Yeah, we went and looked at an apartment for you. We had a good talk. I was in my head because I was worried about mariah.
Stitch: After we parted ways, I was feeling kind of nostalgic, so I went for a walk. I ended up by that pond we used to go to together on the other side of the park.
Abby: I know the one you mean.
Stitch: Well, the time got away from me. By the time I finally hit the road, I wanted to grab some snacks for the ride, so i stopped by the convenience store on the way out of town.
Devon: Mm. At the exact same time the guy was there, too.
Stitch: Not exactly. He came in after I did.
Devon: Still pretty lucky, though.
Stitch: Not lucky enough. I wish I could’ve put things together back then. We would’ve had a lead a lot sooner.
Tessa: Well, we have one now.
Abby: Thanks to you, rey is finally on a path that could lead us to mariah. For people who could use a lift
Tessa: [ Sighs ] I am too restless just sitting here. I’m going to get a drink.
Sharon: I’ll go with you.
Devon: Listen, I’m not gonna go anywhere until we hear back from rey, but I do have some business calls to return.
Abby: Yeah, well, you can use the library or the study if you need.
Devon: Okay, thank you.
Stitch: You sure you don’t want anything from the kitchen?
Abby: No, no. Thank you, though.
Stitch: I couldn’t tell how you felt when I mentioned that i took a little sentimental detour by our pond. I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable.
Lauren: So can you pinpoint any area of jcv that could be improved upon?
Gloria: Yes, I can. Certainly. Not every division is perfect, and again, that is why strong leadership is so important. One of the first things I would focus on is our accessories. I would like to find a fashion-forward designer who could come up with statement necklaces, bold, bright pieces that really draw the eye. The way I see it, when you’re a young woman just starting out, you may not have the money to buy the entire jcv ensemble, but you can afford a piece of jewelry that will make your outfit pop. You agree with me?
Lauren: Yes. Yes, I do.
Gloria: Of course you do.
[ Chuckles ] Because I know my stuff.
Lauren: It’s a good idea. And I can’t tell you how many candidates were tripped up by that question.
Gloria: [ Chuckles ] Lauren, I have so many more ideas where that came from. No one wants this more or will work harder for you.
Lauren: Alright. Alright, let’s try it on a temporary basis. Okay? Let’s try some of your ideas, see what happens.
Gloria: Oh, thank you. Thank you.
[ Laughs ] Thank you for realizing I am the best person for the job. Oh, lauren, this is so exciting. I am thrilled. Now, I am going to go back to the office and make sure my assistant duties are covered, and then I will dive right in as interim president of jcv. My, doesn’t that have a lovely ring to it.
[ Both laugh ]
Ashland: That call was from a guy that used to work for me at one of my first news stations. He’s been retired. He hasn’t been in the business for years, but he’s suddenly getting these calls inquiring about me, including one from a reporter who managed to track him down.
Victoria: Well, probably at billy’s request. Just another chanccomm article.
Ashland: Yeah, I was thinking that, as well. Maybe newman media doing some digging.
Victoria: I’m sure that adam is hungry to grab some headlines. I mean, he — he would do at his board members’ expense. He told me that his company is launching in a few days and i wouldn’t be able to miss it.
Ashland: So he has a strong motive, as well.
Victoria: And then there’s my father, of course.
Ashland: Trying to protect his daughter. Victor gave us his word and his blessing that he was behind us, but he still could be doing his due diligence.
Victoria: Well, whoever it is, you seem to be taking it in stride.
Ashland: Well, I’ve gotten used to people being overly interested in my life. What would really be bothersome is if you heard information about me from someone else, because if there’s anything that you need to know about my life, I’d like to be the one to tell you.
Victoria: Well, um, okay. I’m ready and willing to listen.
Ashland: Well, there is a reason that the guy got a call from a reporter who I just talked to. When I was young, years ago, just starting out, I worked for this older woman who took me under her wing and she mentored me in the media world. Her husband owned two news stations, and after he passed away, she was the one who kind of took charge. And years later, when she died, I bought the two stations from her. And that’s what began my media empire.
Victoria: Okay. Well, thank you. I appreciate you telling me the truth.
Nikki: So, ashland was mentored by this woman, and after she died, he bought the news stations she owned?
Victor: Exactly. And that was his first big move in the business world, alright? And those tv stations he bought from her are the foundations of his company.
Nick: Well, I was concerned there was some deep, dark secrets about ashland, but this doesn’t seem too suspicious.
Nikki: No, I don’t think so either.
Victor: That’s not the whole story. There’s no one around who knows much about their relationship anymore, but the people we approached were most reluctant to talk about the relationship between ashland and that woman.
Nick: Well, it sounds like a non-issue to me. Obviously, ashland didn’t work too hard to keep this covered up or your pi wouldn’t have found it so easily. Ashland working with this woman and then buying those stations, that’s probably public knowledge.
Nikki: Exactly. And it’s not a crime to be an ambitious businessman. I think we should just accept that victoria has found a man who has no skeletons in his closet worth finding.
Victor: Well, sweetheart, if upon further investigation, we find out nothing, then I agree with you.
Nikki: It’s almost like you’re hoping to find something. Is that what this is? You want to destroy victoria’s marriage?
Mariah: Okay, bowie. Braxton hicks contractions are like practice contractions for a woman’s body to get them ready for the real ones when they’re about to give birth. And these — these better be braxton hicks contractions because you are not ready to make your grand entrance, okay? It’s too soon. It is way, way too soon. You can’t be born yet, alright? Okay, good. Good, I’m glad we agree on that.
Abby: You didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. I mean, why would that make me upset? I used to love going to that pond and feeding those ducks.
Stitch: Well, it’s still beautiful. Plenty of ducks looking for a friendly hand-out. I hope you take your son there one day when he’s old enough. Ah, I’m — I’m sorry. It’S…
Abby: It’s okay. No, I am gonna take him there all the time.
Stitch: You will. And you can make all kinds of incredible memories with your boy.
Abby: Thank you for being so supportive. That’s exactly what I needed to hear. You’re a really great friend.
Stitch: Friendship is a two-way street. It’s meant so much to me reconnecting like this.
Abby: Me, too.
Stitch: Listen, um, I’d love to wait here with you for rey to call, but I have to check in with max’s care team.
Abby: Right, yeah. I understand.
Stitch: You sure you’re gonna be okay?
Abby: Yeah, yeah, I have a great support team. I promise I’m gonna keep it together. In fact, I’m gonna go check on them in the kitchen.
Stitch: Okay. I’ll call and check in on you later, okay?
Abby: Yeah.
Devon: Taking off already?
Devon: Yeah. Um, can I talk to you for a second?
Devon: Sure.
Stitch: You have my number, right?
Devon: I do, yeah.
Stitch: Please call me if abby needs me.
Devon: You got it.
Chloe: Yeah, I should have.
Lauren: Well, not that gloria has hurried off, I thought i would share some news.
Kevin: We already know.
Lauren: Ah.
Chloe: Yeah, I was listening. Sorry, not sorry.
[ Laughter ]
Lauren: So, do you think I’m crazy for hiring her?
Chloe: No, actually, I think it’s a great idea. I mean, I think she said some great things, and I’m beginning to think that maybe this interim gig might become more permanent.
Kevin: I just hope she can do her job without driving you crazy.
Lauren: [ Laughs ] That is why it’s going to be currently temporary. And, you know, it takes some time to commit, you know. Learned that the hard way with sally.
Chloe: Uh-oh.
Lauren: Yeah, wish you would consider that before you hired her.
Chloe: Can we agree just to disagree?
Lauren: Look, I’m concerned, chloe. I really wanted it to work with sally at jcv, and then she showed her true colors. And I’m just afraid that you’ve made the same mistake that i did.
Chloe: I appreciate the warning, I really do, but I went into this with my eyes wide open. And I know sally and her ambitions have caused her to make some really unwise choices, but haven’t we all been there?
Lauren: What she did goes way beyond an error in judgment.
Chloe: Then I think she’s gonna fit in great with my team. I mean, look at chelsea. She’s a grifter. Look at me. I mean, I basically went off the deep end after I lost my daughter. But we’ve grown and we’ve changed, and I sense a real kindred spirit with sally, someone who is dying to put her talent to use, and I think she’s really just trying to move her life forward. Don’t you think she deserves that chance?
Lauren: You know, yes, in principle. But I don’t think she’s gonna change.
Jack: Hey. Hey! Let’s do this without phones. Come on, silence it. Just silence it. There, we’ll soak up the sun. Talk over our iced coffee. Without focusing on the fact that we’re not with our kids. We can plan a trip to visit them, make a regular thing of it.
Phyllis: You know what? I have an idea. Why doesn’t jabot buy marchetti and move the offices here?
Jack: Why didn’t I think of that? It’s feasible.
Phyllis: I’m just throwing it out there.
Jack: Jabot’s got millions lying around. Why not just snap it right up?
Phyllis: See, I come up with all the good ideas.
[ Both laugh ] It’s nice to see you laugh.
Jack: It’s nice to laugh. How about you? You doing any better?
Phyllis: I’m okay, thanks.
“The young and the restless”
will continue.
Phyllis: We have company.
Sally: Wow, seems as if you guys are joined at the hip lately. How nice for the two of you.
Phyllis: Well, I’m spending time with a friend. You know, the definition of a friend is someone you care about and someone you trust that feels the same way about you. I’m sure it’s a foreign concept, but you should maybe wrap your head around that.
Sally: Oh, you think you’re trustworthy?
Jack: Okay, we’re not doing this. Sally, it’s nice to see you. If you’re just passing through, I suggest you move along.
Victor: Let’s put this to rest, okay? I’m not interested in ruining the relationship between ashland and victoria. I’m happy for her. I want her to be happy. He’s a good man, and I think he’s good for her. Having said that, I don’t want her to go into the marriage blindly, not knowing what the hell this man is all about. If my investigation turns up nothing, then good, then we can enjoy wonderful wedding in tuscany. I mean, imagine that. In tuscany in october, that’s absolutely beautiful. And then we can actually offer our good wishes in an honest way.
Nick: I’m wondering if we should keep digging. I talked to phyllis about this, and she said that if we keep meddling, it could backfire. Now, I realize the irony in that. It contradicts everything I was saying earlier.
Victor: Exactly.
Nick: My first instinct was to dig into ashland’s past, see what we could find out. But then I asked myself, “what right do I have — what right do any of us have — to question victoria’s choices?” Are we just begging for trouble?
Nikki: I think that we are. That’s been the point I’ve been trying to make all this time. I mean, what is the worst-case scenario? That ashland unfortunately dies too soon.
Victor: Sweetheart, I just want victoria to be happy, okay? I don’t want to find out before she gets married there’s something very dark in ashland’s past, that’s all.
Nikki: Well, you know what? If there is something dark from his past, that was then, this is now. What’s important is the man he is today. That’s who victoria is marrying.
Victoria: I have to ask. Did you have a more personal relationship with this woman who mentored you?
Ashland: It’s natural to wonder about that, but the answer is no. No, she was lovely. Bright and fun to be with, but it wasn’t anything like that. It was nothing like this.
Victoria: I’m not looking for reassurance and I’m certainly not threatened by something that took place decades ago. You have nothing to be ashamed of. I’m just simply interested in the path that you took to become the man that you are now.
Ashland: Well, I want to tell you everything. And I am so glad that you will be by my side for this next chapter of my life, wherever that takes us.
Abby: Oh, rey, thank god you’re here.
Tessa: Please tell us that you made some headway with the convenience store.
Rey: The store has surveillance footage. I’m just waiting on a warrant to obtain it.
Sharon: I told them that it might take some time.
Tessa: I’m trying, but this is excruciating.
Rey: I understand, but the good news is, is that I got the okay from chief williams to set up ongoing surveillance at the store. I have someone staking it out now just in case the guy that stitch crossed paths with returns. I also have another cop ready to review all the traffic camera footage from the area, so if this guy shows up on one of those cameras, we can at least track him to wherever he went after he left the store that day.
Sharon: You mean to wherever mariah’s being held against her will.
Rey: Or at least see what kind of car he was driving so we can run the plates.
Abby: That is great news. Thank you so much.
Rey: I wanted to tell you all what I knew in person, but now i got to get back to work.
Devon: Well, I really do hope your investigation pans out.
Tessa: And soon, because i don’t know how much more of this we can take.
Rey: I promise I’m not gonna give up until mariah’s found.
Phyllis: I apologize. I apologize for letting my emotion get the better of me. She brings out the worst in me. I’m sorry, you don’t need to be in the middle.
Jack: Thank you for the apology. I appreciate the sentiment. I just wish we could all move on to some semblance of civility, you know, rise above our baser instincts, refrain from the knee-jerk reactions. You — you think you could even do that? Honest answers only.
Phyllis: I mean, I’ll try not to let her get to me. Is that good enough?
Jack: That’s good enough for now.
Phyllis: Okay. Well, how about another iced coffee? It’s on me.
Jack: Well, if you’re buying.
Phyllis: [ Laughs ]
Nick: Hey, phyllis, it’s me. I picked up some of your favorites from the coffee house. I’m hoping we can have some lunch together. Call me back. Alright.
Sally: Phyllis isn’t free.
Nick: Excuse me?
Sally: Your girlfriend’s tied up at the moment.
Nick: And you know this how?
Sally: I just ran into her. She’s where she always is lately — with jack.
Kevin: You’ve been a little off since you spoke to lauren.
Chloe: Have I?
Kevin: Yeah, you didn’t order dessert.
Chloe: Yeah, I guess that is weird.
Kevin: What is it? Did she get into your head? Are you having some doubts about sally?
Chloe: I’m having a lot of doubts about a lot of people, including myself. I mean, what was I thinking? That I could stop sally from going to the dark side like I’m some paragon of virtue? And, I mean, look at chelsea. I mean, I love her, but, please, don’t even get me started on adam. I just — I mean, really, what was I thinking? That the three of us could be the positive, guiding forces in sally’s life? And with our combined rap sheets? I mean, come on, we’re like the legions of doom.
Kevin: Well, adam is a super villain, but you’re a different story. And you’re not giving yourself enough credit. Despite everything that’s happened in your past — and my own colorful history — look at us now — two upstanding citizens with thriving careers.
Chloe: We have come a long way, haven’t we?
Kevin: Most people — not named adam newman — are capable of change. And if you think sally is, then go with that. Also, screwing up in your personal life isn’t the same as screwing up at the office. And if she was good at her job at fenmore’s, she’ll be good at her job at newman media.
Chloe: You are so right. Professional lives and personal lives are totally separate entities. And sally even told that she was trying to forget seeking revenge on phyllis and that she was putting all of her energy into her work, and I really believe her.
[ Cellphone chimes ]
Kevin: Rey needs my help. He’s got a lead on mariah.
Chloe: Oh, my god. Bring her home!
Kevin: Yeah, that’s the plan.
Chloe: [ Sighs ]
Abby: When rey gets his hands on that surveillance footage, we could find out all sorts of information.
Tessa: It’s definitely something to hold onto, but it makes the anticipation so much worse.
Sharon: We could be getting closer to finding mariah, but she still seems so far away. Would you mind if I went up to your and mariah’s room? I just — I want to be near her things and feel her close to me.
Tessa: I think that’s a wonderful idea.
Abby: You’ve been quiet.
Devon: Yeah. Hey, what do you make of stitch’s story about finding that old man buying those protein bars that mariah likes and having the same notepad that tessa bought her?
Abby: I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking. Wait, you don’t believe that ben’s telling the truth?
Victor: Sweetheart, what brings you by?
Victoria: I will give you one guess.
Victor: What, the locke/newman merger? I mean, that has certainly garnered a lot of press.
Victoria: I’m actually here about something more personal.
Victor: You’re upset about something. What is it?
Victoria: Did you start an investigation into ashland’s past?
Victor: Would that surprise you?
Victoria: [ Sighs ] Ashland has nothing to hide.
Victor: Well, I hope you’re right.
Victoria: You and I have gotten to a very good place, and I hope that doesn’t have to change. Dad, please leave this alone.
Mariah: [ Groaning ]
[ Breathing heavily ] Oh, god. Okay. Ohh. It’s over. Oh! Ohh.
[ Breathing heavily ] Hey! If these are real contractions, I need to be in a hospital. Okay? I need a doctor. Please, please help! Why are you doing this to us? Why would you do this to a pregnant woman and her unborn child?! Please! What are you going to do to us?! Oh, god.
[ Breathing heavily ]
Rey: Here’s the footage from the convenience store.
Kevin: Oh, I hope this is the break we need. We’ve got to find the son of a bitch who took mariah.
Rey: Allegedly took her. But, yeah, I want to nail the guy, too. Fortunately, we don’t have to go through all the video, since stitch narrowed it down to the time frame.
Kevin: And we know who we’re looking for — stitch. Once we find him on camera, we track his movement through the store and he’ll lead us straight to the man we’re after.
Abby: I don’t understand why you have doubts about ben. I mean, why would he make something like that up?
Devon: I’m not saying that he did.
Abby: But you’re suspicious?
Devon: Yeah, I am. It’s hard to explain. It’s just a feeling that I have. Doesn’t — doesn’t seem like it’s right.
Abby: I just — I can’t believe that anything strange is going on.
Devon: I know, and listen, the last thing I want to do is cause you even more stress right now, but I got to tell you how I’m feeling because I care about yoU. Alright? I think that we can all agree that stitch’s story is pretty coincidental, to say the least. And, you know, him showing up out of the blue like he did at this point in your life, it’s also a bit odd. And then he kept delaying his departure and showing up to see you, and then the man comes back to town without having a job. Why do you think he did that?
Abby: He said he wanted to check on me because of what’s going on with mariah.
Devon: Right. That’s another thing. I would say he’s gone out of his way to be a shoulder for you to lean on while your husband’s gone. And I just can’t help but wonder if he might be trying to get close to you or maybe even rekindle what you guys had by taking advantage of your pain and your fear right now.
