ABC News’ ‘20/20’ Presents Documentary on Killer Possibly Fueled by Love Days After Murderer in So-Called ‘Fatal Attraction’ Case Is Released From Prison, Airing Friday, June 21
Two-Hour Event Reports on Diane Downs Who Shot Her Three Young Children Possibly Due to Her Infatuation With a Married Man
Features Interview With Diane’s Youngest Child, Born While Diane Was in Prison and Adopted by Another Family
Just days after Carolyn Warmus, who murdered her lover’s wife and drew comparisons to the film “Fatal Attraction,” received parole in New York, “20/20” reports on the crimes of Diane Downs, whose motive to kill may also have been fueled by an affair and is up for parole next year, hoping to soon walk free. Diane’s infatuation with a married man, who said he had no interest in being a father to anyone’s children, was the possible motive behind why she shot her three young children in her car, seriously injuring two and killing one. Diane captured the nation’s attention as the story made headlines and became a bestselling book and a two-part TV series starring Farrah Fawcett, both titled “Small Sacrifices.” Now, 36 years after that tragic day, Diane’s youngest child, Becky Babcock, who was born while Diane was incarcerated and adopted by another family, speaks to “20/20.” In the two-hour “20/20” documentary, Becky opens up about her adoption, learning the truth about her mother, letters from her mother in prison and life now, including raising her teenage son. “20/20″ airs Friday, June 21 (9:00 – 11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
The “20/20” documentary event features interviews with Doug Welch, lead investigator on the case; Wayne Seifer, ex-husband of one of Diane’s fellow inmates, who housed Diane when she escaped from the Oregon Women’s Correctional Center in 1987; Loren Glover, detective with the Oregon State Police when Diane escaped; Steven Wilhite, surgeon on call the night Diane brought her children into the hospital; Anne Jaeger, former anchor at KEZI, an ABC News affiliate, who covered the case and interviewed Diane just before her arrest; Jim Pex, former criminalist with the Oregon State Police Crime Detection Lab, who assisted in the investigation; and more. The documentary also features footage from the ABC News archives, including an interview with “Small Sacrifices” author Ann Rule, who passed away in 2015.
On May 19, 1983, Diane arrived at an emergency room in Springfield, Oregon, claiming that a man flagged her down in the middle of an isolated road and shot her children through the window. As the days went by, Diane’s demeanor raised red flags as she was seen giggling and smiling while discussing the shooting. After uncovering the possible motive, police arrested her on the basis of significant forensic evidence and eyewitness testimony from her 9-year-old daughter, Christie. During Diane’s trial Christie took the witness stand, following months of physical and emotional therapy, and testified that her mom was the shooter. Diane was found guilty, was diagnosed with three personality disorders and sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years. She was denied parole in 2008 and 2010, and maintains her innocence. She will be up for parole again in 2020. (Rebroadcast. ABC OAD: 3/22/19)

REAL-LIFE NCIS AGENTS TEAM UP WITH AIR FORCE INVESTIGATORS TO SOLVE THE MURDER OF AN AMERICAN AIRMAN IN JAPAN, LEADING TO A DARK, TWISTED PATH OF DECEPTION, FRAUD AND WITCHCRAFT, IN “NCIS: THE CASES THEY CAN’T FORGET”
Wednesday, June 19 (9:00 PM) Preview
When real Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents and their counterparts from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations probe the murder of an Air Force sergeant in Japan, they are led on a dark, twisted trail of deception, fraud and witchcraft in NCIS: THE CASES THEY CAN’T FORGET: “The Enemy Within” to be broadcast Wednesday, June 19 (9:00 PM) on the CBS Television Network.
Air Force Technical Sergeant Curtis Eccleston was found brutally stabbed to death in his apartment off base in Okinawa, Japan. The respected airman had no known enemies and a career on the rise. His death shocked the Japanese island.
Agents Lindsay Temes and Heather Bellar from Air Force Office of Special Investigations were among the first to arrive at the gruesome crime scene.
“We didn’t have a suspect. We didn’t know if it was a Marine or a member of the Navy or an Air Force member or a Japanese member that had killed Curtis,” said Air Force OSI Agent Lindsay Temes.
Air Force OSI agents called in NCIS to help solve murder.
“Curtis didn’t have any known enemies at all. We couldn’t find anyone that had any kind of grievances with him,” said NCIS Special Agent Brandon McKinnon.
NCIS and Air Force OSI agents were initially concerned because Eccleston’s wife Barbara was nowhere to be found until hours after his body was discovered. Investigators soon learned Barbara was cheating on her husband. At the time of his death, the couple had been in the process of getting a divorce. She told them he had been dealing drugs and she was concerned he was killed because of a drug deal gone bad.
But as agents began to look into the drug angle, something just didn’t seem right. When those leads ran cold the agents went back to the scene of the crime. What they uncovered through digital forensics would reveal that the cover-up and diabolical premeditation was almost as brutal as the crime itself.
“These are just things that you don’t expect to see in real life,” said Travis Tritten, a former reporter for Stars and Stripes. “These are things that happen in movies.”
NCIS: THE CASES THEY CAN’T FORGET is in its third season and is hosted by Rocky Carroll.
  • CBS WHISTLEBLOWER, Friday, June 21 Show More
    6/21/19 (Fr.) – Spinal Cap –

TWO WHISTLEBLOWERS SHINE A LIGHT ON AN ELABORATE BACK SURGERY SCHEME TO DEFRAUD TAXPAYERS AND PRIVATE INSURERS WHILE RISKING PATIENTS’ HEALTH WITH UNNECESSARY SPINAL FUSION SURGERIES, ON “WHISTLEBLOWER,” FRIDAY, JUNE 21

“The Billion-Dollar Back Surgery Scam: Patients in Pain and Peril” – In 2011 Mark Sersansie began a new sales job with a medical supply company in California, but he soon began to suspect that not everything with the company was as it seemed. After teaming up with Bill Reynolds, a former DEA agent turned insurance fraud investigator, the pair realized that they may be looking at one of the most complex – and dangerous – schemes to defraud workers’ compensation insurance in California state history.

Host Alex Ferrer uncovers the secrets of the billion-dollar back surgery scheme, on WHISTLEBLOWER, Friday, June 21 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

At the center of the scheme were doctors who were being paid large kickbacks to steer patients into spinal fusion surgery at specific hospitals, including many cases where the procedures were medically unnecessary. They did this to take advantage of a former provision in California’s workers’ compensation law that allowed hospitals to “pass through” to insurance carriers the entire cost of medical hardware used in spinal surgeries. The pass-through provision placed no dollar limits on the cost of the hardware, which allowed hospitals to invoice and obtain reimbursement from insurance carriers for deceptively inflated amounts.

One of the distributors of the spinal hardware devised a plan to make even more money by manufacturing its own surgical screws, called pedicles, using non-FDA approved materials. Once implanted, the counterfeit hardware could potentially leach toxic substances and cause dangerous infections. Reynolds and Sersansie learned that hundreds – maybe even thousands – of patients may have been implanted with this counterfeit hardware. The pair filed a whistleblower lawsuit in 2012.

“48 HOURS: DEFENDING DJ” GOES INSIDE A FAMILY’S EMOTIONAL FIGHT TO RESTORE A SON’S REPUTATION AFTER HE WAS FATALLY SHOT BY A POLICE OFFICER
48 HOURS brings viewers a story of dedicated parents and their struggle to restore their son’s reputation after he was shot dead by a police officer, in an encore of “Defending DJ,” to be broadcast Saturday, June 22 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
CBS News special correspondent James Brown and 48 HOURS take viewers back to the early morning hours of Oct. 17, 2010, when Danroy “DJ” Henry, a Pace University football player, was shot dead by Pleasantville, N.Y., police officer Aaron Hess. That event triggered a seven-year journey for DJ’s family as they searched for answers.
“We’re not anti-police,” says Danroy Henry, Sr., DJ’s father. “We’re just trying to understand what the facts tell us. Was it a justified shooting or was it not justified? Because if it wasn’t – it was murder.”
“People believed fervently that they knew what happened,” says Brian Sokoloff, who represents Hess. “And whenever you hear of a case like this, you can’t believe first impressions.” Preview
“Defending DJ” is a story that raises significant questions about how the police responded; the narrative set early by the Mount Pleasant police, who claimed Henry tried to mow down officers with his car; and what really happened that night. It’s also about one family’s intensely personal quest to find the truth about their son’s final night alive.
During a night out at a bar with his teammates, a fight broke out among other patrons, and police were called. DJ and his friends left the bar and were waiting in his car in a fire lane. DJ’s passengers say an officer knocked on the back window indicating DJ should move. According to police, when that officer approached DJ’s car, he sped off. Soon after, Hess, then a Pleasantville police officer, ended up on the hood, shooting in. DJ was fatally shot while behind the wheel of his car.
In a hastily called press conference, Mount Pleasant police chief Louis Alagno defended the police officers and said Henry tried to run them over while accelerating away from the scene. Hess maintained he shot into the car because he feared for his life and had no other option. Henry’s friends and witnesses denied he was driving fast and said he wasn’t trying to hit the officer. They paint a far different picture. Witnesses also noted that Henry was slow to receive medical attention.
What the Henrys heard from police about their son didn’t ring true, either. The Henrys vowed to learn the truth – no matter what. They just wanted to know what happened to their son. Despite questions raised about his actions the night Henry died, Hess was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.
