THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[ Crickets chirping ] [ Footsteps approach ] You couldn’t sleep either? Hmm. Feeling a little restless. [ Sighs ] Maybe it’s the crickets. Maybe I’m still keyed up after Willow’s party. That’ll do it. Or maybe… …It’s you.

Oh, the champagne is lovely. It’s not really necessary, though. Unnecessary champagne? There is no such thing. Okay, maybe not the champagne, but the apology. Also not unnecessary. I invite you to dinner at my house. And when you accept, I bail. You had good reason. Being called out of town on business is a reason. It’s not an excuse. [ Glasses clink ] Putting out fires. You know. There’s always something burning at ELQ. [ Clears throat ] I don’t think I’m going to hold one missed dinner date against you. Business is business, right? But… But what? Well, it does cast doubt on your claim that you can compartmentalize your life. I’m still getting the hang of it.

Good news, Morgan. You’re finally a free man. I know who’s running Pikeman. Who? Anna Devane. Not possible. But it is. And I’ve got proof. Thank you! Amazing as always! Sam! Hey. Oh. Were you hoping to catch the tail end of Willow’s party? Because you’re a little late. No, I-I can see that. It’s actually like it never happened. Yeah. It was fabulous. Well, mostly. I’m sorry that you and Dante missed it. Yeah. Dante had to work. And Danny was gonna go out with some of his friends, and I wanted to stay home and just be clearheaded in case he needed me. Oh. Did he need you? Not tonight. So Danny’s at home? Yeah. With Scout and Rocco. And you’re here. I am. Um… I wanted to ask you… mother to mother… to help my son.

Oh, here is hoping this umpteenth revision is the charm. Because every time we put Blaze’s contract in front of Natalia, she picks up her nasty, little pen, and she has to cross everything out, doesn’t she? But no, no, no. That’s not what I said. That’s it. That’s — Exactly. You’re right. That’s what she does. She says, “Oh, that’s not what I want. That’s not good enough.” Well, when we give her exactly what she does want, then she finds something else new that she doesn’t like. Uh-huh. All these attempts and quibbles and concessions. We are absolutely bending over backwards for that woman. And still no final contract. Right! You know what I think, though? I think you kind of like that because you are loving all these billable hours. Lucy, working with you is enough for me. Hm! “With” me. Don’t you mean “for”? Well, kind of a collaboration. See, that’s the way I see it. This is a big collaboration, right? Ah. I see. So I’m a great big collaborator, right? Yeah. Yeah. Nice. So that means you aren’t gonna charge me. Yeah. Yeah. I wouldn’t go that far. Okay. You want me to help Danny? I’m guessing this has something to do with Jason. Um… yes, I-I do. And Jason poses a physical danger to Danny. Sam. Come on! I’m just afraid — What, that Jason’s some kind of a bad influence? No, I wasn’t gonna say it like that. I mean, but Jason would never let anything — Can you — Can you just hear me out for a second, please? Fine. Sorry. When Jason came back after he was shot, you remember that? I do. Vividly. Yes. Okay, well, he was held up at the Q’s boathouse, and Danny accidentally found him there, and Jason got him to help him. Yeah, Danny is Jason’s son, and Jason had a bullet wound. Exactly! What son should be helping their father with a gunshot wound?! And to make matters worse, Jason had asked Danny to promise him not to tell me. Now, if you were in my place and Jason did that to one of your kids, how would that make you feel? If it were anyone else, I’d be furious. But I trust Jason. I do, Sam. He’s always thinking ahead. Jason always has a reason. I might not like it, but I have to trust it. Jason would never let any harm come to our kids. In his line of work, that’s always gonna happen. It’s his line of work. It’s his lifestyle, Carly. What do you mean, his lifestyle? He — He follows danger. He can’t stay away from it. He doesn’t even try! Okay, listen — Jason is the last person that can guarantee Danny’s safety. He would take a bullet for any of us, Sam! He has! I know that sounds heroic to you, Carly, but have you ever asked yourself why any of us would be in the line of fire in the first place? Okay. That’s a figure of speech. Alright? Not where Jason’s concerned. Look. I-I get it. Your loyalty to Jason comes first, last, and always. But I am asking you… as a friend. Are we? Friends? Because we’ve been going back and forth a lot lately. Can you just accept that I feel differently about this than you do? And my concerns are real? And help me? I got a warrant for Anna’s personal e-mail account. Found e-mails with Jack Brennan dating back five years. And now that you have this proof, you can shut Pikeman down? Absolutely. Well, soon. Then you don’t need me anymore. If you’d wanted to re-invite me to dinner, you could have just called. I could have, yeah. Or e-mailed or text. Next time I’ll send a singing telegram. Oh, good! Who doesn’t love a singing telegram? The problem with those methods of communication… they’re from a distance.

I like to be next to you. In the same room. In the same space. If you hadn’t noticed. No, I noticed. Yes. So that’s a “yes” to dinner? Oh, well, I don’t know. I mean, that’s — that’s really up to you, if you can pull it off because you’re a very busy man. You’ll always be my priority. Over what? Other than Charlotte, there’s nothing more important to me. Certainly not business. So you would choose me over corporate raiding and profiteering and whatever other nefarious schemes you’ve got going? No contest.

All flirting aside — No. No flirting aside. It’s perfect right where it is. I just… Should we be playing at this? Are we playing? Yes, we are. The two of us know — we both know — that the — this didn’t work for a reason. I’m just wondering if this is wise. I don’t know if it’s wise. It’s not something I would change.

If I’m hearing you correctly, you’re — you’re telling me that I keep you up at night? Well, you were on my mind. What was I wearing? Not like that. I was thinking about… your smile. Well, it’s only fair. I do think about your smile, too. And how sad it seems sometimes. Okay. Well… this took a decidedly non-sexy turn. Not all of the time. Just — Just after… After what? What’s before? When James comes over for his riding lesson or when you’re up at the house and Leo and Wiley are grilling you about something. I even noticed it tonight at Willow’s party. You are all smiles until there’s a breather. And then it goes away. Not all the way, but… In your eyes. You seem… Content? Lonely. A-And I can’t figure out why. The kids adore you. T-The grown-ups have come to really respect you. [ Chuckles ] Alright, I mean, t-that’s a bit of a stretch. They trust you with their children. Even Tracy seems to rely on you. Yeah, when it comes to her horse. I think it’s because you are surrounded by families but you don’t have one. Except, of course, the one you — you do actually belong to… who don’t know that you’re one of them. It’s, uh — It’s true. Big part of me wants to just come clean. Now, what’s stopping you? Well, for one, Mac’s still out of town. And I really — I don’t know how I admit to him, admit to his whole family… Your whole family. …that I lied to them in the first place. And it wasn’t for some noble cause. I lied to protect myself from getting arrested and prosecuted because I tried to defraud someone. Okay. Worst case scenario. Mac and the rest are disappointed, angry, even. How long do you think that’ll last? I don’t — I don’t really want to find out. I guess that’s — that’s why. Yeah, I mean, I kind of miss him, but a big part of me is relieved that Mac’s still gone because as long as he’s away, I don’t have to decide. Yes, I know that makes me a coward. Or… Or — Please. Please. Give me more options. ‘Cause I really don’t want “coward” to be the only explanation. I think that sometimes we get comfortable in our own discomfort, living without the thing that’s missing… even though it’s what we really need.

So what do we do? How do we move forward? Well… if what you are doing isn’t working… …try something new. I need you to ask Jason to leave Danny alone. Define “alone.” Keep his distance. Stay away. Okay. Alright. L-Let’s say I could get Jason to keep his distance. Why would you do that to Danny? Because I have to. Sam, I don’t know Danny very well, but I have talked to him. About Jason? Yes. And he adores him. He’s just like him, Sam. Yeah, I know Carly! And that is the problem! But Danny doesn’t have any idea how dangerous Jason’s life is. Danny just thinks that his father is smart and cool and that he gets him. Is that such a bad thing? Not many sons have fathers who understand them. Danny wants to be just like Jason, and that is the worst… possible thing that can happen to him. Let me make you dinner tomorrow night. How can I say no? I’m gonna do everything in my power to make sure you don’t want to. See you tomorrow. Anna: Wa– I didn’t say yes. I like my chances.

[ Door closes ] E-mails are only circumstantial. They set meetings and referred to “matters previously discussed,” but there are no details and there’s no direct mention of Pikeman. So you got nothing. What is clear is that Anna and Brennan are collaborators. It’s a logical assumption that with Brennan out of commission, Anna’s running the show. And she’s been using this so-called joint investigation to point me in the wrong direction. Clearly somebody is. I should have seen it sooner. I put too much faith in our history, of my brother’s connection with Robin. But now I realize — from the very moment I caught her and Jordan in that arms dealer’s motel room, Anna’s been obstructing me at every turn. In what way? By keeping me out of the loop and away from the evidence, which, if she’s running Pikeman, which she is, makes sense. But she seems to trust you. So I need you to do it. Do what exactly? Get me clear, incontrovertible proof of a connection between Anna, Brennan, and Pikeman.

Okay. Okay? Just like that? The sooner I get out from under the FBI, the better. Well, then, let me be clear. If you warn Anna and she’s able to cover her tracks… Carly goes to prison. I think the reason that Natalia really bothers me is just ’cause she’s so damn smart, you know? Hmm! She’s diligent. She’s organized. And she is laser-focused on wringing every advantage for that daughter of hers. Hmm. Boy. I wish she could work for Deception. It would be so much better than her working against us. Because right now she has us up against that clock. You know? She knows we’ve got to formalize that contract before we can launch our big PR campaign with Blaze. Hallelujah! I think I just found something that may work! How’d you know I was here? You weren’t in your room, so I figured I’d check by the water. You went up to my room? Yeah. To find me? It is where you live. Why? Maybe… you’re not the only one who’s lonely. And maybe… Maybe…? …I wanted to try something new, too.

It’s one thing for Jason to live the life that he does. I don’t want that life for Danny. It’s not like Jason’s gonna recruit Danny into the Mob, Sam. Okay, well, if not that, it’ll be something else, but it will be something dangerous. And — And as a parent, it’s Jason’s job to protect Danny, and he’s not gonna do that unless someone else gets through to him. And it’s not gonna be me. Why? Jason cares about you. But he won’t listen to me, Carly. It has to be you. Do you know what you’re doing?! You’re asking me to ask Jason to break his own heart! To send away a boy who he loves, who needs him. And I get that it’s Jason, right? He can survive anything. But what about Danny? That kind of rejection and abandonment — that is gonna break that kid’s heart! Jason just got back, so it’s probably better to do it now. I get that you think that you’re doing this out of love. You are going to devastate Danny. At least he’s going to be alive! Because Danny is in far more danger around Jason than not. Is that so? Then here’s a question, Sam. If you didn’t want Jason to be your kid’s father, why did you make such a big damn deal about having a baby with him?! Cates came to see me. He thinks you’re running Pikeman. Oh. [ Chuckles ] Damn. Brennan said that this could happen. Yeah. How close are you? With Brennan? I’m not close at all. I mean, I told you that we — we trained together at the WSB, and then we worked this failed op that he sabotaged in order to pocket the money that he needed to create Pikeman. Are you sure it was him? I’m positive. Although, I — I really only have a mention of his name in this mission report that I kept. I mean, it’s not enough to prove anything. Do you two keep in touch? No. I mean, I don’t think I’ve barely seen him in decades until he turned up in Port Charles. Why? Because Cates says you and Brennan have been e-mailing and meeting in secret for the last five years. , there, Counselor. Please — do tell me. What has my genius, very, very sexy shark of a lawyer come up with to solve every single one of my little problems? Well, thank you. However, um… so, I’ve been working on Heather’s case. Heather? Yeah. Yeah. Heather. Yeah. Heather. Oh. Okay. So, you have been working on Heather’s case. So that means none of these hours will be billable to Deception! Well, no. I — And you are gonna pay for the pie and the coffee. And you’re not — not gonna do what you always do — is give me the end-run and put pie and coffee on Deception’s bill. Do you understand? Okay. Fine. Fine! [ Sighs ] Now, can we get back to Heather? Ooh… Heather murdered people with a poisoned hook and she attempted to murder several other people. There are mitigating circumstances. Oh, my God. Now you sound like Laura. You know, but Laura kind of doesn’t surprise me. She’s a goody two-shoes do-gooder. She would do something like this. As appalled as I am, she actually wants to re-open and re-examine Heather’s case, which is exactly the kind of naive, stupid, dumb thing — horrible, horrible thing that good people tend to do. Now, you — you — I expect worse of you, you know? I really, frankly rely on you to be a lesser person. Lucy, this cobalt poisoning is real! There are documented cases! Oh, boy. So you’re telling me that lots of folks that had a bad experience with their hip replacement, they’re all out there. They can be running around just slaughtering people all over the place. There’s proof that a lot of this poisoning has affected people’s behavior. So if I can convince a jury that this cobalt poisoning is what has made Heather so violent… Oh, fine! What — What you’re telling me is she can then get a new trial and then maybe she’ll be released back on the street to kill again? [ Exhales sharply ] It’s just that t-there could be a lot of money in this for — for — for Heather. [ Gasps ] Carly: I don’t get it. I mean, Jason wasn’t even sure he wanted to have a baby with you because of all the reasons you just said. The risk, the danger, and the life he was leading. But that didn’t matter to you. You wanted a baby, so Jason gave in, and you got what you wanted. A beautiful baby boy, one who’s just like Jason! So I’m sorry. You don’t get to change your mind now, Sam! I was in love with him then. Carly, I grew up. And Jason… Jason didn’t turn out to be the man that I thought that he was. He disappeared on us and on — on his children. Not once, but twice. So there it is right there, huh? You’re not doing this to protect Danny. You’re doing it to punish Jason.

Well, I-I haven’t spoken — certainly not e-mailed Brennan for decades. Not until I arrested him in December. Cates pulled e-mails from your personal account. He got a warrant to search my e-mails? That’s what he said. Okay. This is WSB tactic. Okay. So they — they doctor or they forge e-mails and then they plant them in order to divert or incriminate. In this case, both.

Valentin did this. He’s framing you.

[ Violin plucking ] What the… [ Violin plucking ] What the heck is that kid doing there? He was just at — He — Wasn’t he just at Willow’s birthday party? It was open bar! It was fun, frolic. It was really excellent cake. He just figured it was time to practice his violin?! I think Gio is practicing here to not wake anybody up. The estate is roughly the size of Rhode Island. He picks this spot?! [ Violin playing ] Two words for you. Product liability. If Heather’s faulty hip is what caused her behavior, then that company is responsible. Oh. So — Wait, wait, wait. What you’re saying is that Heather may be entitled to “compensation”? Yes, that’s — that’s what I am saying. So all of this pain and suffering and everything that she’s been going through for God knows how many years… it turns out that Heather wasn’t in her right mind. Oh, Heather Webber was never, ever in her right mind. Well, Lucy… you didn’t know her back then. Okay. Wait, wait. All this pain and suffering you’re talking about, all the stress and terrible things, poor Heather… But what about the victims? What about their families? Well, that manufacturer is liable for that! I know you have a soft spot for Heather. I-I get it. Because that union of yours together with Heather all those years ago resulted in a son, a son that you lost. And that son was allegedly not responsible for committing a lot of murders because of a medical condition. Kind of… like mother, like son. Y-Yeah, but those were different circumstances. Yes. Of course, they were. Because the tumor that Franco had was real. When they removed it, he did become sort of a-a decent person, I mean, albeit flawed and a little complicated. Well, thank you for saying that. Okay. But Heather… What if, you know, these homicidal tendencies were because, this last time, of cobalt poisoning. But before her stint as “The Hook,” she did also commit murder. Look. Lucy… Heather did a lot of horrible things in her day. And she had a lot of… half-baked ideas. Kind of… like you back in your day. Did you see any of these e-mails? Do you know what’s in them? No, I didn’t, but according to Cates, there’s nothing really concrete. Just references to meetings and things that you and Brennan discuss. More like that you discuss things, but nothing more specific than that. Okay, so there’s not enough for Cates to build a case against me? Not — Not really. Then Valentin isn’t framing me, per se. He’s using me as a decoy. Are you — Are you making excuses for Valentin? Oh. I don’t know. Maybe. Look. Um… He knows that pointing Cates towards me with no solid evidence to incriminate me — He knows that I can handle it. Doesn’t that bother you? Yes, yes! Of course, it bothers me! Very much. But how I feel is irrelevant. The hard facts are… Valentin loves me. He is just never going to risk anything that could get me sent to prison. But… he’s not above using me as a pawn so that I will get investigated for things that he’s doing while he’s doing them. And that is a win for him. You sound like you understand where he’s coming from maybe a little too well. Maybe I do. Maybe I enjoy outmaneuvering him. Okay. Can we not forget that Cates is a real problem? Yes! But these e-mails, you know, t-they’re only going to keep Cates busy, and it will impede the FBI investigation a bit. And Pikeman will continue as usual. Business as usual. And I’m not in any real danger of being prosecuted because there is no real evidence. Okay, but Cates ordered me to get the evidence he needs to indict you. And if I don’t do it, he’s gonna prosecute Carly. I see. So you are not in any danger right now, but Carly is. So I’m gonna have to tell Cates that Valentin is the head of Pikeman. Hands slam table ] How dare you compare me to Heather! I’m sorry, Lucy. You should be sorry! I shouldn’t have said that. No, you shouldn’t have. Because, granted, I have run some schemes and scams in my life. A lot of them were run with you. Guilty! Right! And I also have to say that Heather proved invaluable when she helped Franco and I escape from Ferncliff. But I certainly have never, ever killed anybody. [ Grumbles ] No, no. Don’t even do that. Victor Jerome drank my locket all by himself. He swallowed that locket, and I did not force him to do that. I-I have never killed anybody, and nor have I ever switched or stolen or did anything to anybody’s babies. Thank you very much. Okay, Lucy, let’s just say you needed a hip replacement, and all of a sudden, you get it and you’re poisoned, and then you start running around doing weird stuff. Would you like to just be written off? Just locked up and nobody help you? No! Of course not! Okay. Okay. Let me ask you this question. Do you really believe that this poison turns you into a completely different person? Or do you think this poison just magnifies the person that you are? Well, that’s a good question. Yes, it is. Because what I’m saying is, if I was a dangerous person like Heather and I had this history of doing horrible things, do you think it would really be fair — All those people I did those horrible things to. Do you think it’d be fair to them if I just all of a sudden go free?! Nobody’s talking about Heather going free. You were just talking about maybe it’s a possibility. Possibility. Everything is a possibility. Okay. Okay. Just — Let’s think about this, shall we? What about the person that murdered your son, that took Franco from you? What if all of a sudden he’s just not responsible for what he did because of a “medical condition”? Do you really believe that’s justice? Is that what you think? Okay, Lucy. You have a point. So just put a hat on and cover it up, will ya? Stop. Listen to me. I get it. You see dollar signs. I love dollar signs. I love them. But you’ve got to let somebody else make bank on this. For me and for you… you gotta steer clear of this one. Maybe you should be charging me. [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Well, maybe I’ll take it out in trade then.

Well, since I’m paying for your pie…

Mmm! Good. [ Violin playing ] Where do you think we fall in the pecking order here? Like, could we go out there and politely ask Gio to leave? We’re staff, and Gio is family, so I think he outranks us. [ Groans ] Yeah, I figured. I just… thought that… you know, maybe you and I were gonna finally… That was the plan. You had a plan? [ Chuckles ] But now Brook Lynn’s cousin is 20 feet away from us.

This is actually pretty nice. Romantic, even. It is that. The private concert just for us. It’s definitely not bad. Maybe even perfect.

I am not trying to punish Jason. I am trying to keep my kids safe. You just accused Jason of disappearing twice. It’s not like he was in the Bahamas, Sam. The first time Jason disappeared, he was shot and nearly died. And the second time, he was taken into custody by the FBI! I know! This is exactly what I’m talking about! This is what happens in Jason’s life. A life you knew about when you chose to be with him! And certainly a life you knew about when you chose to have a baby with him! You don’t get to change your mind now! Of course, I do. Because I don’t want my son — To end up like his father. I know. No! To end up like Morgan! I do not want my son to end up dead!

It isn’t about that. And you know it. Yes, it is. No! No! You’re doing this to Jason because he didn’t “devote his whole life” to you. [ Scoffs ] Oh, yeah. You’re doing this to Jason because he didn’t change everything about who he is to fit into the life that you wanted once you “grew up.” So now you want to take away Jason’s son to punish him. I know I shouldn’t have come to. No! Because you don’t want Jason to change. Because, God forbid, he just might not put you first. But I promise you, if anything happens to my son because his father wouldn’t stay away… you are just as responsible as Jason.

We’ve talked about this. You can’t tell Cates about Valentin because we don’t have the evidence to prove that he’s running Pikeman. And we also don’t trust that Cates will do the job right. He will arrest Valentin prematurely, and then Valentin will skate, and Pikeman will stay in business. And Cates will never let you loose. So, I’m having dinner with Valentin tomorrow at his house. I will get the evidence that we need, and then we will hand that evidence over to Cates. And Valentin will be arrested, and you will get your life back.

Okay. But I want to make something very clear. I will take Valentin down myself… before I let Cates hurt Carly.
