Gwen: [Laughs]

Xander: I don’t know what the hell you can find to laugh about.

Gwen: Well, hello. I’m reading “the intruder.”

Xander: Any more news about snyder?

Gwen: No, but there is about you. My goodness, xander, I didn’t think it was possible, but you’ve topped my front-page story.

Xander: What are you talking about?

Gwen: Well, it’s not the most flattering photo of you, but I have to say, I quite do like the front headline.

[Soft music]

Theo: You found ciara? Where is she?

Paulina: No, slow down, slow down, theo–I said, I think i might have found her. I don’t have all the information yet.

Theo: What do you mean?

Paulina: Well, this woman called, and she saw my poster about ben and ciara, and she thinks she has a lead.

Theo: Why did she call you instead of the police?

Paulina: She wants the reward money first.

Theo: That sounds pretty shady.

Paulina: It sure does, but this might be your only chance to find her.

[Tense music]

Ciara: Bye, ben.

Ben: Goodbye.

What’s going on?

Ciara: Nothing.

Ben: You’re remembering. You’re remembering right now.

Ciara: No, no.

Ben: Yes, you are, yes, you are–then what’s wrong?

Ciara: Nothing, nothing. Ben, I have to go.

Ben: Wait, wait, don’t go! Don’t go, ciara. Do not go, do not fight it ’cause I know you can feel it. I can tell.

Ciara: Thank you.

Ben: You’re welcome.

Ciara: Oh, my god.

Ben: What does it say?

Ciara: [Gasps] Oh, my god.

Ben: What is it?

Ciara: I remember.

[Soft music]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Lani: You know, dad, I just love how you say, “why won’t you let aunt paulina make amends?” Like I’m the one being unreasonable here.

Abe: Implying that I am?

Lani: Good god, dad. Did you catch ciara’s amnesia? Paulina price came here for a christening and stayed to make a killing, lying every step of the way, banging on about diversity and multiculturalism as a smoke screen so we wouldn’t notice her boundless greed. I don’t know how you can just get over that hypocrisy.

Abe: The fact is that–

Lani: No, and you know what’s worse about it, dad? What is worst of all is that she used your spotless reputation and your decades of service to this town to broker the deal and didn’t even care what happened to you.

Abe: I disagree with that last assessment, but all the rest is true. Paulina lied and planned something that is terrible, but what’s also true, she didn’t go through with what she planned, and she is sorry.

Lani: She is always sorry. She’s sorry when she’s been found out, dad. So now she’ll spend some time beating on her chest, vowing to make a change, but I have known her my entire life, and bottom line, she never changes.

Paulina: The woman says she’s gonna text me her bank account information, and as soon as i transfer the money, she’ll call me and tell me what she knows.

Theo: That sounds like a scam to me.

Paulina: To me, too, but I’m willing to take the chance.

Theo: Why?

Paulina: For you and your father; I care about both of you.

Theo: Well, thank you, but if we’re actually gonna do this, we need to get the police involved.

Paulina: Oh, no, no, no! That would scare her off.

Theo: Okay, how about we call shawn? I mean, he’s ciara’s brother. He wants to find her as much as I do, and he’ll know whether or not we can trust this woman.

Ben: What are you remembering?

Ciara: We were just off the square, sitting on a park bench, and I open up a fortune cookie. And it said, “will you marry me?”

Ben: And then what happened?

Ciara: Oh, my god.

Ben: What does it say?

[Soft music]

Ciara: “Will you marry me?”

Ben: Of course I will marry you. The question is, will you marry me?

Ciara: You asked me to marry you. The airport can be a real challenge for new homeowners

Steve: Thanks for coming over, jack.

Jack: Sure. You sounded kind of grumpy on the phone. Though whatever it is, it’s not good news.

Steve: I’ve been checking out the late dr. Snyder. Tripp and kayla were right about him. He was a total sleazebag.

Jack: I know you thought he’d been stealing pills from the hospital, selling them on the street.

Steve: Kayla gave me access to his office, and now i have proof. He’d been running his little side business for at least six months.

Jack: Great. So why’d you need to meet with me?

Steve: Because it looks like your daughter gwen was involved.

Gwen: Goodness, you really are the definition of class, aren’t you? Nothing like crashing an anniversary party only to announce to a roomful of friends and family that you’d shagged the wife.

Xander: Oh, yeah, should’ve been more discreet, like you.

Gwen: How drunk was she?

Xander: Hm?

Gwen: Nicole, how drunk was she when she slept with you?

Xander: What makes you think she was drunk?

Gwen: Well, come on, no woman’s gonna go trolling around the bottom of the barrel if she’s completely sober.

Xander: Two lonely people reached out to one another for the solace of a human connection.

Gwen: Oh.

Xander: Please don’t cheapen the memory.

Gwen: Wait a minute. That’s why she gave you the job. You were blackmailing her.

Xander: You know how important fashion is to me.

Gwen: Xander, it made the papers. Do you understand that this is now on your permanent record? Not only is it in complete black and white that you are 200 proof an absolute bloody tosser, you can’t be trusted. You’re never gonna get another job again, mate.

Xander: Mm.

Gwen: Mm, really? How could you be so cavalier about your insanely stupid and destructive behavior? Tell me, was your moment of fame worth it?

Xander: You wouldn’t believe how worth it it was.

Shawn: I just find it fishy that this woman, she wants the money first, and she also didn’t contact the cops directly, so…

Paulina: Well, I told you, she doesn’t trust the cops, and I think she might be afraid that I’ll screw her out of that money once I get her info.

Shawn: Or maybe she read that you tried to screw the city out of its own town square.

Theo: Shawn, please, it could be a lead.

Shawn: And it also could be a setup–look, I already wasted enough time on a stakeout at the dimeras’, which I think is probably just a calculated misdirect that was set up by ben.

[Phone beeps]

Paulina: Oh.

Shawn: Look, I’m not in the mood for another fake lead, all right?

Paulina: This is the woman’s bank account information. She says if she doesn’t get that money in the next ten minutes, the deal is off. It’s now or never.

Ben: Do you remember what happened next? Wait, before you answer that, let me do this the way it should be done.

Ciara: You wanted to get down on bended knee, but it wasn’t easy because you were hurt.

Ben: That’s right, because those thugs from the mall thought I was jake and beat me up, but nothing was going to stop me from proposing to you. Ciara alice brady… will you marry me?

Ciara: Yes. I said yes.

Ben: Yes, you said yes. You said yes, and I should’ve known the universe would come through for us.

Ciara: You really didn’t mess with this fortune?

Ben: No, I didn’t mess with it–I didn’t have to. Don’t you see that? Ciara, it doesn’t matter the circumstances. It doesn’t matter what the odds are. Fate is always going to bring us back together.

[Soft music]

To be a thriver

Gwen: Sami paid you $1 million to out nicole?

Xander: Well, minus the money she needed for my bail, which I wouldn’t have needed if it wasn’t for you.

Gwen: Hang on, that’s not my fault that you got arrested. Nobody told you to shove a copper.

Xander: I wouldn’t have shoved him if you hadn’t thrown me under the bus.

Gwen: I panicked.

Xander: I told you there was a risk julie might id snyder as the man passed out on her couch.

Gwen: I know, but we’d already told julie that man was your friend, so I had to tell the police the same thing, didn’t I?

Xander: Now I’ve got eli pressuring me to name my so-called friend.

Gwen: Have the police gotten in touch with you after you were arrested?

Xander: No, I think they’re too busy searching for ciara, but sooner or later they’ll be back, demanding answers. I won’t be able to put them off much longer.

Gwen: I don’t think you’ll have to. I think I just came up with a solution.

Abe: I don’t understand. Before all this went down, you seemed so happy that paulina was here in salem.

Lani: Maybe I was. You know, I hadn’t seen her in a really long time, and it was nice to have family at the christening, but I’d forgot how she operates. I forgot that there’s always a grand entrance, and she’s so funny, and flamboyant, and seemingly generous, but at the end, dad, she’s just always going to let you down.

Abe: How so?

Lani: Like I told you before, growing up, she was in and out of the picture. She would come into our lives like a tornado, and then I would be the most important little girl to her, and there would be presents, and shopping trips, and…but most importantly, there would be these promises that she would make me, promises about the places that we would go and the things that we would see. And then like that, she would just be gone and disappear, and sometimes without even an explanation.

Abe: That must have hurt.

Lani: Hurt? One time, she just about broke my heart.

Shawn: Look, I want to find ciara, too, but you might be throwing $100,000 down the drain.

Theo: But what if this woman is telling the truth? This could be our only chance of finding ciara. She’s alone with ben.

Paulina: You think ben would hurt her? I thought he loved her.

Theo: If she rejects him, he could snap–I mean, do we even know if he took his medication with him?

Paulina: Medication? What are you talking about?

Theo: What I’m talking about is his killing three women. He was known as the necktie killer, and he’s on medication so he doesn’t do it again.

Paulina: And your mother let him marry her baby? I don’t care if I’m getting scammed or not; no, I just want to do everything I can to get her back. I sent her the money. Now all we do, we just sit, and we wait.

Ciara: Fate, I still don’t know if I buy it.

Ben: If you remembered everything that happened between us, you would. Can you remember anything else?

Ciara: Just that you asked me to marry you and that I said yes. But maybe I only remember that because you told me about it in the hospital.

Ben: Well, then let’s keep going. What happened next? Will you marry me?

Ciara: Yes. Yes, ben, of course I will. Now get up off your knees, and come kiss me. I helped you get up.

Ben: And then?

Ciara: Are you okay?

Ben: I’m okay.

Ciara: Okay.

Ben: I hope you like pancakes. Come on, ciara, they’re good. You need to eat.

[Soft music]

Ciara: Ben.

Jaycee tried gain flings for the first time the other day.

[Soft music]

Ciara: I remember everything, ben.

Ben: Thank you, god.

Ciara: I remember you taking care of me here, and my sponge bath, and kicking you because you tickled me too much. And I remember our first kiss, and I remember the first time we made love, and I remember our wedding, but mostly, ben, I just–i remember how much I love you.

Ben: Love you. I can’t even believe this is really happening. I felt like so much time has passed, and I wasn’t even sure if this day would come.

Ciara: And you never stopped fighting for me. You never stopped fighting, even when–oh, my god, ben. Ben, I was horrible to you. I said awful things to you.

Ben: You were scared.

Ciara: I was cruel. I mean, it was our wedding anniversary, and I wanted to deliberately marry theo. Oh, my god, theo.

Theo: She’s not calling.

Shawn: I told you it was a mistake.

Theo: Maybe we can trace her call.

Paulina: She called from an unknown phone number.

Theo: I might be able to get around that.

Shawn: There’s no point. You got conned, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

[Phone rings]

Paulina: It’s her. Yeah, it’s me, I’m here. Tell me what you know.

Lani: When I was a kid, i loved the “madeline” books.

Abe: That little girl in paris.

Lani: Yeah, more than anything, I wanted to go to paris, and I was convinced that as soon as I got there that i would immediately meet 11 english-speaking girlfriends, and we would visit the eiffel tower in two straight lines.

Abe: [Laughs] I wish I’d known you then.

Lani: Yeah, I was a dreamy little thing, and poor mom, I used to beg her all the time to go to paris for our summer vacation, but we couldn’t afford it, and that definitely did not stop me from dreaming about it. That year, aunt paulina came for christmas, and you want to know what aunt paulina is great at? It’s getting people to tell her their dreams. So right before she left that night, she hugged me, and she whispered into my ear, “next summer, we’re gonna go to paris.”

Abe: Oh, dear.

Lani: And then I would get these letters from her, and these letters, they made my dream even better, you know? Not only were we gonna visit the eiffel tower, we were gonna go to fancy restaurants there, and we would have lobster, and she even knew the french word for it–homard–and then we would go to the louvre, and we would ride the les bateaux.

[Laughs] And you know, what was so great about it, dad–was just so great is that it was a secret.

Abe: Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Lani: Oh, it was. I never told mom, but I told all the girls at school, and boy, did they get a laugh at me once school started up again. “Oh, lani, how was paris? How was the homard, lani?” Everyone knew–everyone knew that aunt paulina never showed up. Everyone knew that I didn’t go to paris, and everyone knew that I was a fool to believe her.

Jack: Steve, I really did think that gwen was trying to change her life, and once again, I gotta face the fact that when I’m dealing with gwen, you never know what’s real and what’s a performance art. So have you taken this to the police?

Steve: Not yet. I wanted to give you a heads-up first.

Jack: Good. If you can hold off for now until I talk to gwen and try to get the straight story…

Steve: Sure.

Jack: Steve, I just don’t get it. Gwen’s mother was a drug addict. She died of an overdose. Why would she get involved with a drug dealer?

Gwen: So all you have to do is use part of your ill-gotten gains to hire some bloke off the street who looks like snyder and tell him to tell julie that he was the one that she found on the couch.

Xander: Okay, why does it have to be my money?

Gwen: Because I don’t have any. I don’t even have a job.

Xander: Maybe you should get one.

Gwen: I haven’t found one that quite matches my skill set yet, darling.

Xander: Yeah, well, let me see, you’re very skilled at drugging people and seducing ceos–although, to be fair, that wasn’t your natural allure, was it? You had to convince said ceo that his wife was cheating on him and get him dead drunk, so…

Gwen: Yes, I’m just loaded with allure.

Xander: According to you.

Gwen: You’re living proof that I am. You’re the one who couldn’t stop himself from kissing me.

Xander: Oh, come on, you practically threw yourself at me.

Gwen: That’s revisionist history, and besides, I don’t even like you that much.

Xander: I don’t like you either–what difference does that make? And who cares who made the initial approach? Once I kissed you, you got completely carried away.

Gwen: Well, you weren’t exactly passive, were you?

Xander: All right, I’ll concede that. We both got carried away, and I think we should get carried away again. Is struggling to manage your type 2 diabetes

Abe: Did paulina ever say why she didn’t show up?

Lani: Yeah, she finally told mom about the trip. She blamed it on some business commitment that she had, and then the next time I saw her, it was like it never even happened.

Abe: Did you ever talk to her about it?

Lani: No, I was too embarrassed, so I let it go, and I moved on. You know, it’s actually been a really long time since I even thought about that incident, and now that I’m talking about it, all those feelings are coming back up, and, dad, I just–i really do not want you and theo to get hurt the way that I did all those years ago, and that’s why I think that it’s best if we have absolutely nothing to do with my aunt paulina.

Paulina: Uh-huh, uh-huh. Got it, mm-hmm, yeah. You’re an absolute angel. Oh, one more thing, if this turns out to be a wild goose chase, I will hunt you down like a dog, and you will wish that you were never born. Uh-huh, yeah, you have a blessed day. She says that she saw a limo headed north on route 17 toward mammoth falls.

Shawn: Oh, my god, I know where he took her. It’s that damn cabin.

Ciara: Ben, I can’t marry theo now. That’ll kill him. Ben, it’s gonna kill him.

Ben: He knew he was taking a risk; he knew that you could get your memory back.

Ciara: Yes, but I told him over, and over, and over again that I wouldn’T. He’s in love with me, ben.

Ben: I know that.

Ciara: And I love him, too, but as a friend.

Ben: Ciara, he was going to marry you knowing that you still loved me. He knew he was taking a risk that you could get your memory back.

Ciara: Yes, but, ben, i assured him over and over again that that wouldn’t happen. I have to find him. I have to tell him in person.

Ben: Ciara, you can’t leave right now; I just got you back. I’m not trying to lose you all over again.

Ciara: Ben, that is never, ever gonna happen again.

Ben: The nearest phone is, like, miles away.

Ciara: Which is why I have to leave right now while there’s still daylight.

Ben: Do you have to?

Ciara: It’s not just for theo’s sake. It’s for yours, too. I need somebody to look at that ankle.

Ben: My ankle stopped hurting as soon as you started to remember. Please just let me hold you a little bit longer.

[Soft music]

[Doorknob clicks]

Jack: What’s going on here?

Xander: Nothing.

Jack: That’s bull. I just talked to steve. Kayla asked him to look into what dr. Snyder had been up to. She thought he had been stealing drugs from the hospital and selling them on the street.

Gwen: Wow, I can’t imagine him doing a thing like that.

Jack: Really? Because steve said you were running his delivery service.

[Tense music]

I may have moderate to

severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Abe: I am not trying to minimize how much she hurt you.

Lani: But?

Abe: But if you never talked to her about it, maybe she thinks you didn’t want to talk to her about it, and if you didn’t talk to her about it, maybe there are things you don’t know.

Lani: You have really fallen hard for her, haven’t you, dad?

Abe: The paulina I know screwed up big time, but she admitted it.

Lani: Yeah, when she was found out, dad.

Abe: She tried to make amends. The town square is still standing, chanel is going to open her bakery, and paulina put up a great deal of money to help theo find ciara.

Lani: It is always about money with her. Can’t you see that?

Abe: Is that so hard to understand after what that man did to her?

Lani: What? What man?

Abe: Oh, I assumed you knew.

Lani: Knew what?

Ciara: This is so nice, ben. We haven’t been like this in over a year.

Ben: It was only a couple months after the wedding. Everybody thought you had died in that car explosion.

Ciara: Except for I was trapped in that glass cage the entire time. I really thought I was never gonna make it out, but you found me.

Ben: In a way, you found me, sending me those dreams, letting me know that you were still alive.

Ciara: You know what? I actually remember that. Yeah, there was this one really vivid dream, and in it, you and I were–

Ben: Romeo and juliet.

Ciara: Yeah.

Ben: That’s the one that made sure that I knew that you were definitely alive.

Ciara: Only they didn’t get a happy ending.

Ben: But we will. The universe is gonna see to that.

Ciara: You know, I can kind of understand why people think that the whole psychic connection thing is crazy. I mean, when you were telling me about it, and I didn’t remember, I thought you were absolutely bonkers.

Ben: That’s understandable.

Ciara: Yeah? But now the both of us know that it’s true.

Ben: Yes, we do. Yes, we do.

Gwen: That’s ridiculous. I would never be involved with drugs, especially after what i went through with my mother.

Jack: That’s what I would have thought, but then snyder’s dealer id’d you as the delivery person.

Gwen: There must be some sort of a mistake.

Jack: Yes, the same way julie was mistaken when she id’d xander’s drunken friend on the couch as dr. Snyder.

Xander: Yeah, but you know, looking back, my friend does kind of look like snyder.

Gwen: You said that the person who id’d me was a drug dealer, so he can’t be trusted.

Jack: Stop lying to me! I brought you into my home. I defended you. I told everyone you had changed. I trusted you, and you were just playing me.

Gwen: That’s not true.

Jack: And another thing, you really shouldn’t use words like true and trust. You don’t know what they mean. But I gotta hand it to you. You found a great cover. You wrapped yourself up in our middle-class respectability, and then you and your doctor teamed up to sell drugs.

Gwen: It wasn’t like that.

Jack: Then you admit it? You were working with snyder.

Gwen: Yeah, yes, I was.

[Tense music]

From prom dresses

Gwen: Please let me explain.

Jack: Did you keep drugs in this house?

Gwen: Yes, but–

Jack: Putting julie, doug, me, your family at considerable risk, but of course, you don’t really think about that because you don’t think about other people.

Gwen: No, you don’t understand.

Jack: No, I think I do understand–finally, I do. Your partner in crime dropped dead, and you knew that at any moment, julie, myself, or anyone could come walking through that door, so you got xander to help you. You’re good at getting men to do what you want them to do, aren’t you? So now the two of you took snyder’s body and you dumped it in the lake, didn’t you?

Gwen: Do you know, she was so guilty that she left town, but it’s strange because it gave me a chance to get close to my father. If he finds out the truth, i will lose him forever.

Jack: Please, after everything you’ve done to me, to my family, at least now you owe me the truth.

Gwen: Yeah, the truth is–

Xander: The truth is you’ve got this all backwards, mate. I wasn’t helping gwen out of a jam. She was helping me.

[Tense music]

Paulina: Someday, maybe someday you’ll forgive me.

[Knocking] Lani? What the hell are you doing here?

Lani: God, that is awful. I never knew anything about that.

Abe: Well, now you understand why money is so important to her.

Lani: Yeah, but, dad, this reward is only gonna make things worse.

[Phone beeps]

Abe: Excuse me. Theo and shawn are on their way to the cabin where ben took care of ciara. They think he might have taken her there.

Lani: How’d they figure that out?

Abe: Someone called paulina. Thanks to that reward she offered, they can make sure that ciara’s okay.

Ben: I cannot even believe this is actually happening. There were moments when i almost gave up.

Ciara: And I really didn’t make it easier on you, huh? Baby, I got our marriage annulled–how could I do that?

Ben: It just gives us an excuse to have another wedding.

Ciara: Yeah, minus the bomb.

Ben: Yeah, minus the bomb, and this time, a honeymoon.

Ciara: Oh, that sounds wonderful.

Ben: It does, doesn’t it?

Ciara: I love you so much, ben.

Ben: Love you.

Shawn: Hands in the air.
