[ Both laugh ] Laura, we are so thrilled to have you back home. Felicia! Not half as thrilled as I am to be home. Well, I am making a new year’s resolution to keep this city as safe as possible, so you have no reason to leave port charles ever again. Mm. Thank you. Well, except for our trip to paris. Oh, yes, our trip to paris with the man I love, ringing in the new year with old friends. I know, this year is shaping up pretty well, I’d say.
[ Laughs ] Anna, where’s your date? Um, yeah, I’m — I’m kind of like cinderella but in reverse. My date left at midnight. Ah, home to relieve the babysitter? You know what? There’s no babysitter. So charlotte, she has a friend over, and she persuaded valentin that they could see in the new year unsupervised, but valentin was like, “12:15, cutoff.” Ah, I remember the first year I was allowed to stay up until new year’s without a sitter. It was such a big deal. It’s such — it’s like a rite of passage, really. Yeah. Well, I’m sorry your date was cut short, but this actually gives me the chance to talk to you. I know I was really hard on you about peter, and…well, that was so last year. Can we have a fresh start? Oh, yes. There’s nothing I’d love more. Mm. Especially now. Peter’s no longer a threat. Yeah. Hopefully, this time next year, it’ll be nothing but a bad memory.
[ Telephone rings in distance ]

[ Monitor beeping, respirator hissing ] Drew? For a moment, I thought, um… hm. Must be the moonlight or, uh… all the midnight mist. Or maybe I just wanted it to be him.

Happy new year. I am so ready to say goodbye to 2021. Oh, my gosh. I want to start this new year with a whole new attitude. I mean, I took on peter and lived to tell about it. Yes, indeed, you have.

[ Scoffs ] So he claims. But to be honest, I’m a lot less worried about my brother than I am about another potential menace who’s very close to home. Victor cassadine. Now, it is true that peter and i did have a business arrangement, but that was long before I was made aware of his many grievous crimes. Save it. I know you were behind my mother’s abduction. [ Monitor beeping, respirator hissing ] I am not a big new year’s guy. I mean, some people just love it. They love to get out there and party, and, I mean, I’ve done my share of that, but more often than not, I just like to keep things kind of quiet. Well, there’s quiet, and then there’s locked in a cell, which is how I spent my last two new years. So this year I, uh… I celebrated by dropping by to visit scout. I brought her a pair of those funny glasses, you know?
[ Chuckles lightly ] It’s just so much more than I could have ever imagined even just six months ago. But little girls go to bed way before midnight, and I didn’t really know what to do with myself, so I came here. Anyway, that’s — that’s me. I’m guessing you’re here because you miss your best friend. If it helps to talk about it, I’M… I’m a pretty good listener. You know this place? No, I can’t say I do. I bought it in 1994. Before that, I lived above… …my nightclub called the paradise. And stone, he was like a little brother to me, and he… he was sick. So I-I wanted to make him feel more comfortable. So I bought him this place and stayed for a couple years, you know? Until I went out by the lake.
[ Voice breaking ] Could not get rid of it. There’s too much history — why am I even telling you this? I should know better. Sonny. Sonny, I’m not your enemy. I swear. I swear to you, I did not know willow was going to testify and say that w– you knew that she overheard us talking about nixon falls and what we were to each other, and you didn’t tell me! Of all the gin joints in the world, you had to walk into mine. Can you believe willow didn’t even call to wish me a happy new year? I’ve been trying the entire year to improve my life. I’ve been staying out of trouble, and you’d think that new year would be the perfect time to cut someone a break, you know? But no, not even a generic text message or a photo of wiley. I got nothing. It’s not like I wanted to get invited to the quartermaines’ mansion to watch football. I don’t even like football. Mm-hmm. I mean, I guess I kind of like the halftime show and the creative commercials. You know, I’m not very sporty, but I think you’re talking about the super bowl. Oh. I’m fine, thank you. You know, all I really care about is being with family. But I guess willow still views me as an embarrassment. My mother, the ex-true believer, the ex-enabler… who can only get a job working with other misfits at a minimum-security prison, so… great. Happy new year to me, right? This is really helpful. Something to do with him getting stabbed at pentonville and coming here for treatment. And then the two of you making a daring escape, going on the run for weeks. Oh, wow, must have been quite an adrenaline rush. That’s none of your business. And then peter put an end to jason. Ah, it’s all so sad, but I had nothing to do with it. I was in wsb custody at the time of the tunnel collapse.
[ Footsteps approaching ] Austin, what’s going on? Are we losing peter? I’d say the opposite. The patient is awake. W– peter’s out of his coma? Rise above? I mean, in case you didn’t notice, I also ended up alone on new year’S. That’s until I ran into you, of course. And even if I could find some sympathetic words to talk you off a ledge, then what about tomorrow or the next day? At some point, you’re gonna have to help yourself, alexis. Okay! Okay, okay. Just trying to do the best I can. Really? I think you maybe came to charlie’s hoping kristina would be working here so that you could put the responsibility on your daughter, that you would have kristina help you and stop you from drinking ’cause you clearly can’t stop yourself. Felicia: I don’t think that we ever stopped being friends. Our friendship just suffered a speed bump in the road. I was terrified for my daughter and desperate to find some way to help find my grandchild. Yeah, I know. And I was the one who let peter get away. I know that you were just giving him a chance to save himself. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And maybe I would have done the same thing if I was in your place, but I’d like to think that I would have given a friend a warning. Yeah. No, I understand that. And, uh, the truth is, I-I gave peter way too many chances. The bottom line is you brought him to justice. But I didn’t do it alone. You know, I had help. I meant what I said about the two of us teaming up to find louise. Well, I am in, whatever it takes.
[ Chuckles ] I’m so pleased to hear you say that. There’s a lead out there, something everyone else has missed. I know the two of us could find it. Are you okay? I think I’m going to ask valentin to meet me for coffee next week. I think we have a little catching up to do. Hmm, to touch base about charlotte or get information about her grandfather? Hm. I was absolutely shocked to find out that valentin is victor’s son, but now that I’ve had a little bit of time to think about it, I think there’s a way to use the relationship to everyone’s advantage. What’s the matter, victor? You were so eager to talk to peter when he was in a coma. Now he’s awake and asking for you. You’re getting cold feet? I don’t think there’s anything to be afraid of. Peter is pretty weak. I don’t think he’s a threat to anyone. Or are you the threat? Well, perhaps I can shake the tree a little, learn something about maxie’s missing child. I’ll give you 10 minutes with peter. I think five ought to do it.
[ Knocks on door ] Austin: Hey, kristina, thanks. That’s probably enough for now.
[ Monitor beeping ] Thank you, doctor. Wow, look at you. Back in the land of the living. You learn that trick from your father?
[ Beeping continues ]
[ Raspy voice ] You betrayed me. Now, to be fair, you betrayed me first. But it’s just business, peter. Nothing personal. But now that I am free, perhaps I can help you. No, actually, I’m the only person in the whole wide world that can. Jason knew the risks. He always did what he felt he had to do. That’s just who jason was. Hmm. I finally got to know him a little bit over there in greece. I told you that… peter was keeping us prisoner, and we were there just chained to a — a wall in a wine cellar. Just talking, you know, like, talking about how to escape, how to bring down peter, how much… we hated the bastard. No, I guess that was actually… that was mostly me, ’cause jason didn’t really waste a lot of breath venting or swearing vengeance. No. That wasn’t his style. At one point, peter made a mistake, uh, that jason had predicted, and — and there we were. We were chained to the wall, and — and jason just kind of smiled. In fact, I think he actually laughed a little bit. I thought I was hallucinating for a second. But he knew — he knew that we had what we needed to bring peter down, and looking back, like — like, that was the moment. In that moment, that was when jason and i became a team. And we did it. We, uh… we stopped peter. At a terrible price.
[ Breathes sharply ] Look, I don’t, um… I-I don’t know what brought you here tonight. It’s none of my business, but if you… if you don’t blame me for jason not being here… …is — is it possible that you blame yourself? After carly left that hearing in pennsylvania, she didn’t stop till she got to a park. I finally caught up with her. And I tried to explain to her.
[ Grunts ]
[ Sighs ] You know what? You’re right. Alcohol does not… do anything to ease the pain. You can’t do it, can you? Do what? Well, you can’t do it even when you’re filled with rage and guilt, and not to mention way too much scotch. You just can’t do it. You can’t betray carly’s trust by talking about her behind her back. I guess you don’t really need any words, sonny. You’re not with carly tonight. That pretty much says it all. You’re here in a place that’s not your home anymore. With a woman… who’s not your wife. I’m sorry. That was a low blow. Yeah, it was. I’m not even sure I understood what you meant. But maybe you do have a point. I mean, there’s a lot of bars I could have gone to. Maybe I did come in here hoping to find my daughter. The reason why I went low is because I don’t trust myself trotting out those high-minded phrases. When I was at dawn of day, I kept shiloh’s book of wisdom at my fingertips ’cause it made me feel powerful, especially with those lost souls who were searching for answers. But those phrases are just… just an illusion. And the reality is I work at spring ridge, mostly listening to prisoners in between doing my grunt work, hoping that one day my daughter will learn to trust me again. It appears that we’re both looking for answers in all the wrong places. Yeah. Perhaps we should just try looking in the mirror. I think victor will be looking to spend more time with valentin, which puts valentin in a very unique position to work him for information. And relay that information to you. Hopefully. I mean, despite his bad character, he’s very devoted to charlotte. And I think that even he will realize that stopping victor is what’s best for charlotte, too. Even so, can you expect one cassadine to turn on another? I know this family very well. I’m counting on it. I’m counting on a more private celebration. Oh? As mayor, your car is on standby. I love that perk.
[ Laughs ] I’m fine now that peter’s out of commission.
[ Cellphone rings ] It’s britt westbourne. Dr. Westbourne, what’s up? Well, medically speaking, I have good news. A patient awoke from a coma. The bad news is that patient is peter august.

will be to maxie. No need. She’s standing beside me. I’ll give her the news and, uh, be there asap. What did britt want? Unfortunately, it’s not good news to welcome in 2022. Mac, what is it? Peter’s awake. I’d laugh if it weren’t too painful. You’re going to help me? Now, it’s — it’s true. A condition of my deal with the wsb was to reveal your whereabouts, but then you’re hardly in a position to afford the luxury of holding a grudge. Why not? Well, because someone obviously wants you dead. They’ve tried once, and most likely they’ll want to finish the job. And you’re going to save me? Let’s say I have resources that could greatly prolong your life expectancy. Now you are gonna want to know what I want in return. Well… it’s not really a question of what, is it? It’s a question of who. I didn’t ask jason to go greece. Britt westbourne did. Although I could have given him a reason to stay here in port charles. What could you have said to jason to make any difference? I know you don’t want to hear this, but maybe it’s — come on. Maybe it’s a good thing that the truth came out. I wanted to tell carly myself, but we were dealing with so much loss that I waited. O-obviously, I waited too long. But there was never gonna be a good time for carly to find out what happened between us in nixon falls. If there’s anything that I can do — like what?! So is everyone gossiping about me at spring ridge, about how I accepted a pardon and escaped punishment? Oh, yeah, yeah. Any one of those inmates would have jumped at the chance to go out those doors. MaybI shouldn’t have gone out those doors. Number one, my nephew shouldn’t have gotten away with what he did, and number two, I don’t want to be out in the real world where there’s alcohol everywhere and no one to stop me from drinking it. Well, you’ve had a glass of champagne at your elbow, and you haven’t had a sip since I sat down. So I’d say you’re doing pretty well. Probably good that you came by. I don’t have anyone to talk to or anyone that I want to talk to, and I’ve distanced myself from everyone, including the friend that I left behind there. Well, I guess that’s something else that you failed at, because, um… I’m right here. Home again. Ahh. At last, I have you all to myself. No m ore hands to shakeor babies to kiss. You’re all mine. Mm. [ Doorbell rings ] You’re kidding.
[ Laughs ] Let’s not answer it. Anyone who rings a doorbell after midnight on new year’s eve can’t be a good person. Spencer and esme might have forgotten their key. I think — let me just call your security detail. No, no. I refuse to live in fear. I will look. Is peter alert? Is he talking? Britt didn’t say, but I promise you, I’ll give you an update when I know something. In the meantime, I think you should all stay here and enjoy the night. Oh, well… no! No, no way. [ Sighs ] Austin: So, what do you think? Are victor and peter in there, plotting world domination, or are they just killing each other? Is that what you wanted? You wanted them to kill each other? Is that why you okayed mr. Cassadine’s late-night visit?

[ Chuckles ] A big part of me was hoping peter would never wake up from his coma. But if he can actually stand trial and be sent away for the rest of his life, even better. I just love it when I’m so completely wrong. I really had you figured for somebody that was gonna play this by the book. I mean, you were so keen to have me thrown off the staff for brook lynn’s made-up violation. Watch it, or I’ll go through with it after all. Yeah, I don’t know about that. I think —
[ Chuckles ] Well, no, I-I just… okay, dr. Westbourne, I don’t think you’re “the britch.” People talk. You have a reputation, but I’m not buying into it because, you know, from my perspective, you worked christmas eve, you worked new year’s eve, and I think you care. I think you care a great deal about people and about this place, whether you care to admit it or not. Well, the truth is I-I didn’t have a better offer. Isn’t that why you worked the holidays, too? Yeah, pretty much. Well, at least we won’t be the only kids at the uncool table. We had an agreement once. Essential to that agreement was a certain prisoner held in a cell back in greece. Now, you sadly decided to welch on that agreement, and then you tried to kill me. Well, what can I say? Bygones. But the fact is there’s still something I need that only our former prisoner can provide. In exchange, I am prepared to offer you protection.
[ Sighs ] That’s not only the best deal you can get, peter. It’s the only deal. So why don’t you start talking? Tell me how I get what I need from drew cain.
[ Monitor beeping ] I get the feeling that something else brought you here tonight, something more than — than just missing jason. What makes you think you know what I’m feeling? Look, you’re clearly hurting about something, and… jason isn’t here. But for his sake, I would really love to help you if you let me. [ Sighs ] Look, I-I have bad news. Peter regained consciousness. I mean, there’s not much that we can do about it right now, but call me when you get this because… we have to figure out our next steps. Austin! Britt called my dad and said that peter was awake. Do you know anything? I do. I was there when peter regained consciousness. Felicia: Oh, honey, I’m so sorry. So what’s the prognosis? Is he out of the woods or could he go back into a coma? I want to know what peter’s talking about. Did he say anything about louise? Mom! Okay, he — he’s not doing a lot of talking at all. He was intubated. He’s — he’s really uncomfortable. But, maxie, I’m gonna make you a promise. Peter august is never again going to be a threat to you or to louise. Time is of the essence, peter. What’s the key to getting drew cain to tell me what I need to know? First, you get me maxie and my daughter.
[ Monitor beeping ] Victor! Out of the room, now. From now on, there’s restricted access until peter returns to pentonville to stand trial. Ah! It’s all right. I was just leaving. I appreciate what you’re trying to do, drew. But if you really want to help me, you go your way and I’ll go mine. I’m not gonna push. But if you change your mind, you know how to reach me.
