  • ABC 1969: Generation Woodstock (5/21) Show More
ABC NEWS CHRONICLES THE YOUTH MOVEMENTS OF 1969 THAT SPURRED THE WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL AND STONEWALL UPRISING, TUESDAY, MAY 21, ON ABC
Episode Features Interviews With Activists Laverne Cox, Jazz Jennings, Miss Major and Mark Segal; Woodstock Co-Creators Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld; and Music Artist John Fogerty
“Generation Woodstock” – In upstate New York, amidst social turmoil and war, two determined 20-somethings hatched a far-fetched plan to transform a dairy farm into a politically inspired rock festival billed as “3 Days of Peace & Music.” Meanwhile, in New York’s Greenwich Village, an underground community of LGBTQ+ youth was becoming fed up with social inequality, ready to rise up to challenge harsh laws aimed at their community and break centuries of taboos. Ultimately, both the Woodstock Music & Arts Festival and the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 changed America and the world forever. By illuminating two of the most pivotal social events of that summer, “Generation Woodstock” spotlights a trailblazing, freethinking generation that was determined to change America by challenging the status quo through their desire to promote peace, love, unity, equality and individual freedom. Powerful firsthand accounts and contemporary voices highlight the cataclysmic youth rebellion that shook the country in the summer of 1969 through music, protest and political activism, and how its spirit lives on in the current youth movements of 2019. The special episode airs TUESDAY, MAY 21 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network and will be available streaming and on demand.

‘This is Farrah Fawcett’ Airs Thursday, May 23 (8:00 – 10:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC
ABC News presents a two-hour prime-time special on America’s golden girl Farrah Fawcett. From that iconic red bathing suit poster to her role in the hit show “Charlie’s Angels,” Fawcett took the 1970s by storm and captivated the nation with her every move. But in 2006, Fawcett was confronted with her biggest challenge when she was diagnosed with cancer and began an aggressive fight for her life. Now, almost 10 years after her passing, ABC News reports on her life, career, fame and lasting legacy, told through new interviews with those who knew her best, and rare footage from the intimate video diaries of her fight against cancer. “This is Farrah Fawcett” airs THURSDAY, MAY 23 (8:00–10:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
The two-hour documentary features new interviews with actress Jaclyn Smith, Fawcett’s co-star on “Charlie’s Angels”; Alana Stewart, Fawcett’s close friend who helped record her cancer battle for the two-hour documentary “Farrah’s Story”; Bruce McBroom, the Hollywood photographer who shot Fawcett’s iconic swimsuit poster; Mela Murphy, Fawcett’s confidante and hairstylist; Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett’s primary physician; and Dr. Ursula Jacob, Fawcett’s physician in Germany who used alternative treatments for her cancer. The documentary also includes Barbara Walters’ landmark interviews with Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal, Fawcett’s partner at the time of her death.
After attending the University of Texas, Fawcett moved to Los Angeles and began her professional career. Fawcett first appeared in television commercials but quickly began starring in TV shows and then movies. Fawcett continuously sought out projects she found challenging and worthwhile, including her groundbreaking roles in the films “The Burning Bed”and “Extremities,” which both exposed the dark truth of domestic violence and helped shine a light on victims. Fawcett’s final project was “Farrah’s Story,” which documented the harsh realities of cancer treatment. The film aired just weeks before Fawcett passed away at age 62.
20/20 Airing Friday, May 24, 2019 (9:00 PM-11:00 PM EST) on the ABC Television Network: Thirty Years After the Vicious Attack on a Jogger in Central Park, ‘20/20’ Presents a Two-Hour Documentary on the Case That Forever Changed the Lives of All Involved, Friday, May 24
Features New, Rare Interview With Jogger Trisha Meili and the Only Interview With Matias Reyes From the ABC News Archives, Who Confessed to Assaulting Meili
Has Exclusive Interviews With Police Involved in the Case, Speaking Out for the First Time Following a Lifted Gag Order
On the evening of April 19, 1989, 28-year-old Trisha Meili was viciously beaten, raped and left to die inside New York City’s Central Park. The series of events that followed, triggered a media frenzy and forever changed the lives of all involved, including the five African American and Hispanic teenagers – Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson and Korey Wise – who were convicted in the attack due to their confessions, which they said were coerced by police. Their verdicts were later set aside after Matias Reyes confessed to and was convicted in the attack. Now, 30 years after the attack, a two-hour “20/20” documentary re-examines the brutal crime and its aftermath, and features a new, rare interview with Meili, the victim of the Central Park attack; exclusive interviews with police involved in the case, speaking out for the first time following a lifted gag order; and the only interview with Reyes from the ABC News archives, during which he confessed to raping Meili. “20/20: One Night in Central Park” airs Friday, May 24 (9:00 – 11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
“20/20” features exclusive interviews with Michael Armstrong, former federal prosecutor who reinvestigated the case and found no police misconduct; Victoria Breyer, juror for Richardson and Wise’s trial; Eric Reynolds, retired NYPD detective and arresting officer on the scene; and Michael Sheehan, former NYPD detective who worked on the case. The documentary includes new interviews with Sarah Burns, director of “The Central Park Five,” a documentary about the case; Saul Kassin, an expert on false confessions; Reverend Al Sharpton, who was heavily involved in the case and assisted in raising bail for some of the accused; Dr. Robert Kurtz and Dr. Jane Haher, who treated Meili; Jelani Cobb, reporter who wrote about the case in The New Yorker; Errol Louis, NY1 journalist who reported on the case; and Tim Clements, co-prosecutor for the District Attorney’s Office during the trials. The documentary features archival interviews with Santana, McCray, Salaam, Richardson and Wise, and some of their family members; and Harold Brueland and Eric Roach, jurors for Salaam, McCray and Santana’s trial; along with exclusive footage of Wise getting out of prison.
Two trials followed Meili’s attack and all five men who were convicted for various crimes and served time in prison. No scientific evidence tied them to the crimes. Thirteen years after their convictions, Reyes, a convicted homicidal, serial rapist who was serving life in prison, confessed to attacking and raping Meili alone, and police identified him as a perfect DNA match to the perpetrator. After the verdicts of the five men were set aside, they sued New York City for the years they spent in prison. In 2014, they received a settlement from the city of $41 million after Mayor Bill de Blasio was elected, 11 years after their lawsuit was filed. The city denied any wrongdoing in the settlement.

(10:00 PM-11:00 PM EST) on the ABC Television Network: “20/20 SATURDAY” (Repeat) Man Whose Face Became Disfigured During Attempted Suicide Shares His New Face With ABC News’ ‘20/20,’ Following Life-Changing Transplant Surgery, Saturday, May 25 (Rebroadcast)
Hour Includes Emotional Meeting with Donor’s Mother and Recipient
After Cameron “Cam” Underwood tried to commit suicide at age 24 by shooting himself in the face, his life was saved by doctors, but he was left disfigured: missing teeth, a chin, cheekbones and facial structure. In December 2017, Cam underwent a life-changing face transplant surgery that took over 25 hours to perform. More than two years after that tragic day, “20/20” co-anchor Amy Robach sat down with Cam who shared his new face with the world and opened up about his surgery and new lease on life. The hour also features Cam’s emotional meeting with Sally Fisher, the mother of his face donor, Will Fisher. “20/20” airs on Saturday, May 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Rebroadcast. ABC OAD: 11/16/18)
The hour features interviews with Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, who performed the face transplant surgery at NYU Langone Health; Bev Bailey Potter, Cam’s mom; Randy Underwood, Cam’s father; Julie Jones, Aaron and Brad Underwood, Cam’s siblings; Kevin Pauls, Cam’s friend; and Patrick Hardison, a Mississippi fireman who also underwent a face transplant surgery performed by Dr. Rodriguez after being severely injured in a fire.
Cam was an athletic young man who worked in his stepfather’s business after high school graduation, earning enough money to buy a house by age 19. However, over a period of years during which he broke up with his longtime girlfriend, drifted from a close friend, saw his dear brothers move out of state and was dealing with stress from his work, Cam began to suffer from depression and developed a drinking problem. After his suicide attempt, Cam was rushed to University of California Davis Medical Center where he underwent multiple surgeries. But his life would never be the same and he started to wear a mask everywhere he went. After learning about the life-changing face transplant surgery that Dr. Rodriguez could perform on him, Cam waited for a perfect donor with the same skin tone, skull size, hair color, a full set of teeth and the same blood type. Cam found a match in Will who died after a long struggle with mental illness. With the blessing of Will’s mother, Cam received the transplant.

5/25/19 (Sa.) (10:00 PM) Repeat A YOUNG IRAQ WAR VET DIAGNOSED WITH PTSD IS ACCUSED OF KILLING THE WOMAN HE LOVES – WAS SHE ANOTHER CASUALTY OF WAR?
“48 Hours Presents: Private Needham’s War” Saturday, May 25 Preview
Pvt. John Needham beat a woman he loved to death – that much is certain. What is not known for sure is what role post-traumatic stress disorder may have played in Needham’s actions when he killed 19-year-old Jacque Villagomez. 48 HOURS revisits Needham’s story in an encore of “Private Needham’s War” to be broadcast Saturday, May 25 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Needham’s story started in Iraq where he was severely injured in combat and exposed to multiple IED and grenade attacks. He was later diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. From the beginning, Needham took responsibility for Villagomez’s death but said he remembered little of the incident. He said that, as they argued one night, something inside him snapped. He blamed his brain injury and PTSD for the beating that came next. “What other incident in my life besides being in combat would contribute to me being a murderer?” Needham said.
