Stitch: I am so sorry to hear that mariah hasn’t come home yet.

Tessa: Thanks. We’re all pretty worried right now.

Stitch: I wish I had gotten back sooner. Uh, I expected a shorter stay in iowa. It’s just there was an issue at the hospital with max. I had to be there with him.

Abby: Oh, no, is he okay?

Stitch: He’s stabilized now. This thing with mariah, do you at least know where she is. What’s she saying about why she hasn’t come home yet? Has she stopped communicating altogether?

Tessa: Well, someone’s been communicating with us, but we’re not sure it’s mariah.

Denise: It’s good to see you again.

Devon: You too.

Denise: You know, I’ve been following the sutton ames case in the press. I hope he’s finally gonna be held accountable.

Devon: Oh, me too, me too. And I have to say that you deserve a lot of credit because, without your investigation, we never would’ve learned the real reason that he went after amanda’s father. So thank you.

Denise: Well, I am glad to do my part, but I’ve turned over all my case files to the da’s office, if that’s what you wanted to discuss.

Devon: No. No, no, no. Actually, I — I want to talk to you about something completely different, and I’m gonna start off by saying that I realize you’re retired. But I was just hoping that once you hear the circumstances that you’d be willing to look into something for me.

Denise: Tell me why you need an investigator.

Devon: My close friend has gone missing, and at first, her friends and family, we just thought she left town of her own free will and just needed to, you know, get some space and time away, but recently, we’ve started to doubt that.

Denise: Uh, any reasons why?

Devon: Well, for one, we haven’t heard her voice in quite some time ’cause she’s only been communicating to us through text message, and there’s extra cause for concern because she’s pregnant. She’s the surrogate for some mutual friends of ours, and she’s in her third trimester.

Mariah: Bet you’re wondering what’s going on out here. Right, bowie? I bet you think that I’ve gotten lazy since we aren’t going on runs anymore and there’s no fresh air.

[ Chuckles ] Probably picturing me just, you know, lounging about, but I’m not, okay? I mean, I am. It’s just not by choice.

[ Chuckles ] I promised abby and chance that I would do whatever I could to get them a happy and healthy baby. That’s what I’m gonna do. It’s what I’m gonna do, despite this crazy situation. I am sticking to that, okay?

[ Sniffles ]

[ Sighs ] Hi.

[ Chuckles ] Hi, there, precious little bowie.

[ Sniffles ] I’m so glad that you’re here with me.

[ Sniffles ] ‘Cause not only are you

[Chuckles] Great company,

[Sniffles] But you’ve given me something really positive to focus on.

[ Sniffles ] So thank you. You are the only thing keeping me sane [Sniffles] In this seemingly endless nightmare.

Adam: Hmm. I don’t see any suitcases around.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Guess that means you found a place to live?

Sally: I found a temporary solution, but I’d like to find something a little more permanent, so if you hear of anything opening up, pass it along, please.

Adam: Guess that means you’re feeling optimistic about your new job working out.

Sally: Oh, I’m more than optimistic. I am determined to make myself completely indispensable to newman media. But for now, I will settle for buying my new boss a drink.

Adam: You know, I hate to admit this, but I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly review our hr policies. Something tells me that thing might be frowned upon.

Sally: Mm. Does it really matter, though? ‘Cause you’re in charge. You can always change the policy. Or you could just suspend it for the evening.

Adam: You know, something tells me that kind of thinking might have got you in trouble at fenmore’S.

Sally: Hmm, right, ’cause you’re such a stickler for the rules. Nope, never mind. You’re right. Besides, you’re rich, and I have rent and car payments to worry about, so you can buy your own drink.

Adam: Somehow I don’t think you’re gonna have to worry about making rent. And I do agree that you do have a bright future at newman media. And to show you how confident i am about that, I’m gonna let you buy me that drink.

Stitch: Before I left, you told me that mariah’s texts didn’t sound like her. Are you saying you’ve gotten more texts that seem off?

Abby: Mariah hasn’t made a single call since she left, and she hasn’t used her credit cards.

Tessa: And we finally did what you suggested — trying to use locator apps to track her phone — but they were all blocked from accessing her location.

Abby: Rey tried using the gcpd’s advanced tracking equipment, and he still came up empty.

Tessa: There was a second layer of security that bounced the phone signal all across the country, so it was impossible to locate her phone.

Stitch: So the only assumption you can make is that someone’s taken her phone.

Abby: And taken her, too.

Stitch: Has there been any kind of ransom note?

Abby: No, that’s the strangest part. Is that whoever is behind this wants us to believe that mariah left on her own and is sending these texts herself.

Stitch: Okay, well, what would be the point of that? Whoever this is couldn’t possibly think that you guys would just throw your hands in the air and give up looking for her.

Tessa: I mean, we did put off the search for way too long. “Respect her privacy,” we said. Meanwhile, the trail was growing cold.

Abby: I mean, if this is about time and not money, then why? I mean, how long is this gonna go on? And what do we have to do to get mariah back?

Devon: Her name is mariah copeland.

Denise: And what can you tell me about her?

Devon: Probably an important bit of information you need to know is the baby she’s carrying is related to just about every powerful family in town. It’s the son of abby newman abbott chancellor. And you can bet that all of those families are gonna move heaven and earth to try and find mariah.

Denise: Exactly. So I have to ask you again, why do you feel like you need my expertise, too?

Devon: Well, because there aren’t any leads. There’s literally nothing for anyone to go off of, and for me personally, just getting to know you and your background, I was very, very impressed with your dedication to finding out the truth about richard nealon’s death. ‘Cause, I mean, you uncovered things on a case that had been cold for over 30 years.

Denise: Yeah, that’s because facts are facts, and they never change, no matter much time goes by.

Devon: It still takes that kind of thinking to make a difference. On top of how personally you take your cases, it’s clear — i can tell that, you know, it broke your heart to know that richard never got to meet his daughters.

Denise: Oh, their lives would’ve turned out so differently if they’d just been reunited. That will never sit right with me.

Devon: See, I know that, and that’s the very reason that i reached out to you because to me, there’s a lot of similarities in this case. There’s a child who could be in danger of never meeting the parents that are trying so desperately to find him. So I’m hoping that you’re willing to help me out in any way that you can and potentially stop another tragedy from happening.

Denise: How do you think mariah and abby’s families will feel about you taking the initiative and hiring a private investigator?

Devon: I know for a fact they wouldn’t have a problem at all with it. I’m very close to both mariah and abby. I consider them family, and i know they feel the same about me, so it wouldn’t be a problem. Are you willing at all to help me?

Sally: Ooh, it’s interesting. I detect traces of a robust smoke, alongside a tang of… coffee, vanilla, and maybe a glimmer of fruit. But there’s something that i cannot quite put my finger on.

Adam: That extra nuance is from being aged for 16 years in cask wood. For that intense sweetness.

Sally: Oh. Impressive.

Adam: You have a pretty impressive palate yourself.

Sally: Well, I have to admit, this single malt is normally a bit out of my price range, but since you were ordering it, i figured I should try it, too.

Adam: I think that abby put it on the menu at my father’s request.

Sally: Well, I guess being a newman has its perks.

Chloe: Let’s sit here.

Kevin: Great.

[ Sighs ]

Chloe: Well, will you look at that. My boss and my new employee are having drinks together.

Kevin: I’m surprised you didn’t warn sally about adam.

Chloe: Oh, I did. Twice. Apparently I didn’t get my point across.

Kids can change minds.

Denise: The baby’s connection to so many of genoa city’s leading families adds multiple layers of complexity and potential motives. I mean, obviously, a kidnapper could demand an enormous ransom.

Devon: Sure, and nothing like that has happened so far.

Denise: You know, I seem to recall that abby newman was a minor celebrity at one time. She could possibly have an obsessive fan or two out there.

Devon: Mm. Another thing you need to know is abby’s husband is an undercover federal agent, who, I’m sure, has a long list of enemies, and he’s actually off the radar right now. He’s on a case, and it has crossed my mind that, you know, he could’ve been compromised or blown his cover and someone’s coming after his family now.

Denise: That’s possible. But have you considered that maybe mariah changed her mind and decided she couldn’t give the baby up? That happens sometimes with surrogates.

Devon: No, I know it does, and, sure, we thought about it, but it’s the last thing that anybody would believe, just ’cause of how excited she’s been about this whole process and about helping her friends out. It was her idea, you know, to volunteer to do this. We actually volunteered together. She’s the carrier, and I’m the donor.

Denise: I see.

Devon: It’s just there’s a lot of people who would be devastated if anything bad happened to mariah or that child, and I just want to do everything that I can in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Denise: I’m in. And I’ll whatever I can to help.

Devon: Oh, thank you so much. Truly, thank you.

Mariah: Oh. Oh! Oh, hi. Oh, gosh. What was that elbow jab about, dude?

[ Chuckles ] What? You tired of sitting still? Would you like me to move? Are you hungry? Well, I’m sorry, but there is not much I can do about that. I don’t exactly have control of our nourishment in here.

[ Chuckles ] Actually, we’re a lot alike, you know. Both trapped in a very small space, completely dependent on somebody else to bring us food, to keep us alive, with no idea what’s going on outside and no way to communicate.

[ Sniffs ] You have a leg up on me there. At least you can send a jab or two every now and then to send a message. Our families must be so worried about us.

[ Sighs ] And this lunatic who is holding us here has my phone. Nobody has seen me in weeks or knows where I am. Except for the lunatic who was watching me before I covered that camera. Why didn’t somebody come in here to uncover it? You know what, bowie? That might be a good sign. Because whoever is keeping us here clearly doesn’t want me to see them so I’d be able to identify them later, so maybe that means they’re planning on letting us go. Hopefully soon. Please, god, let it be soon.

Stitch: I have to agree with abby. I don’t think whoever kidnapped mariah’s after money. But maybe there are witnesses who saw what happened to her. Have you thought about offering a reward?

Abby: I’d be more than willing, but we’re holding off at rey’s request.

Tessa: He thinks it’s best if we let the person who took mariah think that their plan is working.

Abby: It’s so excruciating to try to pretend like we don’t know what’s going on, when, really, I just — I just want to text — I want to say, “you bastard, let her go.”

Tessa: But we can’T. Rey’s right. We have no idea how this person or people would react if they thought we were onto them.

Abby: I just have to believe that mariah and the baby are safe. I can’t think otherwise.

Stitch: I’m so sorry for what you’re all going through.

Tessa: I’m sorry, but I have to go. Doing nothing is just driving me crazy. I’m gonna go check on sharon.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Stitch: Abby, there’s got to be something I can do for you, anything. Just tell me.

Abby: I really can’t think of anything. But just having you here, knowing that you care, it means a lot. I really appreciate it.

Stitch: Tell me about this guy rey. How much confidence do you have in how he’s handling this?

Abby: Oh, I trust rey implicitly. He’s a smart, dedicated detective who just happens to be mariah’s stepdad. That being said, there’s not much he can do with so little to go on.

Stitch: So, what? We just wait for a lead to turn up?

Abby: I’m starting to realize that we can’t just rely on the cops. We need more help.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Chloe: [ Exhales sharply ]

Kevin: Chloe, not a good plan.

Chloe: [ Clears throat ] Wow. You two are really putting in some late hours. Did I miss the memo about this little meeting? ‘Cause I’d sure hate to think that I’m being left out of any discussions about the fashion platform I’m in charge of.

Adam: Relax, chloe. We’re not talking about business. I’m just getting to know our new hire a little better. Anyway, thanks for the drink, sally.

Chloe: What are you doing? Did you not hear anything I said to you before? I just heard something amazing!

Chloe: I’m getting the feeling that you weren’t taking me seriously when I warned you about adam.

Sally: You pointed out the fact that buttering up the fact is good office politics.

Chloe: No, but that — that wasn’t just harmless chit-chat. That was flirting.

Sally: No, I was just being friendly.

Chloe: No, you are letting your guard down and falling for adam’s “great guy” routine, and I keep on telling you that adam is not a great guy.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: I — this — this is a great guy. Sally, this is kevin.

Kevin: Hello.

Sally: It’s nice to meet you.

Kevin: You too.

Sally: And just so you know, I did hear your warning, but you also said that everybody deserves a second chance.

Chloe: Okay, so now I see where the disconnect is. When I said that, I was talking about people like you, me, and kevin. We all have hearts and consciences and we feel badly when we make mistakes and hurt people. Not the town sociopath.

Sally: You guys are brutal.

Chloe: No. No, I will tell you what is brutal. There is no one savvier or more street-smart than my best friend chelsea. She literally grew up running cons, and she thought that for sure she could handle adam, but he — he handled her right into a psych ward.

Kevin: And she wasn’t the first. He has a gift for driving strong, confident people to desperation. And when he’s done with them, they don’t even recognize themselves.

Sally: Okay, so why would you be willing to work for someone like that? I mean, if he’s really that bad.

Kevin: That is an excellent question, one that I’ve asked myself.

Chloe: Because he owes chelsea and me. And we are going to take what we want from him and we are going to move on. What we are not going to do is trust him. We are not going to let our guard down. Not at all. Not ever. Because we have learned more than anyone whoever does lives to regret it.

Tessa: Hey, sharon.

Sharon: Oh.

Tessa: How you doing?

Sharon: Not great.

Tessa: I wish that I had good news for you, but the only thing that I have to report is that stitch is back in town. He came by the chancellor house.

Sharon: Why?

Tessa: To check on abby. He’s trying to be helpful, but everything he’s suggested, we’ve either tried or decided against.

Sharon: Well, I just have to trust that rey is going to find her.

Tessa: I should’ve known that she wouldn’t have just disappeared like that. Suddenly, without saying goodbye to me. I mean, that never made any sense. If she doesn’t come back —

Sharon: Don’T. Stop it, okay? Don’t even go there. She is coming back. It’s because of the love that you two share.

Tessa: Do you really think so?

Sharon: Yes, I do. I believe in that, and I am forever grateful for it. That’s what’s gonna help keep mariah strong and fighting to come back to us. So your job right now — just hold on to the faith and that love. Okay?

Victor: Stitch.

Stitch: Hey.

Victor: Welcome back. Nice to see you.

Stitch: Nice to see you, too.

Victor: You’re back.

Stitch: Yep.

Victor: I understand you’ve taken a position at memorial.

Abby: Daddy, I’m sorry, I’m not trying to interrupt, but i have some urgent news to tell you.

Victor: What is it?

Abby: Mariah’s missing.

Victor: What do you mean mariah’s missing? Since when?

Abby: She’s been gone for several weeks now.

Victor: How’s that possible?

Abby: She sent us a text saying that she had a sudden business trip, so tessa and I, we didn’t think much of it, but then she started texting us saying that she needed more time by herself.

Victor: Well, do you think she might have taken a vacation?

Abby: No. And she keeps making excuses about why she’s not coming home, so we asked rey to look into it, and he thinks that she’s not the one sending these messages. Someone has taken mariah and the baby.

Victor: Oh, sweetheart. Why didn’t you come to me in the first place? (Drill sergeant) what a pleasant morning. It’s warm, but not too warm.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Abby: You’re right, dad. I should’ve come to you the second I suspected something wasn’t right.

Victor: [ Exhales ]

Stitch: In abby’s defense, these kidnappers were very clever. They made it sound like there was no real reason for concern.

Victor: I assure you that my security team and I will find mariah. We’ll bring her back.

Kevin: I think we got through to sally.

Chloe: I certainly hope so. I like her. I think she has enormous potential and she is a risk-taker. And in fashion, that really pays off. Unfortunately, in life, it causes problems. I’m afraid that she’s gonna need a little extra adult supervision, which is fine. I can totally handle that. Oh, kevin, I’m so sorry. I’ve just made our entire date night about adam and sally.

Kevin: No, no, it’s not that. I — all this talk about sociopaths and bad guys, it’s got me thinking about mariah. I wonder if there’s anybody looking out for her right now.

Chloe: I want to believe that there is. As a matter of fact, rey has been chasing down all possible leads. He even questioned adam.

Kevin: Rey doesn’t think adam was involved. Even in adam’s warped mind, there’s no plausible motive for him to want to take abby’s baby or sharon’s daughter, for that matter.

Chloe: He just saved faith’s life twice. He scored major points with sharon. It just makes no sense for him to turn around and terrorize her other daughter. Sharon would never talk to him again. And we know the only person whose opinion matters to him is sharon.

Adam: Am I too late?

Sharon: I was just closing up, but, um, I can still get you a cup of coffee. It’ll have to be to-go, though.

Adam: I didn’t come for the coffee, sharon. I was hoping there might be some news about mariah.

Tessa: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Voice breaking ] Mariah, I miss you.

Mariah: I want to come home to you, tessa. You must know that. You must feel it.

Tessa: I’m gonna find you. No matter how long it takes, i will never give up. Please believe that.

Mariah: Tessa, I’m so scared.

[ Door opens ]

Tessa: Mariah needs us. She’s terrified. I can feel it.

Feel the clarity of

non-drowsy claritin.

Tessa: You probably think it was in my head, but I know what I felt.

Abby: No, I totally get it. I’ve been trying to do the same thing with chance since he’s been gone, and I have to believe that he’s felt it. And I believe that mariah can feel your love and support, and she has to know that we’re doing everything we can to find her.

Tessa: So far, it’s not working. There has to be something else we can try.

Abby: Well, stitch and I just came back from the ranch. My father has promised to do everything he can to help.

Tessa: I just wish that we had new leads that he could follow up on.

Stitch: Don’t ever underestimate victor newman.

Tessa: I just have this nagging feeling that we’re missing something.

Abby: [ Sighs ] ‘We have gone over those phony texts a thousand times. You know, I would be more than happy to go over them again if you think that there’s something there.

Tessa: There aren’t any clues in them. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go write some music. Those creative juices, they get my adrenaline pumping and new thoughts and ideas start coming to me.

Stitch: Well, this whole thing is hitting her pretty hard.

Abby: Tessa and mariah are deeply in love. They belong together. And I don’t know how someone could do something so cruel to them for no apparent reason. No, no. I am not gonna fall apart. Mariah and the baby need me to stay strong so I can do everything possible to bring them home.

Sharon: Tessa was just here. It’s been hard on all of us.

Adam: Well, I just — i wanted you to know if there is anything that I can do.

Sharon: I wish there was. And I appreciate your concern. I got your text. I just hope that rey can figure this out.

Adam: Well, if anyone can find mariah, it’s — it’s rey.

Sharon: It’s taken all the energy I have to, um, try to keep my emotions and my imagination in check, so I’m sorry, I don’t mean to come across rude.

Adam: No, it’s — it’s fine. I’m praying that mariah will come home soon. Safe and sound.

Sharon: Thank you. And thank you for understanding.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Thank you for the coffee.

Devon: Abby, I did something, and I hope you don’t mind. But I hired my own private investigator. Somebody that worked with amanda on the sutton case, and she was fantastic at tracking that information.

Abby: Thank you.

Devon: Of course.

Stitch: Evening, devon.

Devon: Hey, stitch. I didn’t know you were back in town.

Abby: He just got back tonight. He came to check on us.

Devon: Oh, how nice of you. Aren’t you supposed to be moving back to town to start your job as chief of surgery at memorial?

Stitch: Yeah, well, we’ll see.

Abby: Wait, I thought it was a done deal.

Devon: Yeah, I’m also confused because my cousin, dr. Nate hastings, just started his new job as chief of surgery at memorial.

Stitch: I didn’t want to get into this while you’re dealing with so much, but memorial needed someone who could start right away. I had to be with my son, so i missed out on the position.

Abby: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I’m happy for nate, but, um — wait, I guess I’m just confused because if you didn’t get the job, then why are you back here?

Stitch: I was worried about you. I had a feeling I needed to see how you were doing. And after learning what’s going on, I’m glad I did.

Life…

Abby: Stitch went with me to ask my father for help finding mariah. He put his security team on it right away.

Stitch: Yeah, victor seemed confident they would find her.

Abby: And I just found out that devon hired a private investigator, so between that and the gcpd, it’s like we have our own search and rescue mission going on.

Stitch: It’s a shame chance can’t be here. He’d obviously want to be a part of the search teams if he knew what was happening.

Devon: Oh, there’s a message on the way to him as we speak, so he could show up any day.

Abby: You know, I would love nothing more than to have my husband here with me right now, but in the meantime, knowing that I have friends like the two of you, it means a lot to me. I will never forget how you have been there for me and mariah during this crisis.

Victor: Well, if she’s on a flight or is taking a train, then she bought the ticket under a false name. Well, you let me know as soon as you hear anything. Alright.

[ Sighs ] Have you heard the news?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Rey came to talk to me earlier.

Victor: To question you or what?

Adam: No, I doubt he’s seriously suspicious. He’s just covering his bases. So, um, do you have any idea what’s behind mariah’s disappearance?

Victor: No. No, I don’T. I don’t think it’s for ransom. Have you spoken with sharon?

Adam: Just now. Briefly.

Victor: How’s she doing?

Adam: Not good. No, she’s already been through a lot this year, and I think she’s hanging on by a thread. You think she has a right to be scared?

Victor: I’m gonna be honest with you. I have to tell you that this does not look good at all.

Mariah: Thank god I have you to talk to, bowie. Constant silence is driving me crazy.

[ Sniffles ] Yeah, I bet you hate it, too.

[ Crying ] I bet you miss all that cool music I used to play for you every day. And tessa’s guitar. Oh, my god. What I wouldn’t give to hear her playing that right now. We had such beautiful plans for your birth, you know that?

[ Sniffles ] Did you know that tessa’s music was gonna be playing in the delivery room? Yeah. It was. It was gonna be the first sound you heard when you came into the world. Abby and tessa were gonna be by my side, encouraging me, helping me through the delivery. What if they don’t find us? What if we don’t get out in time? Does this psycho really plan to have me give birth in here? Alone? Oh, god.

[ Sobbing ] Oh, bowie, I don’t know if I can do it.

[ Crying ] What if something goes wrong?

[ Sobbing ]

Next week on

“the young and the restless”…

Lily: Yeah, I’m getting kind of a funny feeling. It’s that feeling I get when i know that you’re hiding something from me.

Sally: I wasn’t gonna share this with you until I was further along with this idea that I’m working on.

Chloe: Which is?

Sally: I’m gonna convince victoria to let me design her wedding dress.

Victor: In our investigation of ashland locke’s past, we may have come up with something that’s potentially very interesting.

Mariah: [ Gasps ]
