Devon: Any word?
Amanda: No, not yet. But he’ll be here.
Devon: You sound so sure.
Amanda: Because I am.
Devon: He was pretty annoyed with me.
Amanda: Nate said he wanted to come and work this out. We need to take him at his word. But I did think that it was a good idea to do this outside of the office in case the two of you got heated again.
Devon: Why, because we’d be less likely to cause a scene in public?
Amanda: Exactly.
Devon: That’s — that’s pretty smart. Not gonna raise my voice —
Nate: I don’t give a damn about your deadline. I keep telling you — no comment.
Phyllis: I’d forgotten how cool this place is in the summer. It’s great. Hot guy.
Summer: Don’t get any ideas, mom.
Phyllis: Oh, I’m doing that. He’s not my type.
Summer: I’m talking about putting a rooftop pool in the grand phoenix. You can’t afford the expenditure.
Phyllis: Well, I mean, I’m not thinking of that. You know, I have other plans for the grand phoenix.
Summer: What do you mean?
Phyllis: We’ll get into that later. Anyway, I want to talk about you. It’s already been a stressful day for you.
[ Sighs ] Breaking the news about ashland to harrison.
Summer: We talked about it earlier. I’m okay. I mean, harrison is doing as well as can be expected.
Phyllis: Yeah. Well, you have to protect that little boy. You have to. I mean, the media is gonna come down on ashland really, really hard. You know that. Saying things like millionaire died in shame, he faked cancer, the locke ness monster has finally gone — things like that. They’re gonna want quotes from harrison’s parents. You know? I mean, honestly, all hell is gonna break loose.
Chloe: Blech.
Sally: What’s wrong?
Chloe: All of these people.
Sally: What people are you talking about? Hopefully no one whose name is on the building because they sign our checks.
Chloe: You know, as a rule, I am generally irritated by most of the newmans, but in this moment, I am specifically irritated by all of these national media parasites who just want to get the scoop on ashland locke’s death. Vultures.
Sally: Chloe, you do realize that we’re a part of the national media, right? So are you calling us vultures?
Chloe: No, no. I’m talking about all of the reporters who have come into town, who are trying to uncover some angle that no one else has found.
Sally: They’re not evil. They’re just trafficking in the most valuable commodity of the day — information. All of their platforms are covering ashland’s death, and they need to find an angle.
Chloe: Well, I doubt they’re gonna find out that nick punched ashland at victoria’s house the night that locke died.
Sally: What did you just say? Their confrontation got physical?
Nick: [ Sighs ] Hey, thanks for meeting me.
Sharon: Sure. What’s going on?
Nick: I just had to get out of the office. It’s crazy there with the news of ashland’s death out.
Sharon: Well, I’ve noticed that not all of the news is out. There’s been no mention of what happened at victoria’s house before the accident.
Nick: That’s the police department’s call. I’m sure they don’t want to release any more information than they have to. It doesn’t change the way this is hitting me.
Sharon: Are you still blaming yourself?
Nick: It’s hard not to. Whatever happened in that car that forced ashland to drive off the road, I feel responsible, like this is all my fault.
Sharon: Have you talked to victor again?
Nick: No. It’s driving me crazy wondering if my father’s lying to my face. She’s feeling the power of listerine.

Amanda: What was that all about?
Nate: I’m sorry. I’ve got reporters hounding me.
Devon: About chancellor-winters?
Nate: No, ashland locke. They want a statement about his fatal car accident from, you guessed it, his best man.
Amanda: Don’t they know that the two of you aren’t friends anymore?
Nate: No, and I don’t want them to find out how he played me for a fool.
Devon: Nobody thinks that.
Nate: Well, the whole world will if journalists find out that I was his unwitting accomplice in his cancer scam. Guess it’s a good thing I left medicine. No one would ever trust me to make another diagnosis ever again.
Devon: It’s not like you were his doctor or his oncologist.
Nate: But it makes me look like I have terrible judgment. Look, I hate to think this way, but if my history with ashland becomes a part of the coverage of his death, it could make chancellor-winters look bad.
Amanda: I don’t think you need to worry about that. Okay? “The grinning soul” already exposed that ashland was lying about his cancer, and that is our series, so your name will not be mentioned. Besides, all anyone cares about right now is how ashland died. And you have nothing to do with that.
Devon: Despite how everything turned out between the two of you, I’m sure it still came as a shock to see that he died.
Nate: I’m a physician. I value human life more than anything. This is no different.
Devon: Well, still, if it becomes more of an issue for you, you know that you can take some personal time.
Nate: No, I just — just need to turn off my phone. I’m sorry the man’s dead, if for no other reason than he has a kid. But I don’t mourn him. All I want right now is for us to get past our disagreement and get down to work.
Devon: Okay, well, fair enough. Did you get lily and billy’s e-mail?
Nate: Yeah, it looks like they’re crushing it in L.A.
Devon: Yeah.
Amanda: Yeah, I mean, that is one good thing about being irrationally overconfident like billy is, he can get you into every room in front of every media powerhouse.
Devon: This is very true. I think it’s fantastic we’re getting coverage and exposure for the company on the west coast.
Nate: I completely agree. I’m on board with every decision they’ve made.
Amanda: Well, I love seeing the two of you on the same page, and speaking about things that we agree on, have you had a chance to talk to newman legal about getting elena out of her contract?
Nate: When I spoke to imani earlier, she said she forwarded the files to you. Did you not get them?
Amanda: Wait, you spoke to imani? You’re in touch with imani about this?
Summer: The press has been an absolute nightmare already. It’s very clear that they’re not gonna be letting us get over the shock of ashland’s death any time soon. I just hope that they move on from talking about his heir apparent. But in the meantime, the abbotts are doing a good job of keeping all of the reporters far away from harrison. But we do have other concerns.
Phyllis: Like what?
Summer: Well, nobody is stepping forward to claim ashland’s body, which means that kyle and i might have to be the ones to arrange a funeral, just for harrison’s sake. I mean, it would be the respectful thing to do.
Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, not that ashland deserves any respect, but…
Summer: No. But harrison does.
Phyllis: Yeah.
Summer: I just feel like when he’s older, it would be good for him to know that the man he called father was properly laid to rest.
Phyllis: Yeah. Hmm. It’d be sort of like diane’s funeral. You know that? Not a tear was shed. Hey, and it turns out we didn’t even need a funeral because she wasn’t even dead. Ha.
Summer: Mom, you realize you just turn this conversation to diane, right?
Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. Hey, but I want you to know that I’m impressed with you, how you’re stepping up and being such a good mom to harrison. I am really, really proud of you.
Summer: Thank you. It hasn’t been easy, but…
[ Sighs ] I’m just trying my best. Yeah, just today harrison was playing, and he would look up and just ask a heartbreaking question, like, “is father never coming back?” Or “do you think that father has friends in heaven?”
Phyllis: Oh, wow.
Summer: What do you even say to that?
Phyllis: I don’t know. What did you say?
Summer: We said that, you know, father loved him very much and that we love him very much. Just tried to reassure him, and then he would go back to playing. But I can tell that he is really affected by all of this.
Phyllis: Yeah. Poor kid.
Summer: [ Sighs ] We just all have to be there for him. All of us. Grandpa jack, you, the abbotts.
Phyllis: Yeah. And not diane.
Summer: Mom.
Phyllis: No, I mean it. Not diane. She’s on my mind, summer.
Summer: Is this because of the run-in earlier today with her and jack in the park?
Chloe: It’s true. Nick clocked ashland the night he died. Probably not long before the accident.
Sally: And this was at victoria’s house?
Chloe: Exactly.
Sally: What was ashland doing there?
Chloe: I don’t really know. I just know that it got really heated between ashland and victoria, so nick had to step in.
Sally: Wow. And you found this out from your trusted source that rhymes with “fleven.”
Chloe: You know there are actual words that rhyme with his name. You don’t have to make up something.
Sally: Yeah, but it’s more fun to say fleven. So what else did kevin tell you?
Chloe: That’s all, and I just thought I should mention it because we work at newman, and, you know, there could be some blowback. I know it goes without saying that this just stays between us. But it did seem like you knew about nick and ashland having an argument. How?
Sally: Nick told me, but he obviously left out something important. This fight isn’t public knowledge. Yet.
Chloe: Well, I don’t think he has anything to worry about, even if they do find out. If half of the stories about ashland locke are true, it sounds like he deserved a sock in the jaw. No one could blame nick.
Sharon: I wish I could say, “don’t worry, your father wouldn’t lie or manipulate a situation like this.”
Nick: But you know better.
Sharon: Exactly. It’s entirely possible that victor is pulling all kinds of strings, not telling the truth to you or the rest of the family. He’s been known to go to extremes when it comes to his children.
Nick: There’s certainly precedent for this particular situation, as you know.
Sharon: You mean when adam was a boy in kansas and he accidentally killed that man on the farm? Victor did what he thought was best and he covered it up, but it came back to haunt adam. He still has psychic scars.
Nick: Well, I’m no scared little boy. I’m not gonna let history repeat itself in any way, shape, or form. The truth will come out. It always does. (Vo) red lobster’s seafood summerfest is fire!
Nate: I’m not sure what you’re trying to imply, amanda.
Amanda: I’m just saying that I didn’t know that you were in touch with imani regarding this.
Nate: I told you I would reach out about elena’s contract.
Amanda: Yes, but I assumed that you’d reach out to newman media, not my sister. Nate, I can pick up the phone and call my sister myself.
Nate: I realize that, but i was already in touch with imani about your mom’s rehab facility. I had some thoughts on it. Then we started talking about elena’s contract. That’s all it was.
Devon: The facility was really nice, by the way. Naya’s settled in well.
Nate: Good.
Amanda: Thank you for that recommendation. I really appreciate it. And I will take a look at the documents that imani sent me, and I’ll be in touch regarding next steps for elena’s contract.
Devon: Alright, cool. Moving on. What is the pr team doing about our double-booking issue?
Nate: They’re taking care of it.
Devon: Yes, I know that they’re taking care of it, but we’re having this meeting so you can tell me exactly how they’re gonna fix the problem and what you’re gonna do to make sure that nothing like this happens again.
Chloe: Okay, so we can save 10% with a new server and get 20% more capacity.
Sally: I like the sound of that.
Chloe: Plus, the server rooms are located in four different locations across the western hemisphere.
Sally: And that’s good?
Chloe: Yeah, it just means that if there’s an interruption, then we have three backups.
Sally: I see. Well, run it by legal and make the deal.
Chloe: Okay, I’ll get to it today.
Sally: We might need those extra servers if we can break a huge story like the circumstances surrounding locke’s death. I mean, why hasn’t it been revealed that ashland was a victoria’s house that night? All the media is reporting right now is it is a fatal one-car accident.
Chloe: Well, it’s quite possible that whatever went down between locke and the newman siblings has nothing to do with the accident.
Sally: Yeah, but if anything, it speaks to locke’s state of mind, why he was so distracted while he was driving that he ended up in a ravine.
Chloe: Well, don’t forget about that crazy windstorm. Maybe that played a part.
Sally: But how come there weren’t a bunch of serious accidents last night?
Chloe: That’s a really good point. Maybe there was some sort of mechanical issue.
Sally: Yeah, but I feel like that would be really easy to figure out and something the gcpd would want to issue a statement about to quash speculation.
Chloe: Yeah, I suppose.
Sally: So everything we know points to the fact that this is more than just an ordinary accident. Did the newmans convince the police to keep quiet?
Chloe: I doubt it. Chance is the lead detective, and it’s not his style.
Sally: Chance, the detective married to abby newman?
Chloe: Yeah, he’s kind of a boy scout. He can’t be pressured.
Sally: Okay, so then what’s the deal? Isn’t what happened before the accident critical information? Shouldn’t the public have a right to know?
Chloe: I’d imagine that the police have a lid on it because it’s still an open investigation.
Sally: Yeah, but why is that? One-car accident, what is there to investigate? I’m telling you, there’s something else at play here.
Chloe: Okay, so what do you want to do about it?
Sally: [ Sighs ] I don’t know. I told nick that I would only publish the facts, but now that I have this information, how can we not put it out there?
Chloe: Okay. I don’t know where you’re going with this, but I feel like I’m obligated to remind you that we have to be very, very careful with this.
Sally: Of course. I am nothing if not careful.
Chloe: [ Chuckles ] I would say the exact opposite is true.
Sally: Okay, maybe the old me, but I am learning.
Chloe: Okay. My due diligence is done here. You’ve been warned. I am going to get this done and talk to legal.
Nick: I mean, the fact that I’m questioning what really happened that night shows how messed up this whole situation is.
Sharon: You need to find a way to get closure.
Nick: I just can’t shake this feeling that dad is up to his old tricks. I can read him too well. I know there’s more going on here.
Sharon: Victor may mean well, but making you question your own reality, that is not helpful. What if the official version of the story is true? Ashland wasn’t dead. He got up. He went to his car and drove off and he crashed into that ravine.
Nick: I really hope that’s what happened. But even the police are questioning that story.
Sharon: Why do you say that?
Nick: I talked to chance again. He had a lot of questions.
Sharon: Well, have they determined the cause of death yet? Because I know it took a while for them to discover that rey died of a heart attack that night that he was driving, and maybe this is a similar situation. Ashland was known to have heart issues.
Nick: I think what happened to rey was a one-in-a-million occurrence. I highly doubt that’s what happened here. But that’s the thing, we don’t know anything. If the police know more, they’re not sharing it. Chance isn’t being very forthcoming. But I can tell, he is suspicious about the whole chain of events.
[ Cellphone chimes ]
Sharon: Is it the police?
Nick: No. It’s just somebody else digging for answers. Facing expensive vitamin c creams with dull results?
Phyllis: This, she is almost all ice. Crazy. I’m gonna go refresh this.
Summer: Wait, mom. Chill out. Somebody is gonna be around to refresh your drink. Are you trying to avoid talking about seeing jack and diane in the park?
Phyllis: Why would you think that?
Summer: It’s a little concerning that you don’t even want to discuss it.
Phyllis: You think because i want to refresh my drink, I don’t want to discuss jack and diane?
Summer: You told me that jack admitted that he was still in love with you, no matter how complicated it is.
Phyllis: Yeah, yeah.
Summer: Okay, and then he walked up on you and diane at each other’s throats in the park.
Phyllis: Right. He did that, and he acted exactly how I would think he’d act.
Summer: It’s just bad timing.
Phyllis: Oh. Yeah, right. Bad timing for me, for sure. Great timing for diane on the other hand.
Summer: I don’t think she set you up. I mean, there was no way that she could have known you were there. I didn’t mention that I was meeting you there.
Phyllis: Okay, maybe diane didn’t set the trap this time, but she took advantage of the situation knowing that jack was there in the park.
Summer: Okay, but what about after diane left? What happened between you and jack?
Phyllis: Oh. Nothing. I don’t want to get into it with you.
Summer: Mom.
Phyllis: No.
Summer: Come on.
Phyllis: Seriously, no. You have bigger problems right now with harrison. Alright? I don’t want to burden you with mine. You know, besides, there’s something else I want to get into with you.
Summer: Okay. What’s that?
Phyllis: Me working at marchetti. Right? I mean, let’s talk about that. Did you bring it up to kyle? Let’s do this.
Sharon: Who was it?
Nick: I don’t want to drag you into this more than i already have.
Sharon: You’re not dragging me into anything. I’m asking. I want to help.
Nick: Just let me get some more answers myself. We’ll definitely talk again.
Sharon: Okay, I understand if this is something that you need to handle on your own.
Nick: Yeah, this is in the solo category, but I really appreciate it.
Sharon: Well, I’ll be here when you’re ready to talk. I mean it.
Nick: I know you do. I know those just aren’t words. You really want to help. Thanks for always being here for me.
Sharon: Always.
Nate: I didn’t realize I was being micromanaged.
Devon: How is me asking you a question micromanaging you?
Nate: It sounded like you doubted I was on top of the situation.
Amanda: It sounds like the two of you still have a lot to work out, so I’m gonna step out, take care of a few things. I’ll meet you back at the office, okay?
Devon: Okay.
Devon: Do you have a problem?
Nate: I’m just trying to do my job. The one you hired me to do.
Devon: Okay. So then why can’t I ask you a question about this job that I hired you to do? You thought that an artist could replace tessa. He was already booked on the same date. It’s a classic double booking, and I want to know the details of what our pr team is gonna do to fix this problem.
Nate: Just by asking the question, you make it seem like I’m not taking care of it.
Devon: If I didn’t think you were taking care of it, I’d just say that to you.
Nate: You delegated the authority to fix the problem to me.
Devon: That’s right, I did. But I’m not just gonna ignore the problem and act like it doesn’t exist. This is my job. Do you never ask another doctor about their patients?
Nate: All the time.
Devon: Okay.
Nate: But I didn’t pester them. I didn’t jump into the middle of their surgeries.
Devon: This is the first time I’m asking you a question about this. So if there’s a bigger problem here, you can tell me so I can help you fix it.
Nate: Oh, now I need help. And maybe even another mentor. Again.
Devon: I didn’t bring that up again, you did. But why are you taking this so personally?
Nate: How else am I supposed to take it?
Devon: Wow. Hey… you know, I think that I — I have an idea of what’s going on here with you. I think that you — you’re overreacting to all these questions because maybe in some way you’re second-guessing this career change. Hi, I’m karen.
“The young and the restless”
will continue.
[Sfx: Buzzing ] This is pretection
Nate: I’m not insecure about my decision to switch careers. I was a surgeon who couldn’t perform surgery anymore. I needed the change.
Devon: Well, you’re just being really sensitive about a lot of suggestions, man.
Nate: You keep saying I’m taking things the wrong way. I know what it means when someone says you need a watchdog to look over your shoulder.
Devon: That’s not what i think. Okay? This is a crucial time for our company. Everyone’s watching to see if this merger is gonna work, and we need to be sharp.
Nate: I know this.
Devon: Good. I’m glad you do, because I have a lot invested in this company succeeding.
Nate: So do I.
Devon: It’s a little bit different, though.
Nate: I realize you have a lot of money in play. I’m not trying to hurt the company. I’m trying to add value.
Devon: Yeah, I know that you’re trying to do that. I understand it, but you’re new to the business world. You’re out of your element. And it takes time and it takes learning. And I know the feeling of making a sharp turn with your career. I did the same thing with music, but I found my path and I’m trying to do the same thing for you by giving you this opportunity.
Nate: But it feels like you keep stifling me. You’re used to calling all the shots, and it sounds like you want it to stay that way.
Devon: Okay, that’s not the case. I’m sorry you feel like that, but I’m not gonna argue with you. I will say, though, that the idea of having a mentor — not me, but somebody — is not a bad one. Or at least getting some media
Nate: Media training. You know what? Elena’s back from her trip. I’m gonna go home and spend some time with her.
Summer: [ Sighs ] Like you pointed out, we have a traumatic situation going on right now. I just don’t think it’s the right time to broach the subject of you coming to work for marchetti to kyle.
Phyllis: Okay. Alright. Well, I’m really excited. I mean, look at me. I have so much enthusiasm, and I’m wearing marchetti.
Summer: I noticed, and I appreciate it, but there’s just a lot going on, and I don’t think that kyle would be receptive to it right now. Let’s just give it some time.
Phyllis: Sure, sure. I mean, when you talk to kyle, make sure you include that I have a tremendous work ethic, if he doesn’t already know that. I get things done. And that’s what you need at marchetti for sure, right? And…
[ Sighs ] I may be selling the grand phoenix.
Summer: What? Is that what you were alluding to?
Phyllis: Uh, part of it, yeah. It’s part of it.
Summer: Wait, I don’t get it. The grand phoenix is your baby.
Phyllis: Yeah, I know. This is the thing, lily winters came to me. She wanted to buy it for chancellor-winters, and her offer was more than generous.
Summer: I guess I can see how that would be persuasive.
Phyllis: Yeah, I mean, it was a good deal for her, a good deal for me. Great deal for marchetti. Maybe it’s just meant to be.
Summer: I’m just surprised. I know how much the hotel means to you.
Phyllis: You mean more to me.
[ Cellphone vibrates ]
[ Knock on door ]
Nick: What was that message about?
Sally: That was fast. Which means it must be more than a rumor.
Nick: Where did you get your information?
Sally: That your confrontation with ashland got physical, that you punched him? We have a lot of reliable sources here at newman media.
Nick: [ Sighs ] Does newman media want to kn odo
Sally: We’re one and the same.
Nick: I don’t know where you’re going with this. I already told you the other night I got into a confrontation with ashland.
Sally: Yes, but clearly there is more to it. You hit him. Why? And why was ashland at victoria’s house? Was he invited? Did he break in? And how exactly do you figure into all of this? We really had our hands full with our two-year-old.
Devon: Hey.
Amanda: Hey. Oh, no. Judging by that face, things didn’t go very well with nate, huh?
Devon: No. No, they did not. He’s just — he’s just too damn sensitive to talk to right now. Every time I ask him a question, he says I’m micromanaging him.
Amanda: Will the dynamic between the two of you ever be fixed?
Devon: That’s a good question. I don’t know. Things only got worse after you got up and left. I don’t know, I just think that maybe I may have pulled nate into this business world too fast for his own good.
Sharon: Hey, nate. Is everything okay?
Nate: It will be once I get home to elena. Could I get a couple of coffees to go?
Sharon: Sure.
Nate: Thank you.
Sharon: I hope elena stops in here sometime soon. Be nice to see her again.
Nate: She will. You can count on it.
Sharon: Well, I’m glad to hear that she’s home. You must be looking forward to seeing her.
Nate: Actually, I already did. But I cut our reunion short so I could get back to work. Big mistake.
Summer: Back in milan, I loved the idea of working with you. It could be so fun.
Phyllis: Oh, and so productive.
Summer: I totally agree. But I think I know what kyle’s objection might be.
Phyllis: What?
Summer: Diane?
Phyllis: Diane. Come on. I’m not even gonna see diane. We won’t even cross paths.
Summer: But you keep on bringing her up.
Phyllis: Listen, I’m not gonna let diane jeopardize my relationship with you.
Summer: I hear you, but kyle might not. He might even think that you want to come work for marchetti because of diane.
Phyllis: That’s ridiculous. I mean, I don’t even like that woman.
Summer: Believe me, I know. But he might be a little suspicious of this sudden career change.
Phyllis: Why? I’ve done so many things. So many. I’m like a jack of all trades. I have a restless spirit, you know? Besides, kyle gets to work with his dad and his mom. Kyle gets to do that. I mean, the newmans all work together. The winters work together. I want to work with my family. I want that, summer. I need to work with my daughter.
[ Cellphone vibrates ]
Summer: Mom, somebody’s trying to get in touch with you.
Nick: Alright, you need to slow down.
Sally: I hope I didn’t bombard you with too many questions. You can speak to one of newman media’s reporters, if you’d prefer.
Nick: I wld w w w wrefer that, thank you.
Sally: Are you regretting that you convinced me to stay on?
Nick:’M’met’m’m’m’mhe’m’m’m’m listen, I need you to stop making assumptions for one second and just listen. Okay?
Sally: Okay.
Nick: The reason I punched ashland — and your source was right, that did happen — was because he was getting violent with my sister, and I needed to step in and stop it.
Sally: Of course you would stand up for your sister. I always fantasized about having a brother to defend me.
Nick: Well, I will always have victoria’s back.
Sally: So then what happened? Ashland, not wanting to get into a bigger fight with you, drove off?
Nick: Not exactly.
Sally: Okay, things are getting a little murky again.
Nick: I have no idea how the crash happened. All I know is later that night, ashland was found in his car at the bottom of a ravine and pronounced dead on site.
Sally: Great. I mean, not great that he’s dead, but great that those are the facts because no one else has them. So newman media can beat every other outlet to the punch. No pun intended.
Nick: I don’t think that’s a good idea.
Sally: Chanccomm wracked up huge numbers covering ashland. And chancellor-winters, they’re gonna do the same thing. We are the only company with the inside scoop. We know what really happened, so we can out-scoop them all and publish the story of the final night of ashland locke’s life. I was taking my antidepressant daily,
Nate: Yeah, maybe it was a mistake to bring nate in in such a high-level position instead of letting him start off slowly.
Amanda: He was the chief of surgery. You needed to offer him a senior position to make it worth his while.
Devon: I know, but just the fact that it’s such a big career change, I should have known that there was gonna be issues in the beginning.
Amanda: Maybe. But you did acknowledge that it would take time to ease him into this job.
Devon: Well, he doesn’t think he needs any time.
Amanda: Maybe he needs a little guidance.
Devon: Oh, he doesn’t want that either. And I don’t have time to be a guide for him. I was lucky enough to have neil. Nate doesn’t have anybody like that.
Amanda: Devon, I really think that this is just a learning curve. And despite what nate said about being okay, I think that ashland’s death rattled him.
Devon: Yeah. That might be the case, but things weren’t exactly smooth sailing before ashland died.
Amanda: Okay, well, what do you want to do about it?
Devon: I don’t know. I really don’T. Because the whole point of this company was for it to be a cohesive family working situation. And I don’t know if we can ever get it to that.
Sharon: Two coffees to go.
Nate: Thank you very much, sharon.
[ Cellphone chimes ]
[ Cellphone rings ] Hello, imani? Hey, how’s everything going? Oh, well, that’s good. Thank you for sending those files over to amanda. But you shouldn’t be working, remember? Your mom needs — she’s sleeping.
[ Chuckles ] Oh, you called because you want some company. Well, okay, well, I will try to keep you as entertained as possible.
Phyllis: By the way, all those texts, that was about our freight elevator. They needed my permission to call a repairman, blah, blah, blah. Hey, those are situations and problems that I will not miss.
[ Sighs ]
Summer: You know we have elevators in the jabot building, too, right?
Phyllis: Yeah, but it’s not my issue. Somebody else has to deal with it. And I take the stairs anyway. Honestly, summer, do you think it’s a possibility, my working at marchetti?
Summer: Definitely. I’m gonna talk to kyle soon, when the time is right.
Phyllis: Ah! Thank you, summer. Thank you.
Summer: No guarantees, though.
Phyllis: Of course. Of course. I mean, you make your decision, and no hurt feelings. No problem. But it would be pretty great, the two of us working at marchetti together.
Summer: It would be kind of amazing. And I know that you would do an awesome job.
Phyllis: Oh, I’d do an amazing job. I mean, it would be unforgettable, what we could do together. I mean, life-changing.
Nick: I can understand the value of beating the competition to a story, but I’m still reeling from this. Ashland was getting violent with my sister. He wouldn’t let her walk away, so I had to step in.
Sally: I’m sorry.
Nick: No, it’s — it’s way harder on victoria. He was terrible to her. And if the story follows her, then the torture continues. Do you understand what I’m saying?
Sally: So you don’t want me to cover it? Look, I have to admit, I didn’t want to start my leadership here at newman media this way, covering a big, juicy story about the newmans. But if we don’t get out ahead of it, someone else will. And then it looks like we don’t know what we’re doing or we’re covering something up. And I don’t want to start my tenure here at newman media that way either.
Nick: I understand. The story’s in your hands, sally. What are you gonna do with it?
