Claire: Hi.
Ben: Hey.
Claire: So I’ve been thinking about this and I’m pretty sure I have something.
Ben: Come on in.
Claire: So I really think that I can convince my mom to help you fight this divorce.
Ben: Claire–
Claire: So I’m going to tell her that it’s for ciara’s own good, that she has been through so much that she’s just not in the place to make big decisions right now so if we can just slow down the process–
Ben: Claire. Thank you. Really. But it’s too late.
Ciara: I cannot believe how much henry has grown.
Allie: I know. Ciara, we missed you so much.
Ciara: And I missed you too. So do you want something to drink or wine, water, anything?
Allie: No, but I do you want you to tell me what’s wrong.
Ciara: Wrong? No, allie, there’s nothing wrong.
Allie: Okay. Well, on the phone you sounded really upset, and right now you’re a little wound up so…
Ciara: That’s just because I’m very excited. I’m very, very excited about something.
Allie: Okay, about what?
Ciara: I will explain that in detail. But first I have to ask you something and I need you to say yes.
Allie: What’s that?
Ciara: I want you to be my maid of honor.
Lucas: What happened? What happened to the anniversary celebration?
Philip: You don’t wanna know.
Lucas: Don’t tell me something went wrong. Not in salem.
Philip: Let’s just say the party’s over.
Eric: I hoped to be gone before you got back.
Nicole: Suitcase kind of clued me in.
Eric: Yes, I didn’t think there’d be really anything for us to talk about, is there?
Nicole: No.
Eric: Just going to take a late-night flight out of salem. I gotta just, you know, to grab the flight out of new york in the morning.
Nicole: You going back to a little village in africa?
Eric: Yeah, that’s right.
Nicole: You know, why don’t we just call it what it really is? Running away.
EJ: What did nicole mean when she said, “let she who is without sin cast the first stone?”
Sami: Well, I don’t know. I mean, maybe she found religion all of a sudden.
EJ: It sounded like an accusation. What sin have you committed now, samantha? Hmm. “Without sin.” I wonder what she meant by that.
Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”
[Soft orchestration]
Sami: She didn’t mean anything by it? You know, it’s just a shot in the dark.
EJ: A rather biblical shot in the dark, wouldn’t you say?
Sami: No, I would say that it’s just classic nicole, right? She’s backed into a corner and she would say whatever mean, nasty thing comes into her mind.
EJ: Backed into a corner is putting it mildly, don’t you think? I would have thought backed into a corner and facing a firing squad.
Sami: A uncharitable person might say that she has no one to blame but herself.
EJ: It must have been her worst nightmare. Xander announcing to a room full of people in front of her husband, her husband’s family that she violated her marriage vows.
Sami: I can’t imagine why she got involved with that guy in the first place. I mean, he’s a ticking time bomb.
EJ: A ticking time bomb with a flair for the dramatic.
Sami: Exactly.
EJ: Who does that remind me of?
Sami: You know, what ej? I am exhausted and frankly, I’m still worried about eric. Maybe we could finish this postmortem in the morning.
EJ: I do find it odd how, with her whole world crashing around her, nicole singles you out for judgment.
Sami: You know, ej, I really love when we keep talking about things that I don’t want to talk about.
EJ: There are just so many questions. For example, you say you saw nicole brady stumble into salem inn with her nemesis and kept it to yourself.
Sami: Yeah, well, I wanted to spare eric.
EJ: But he didn’t get spared, did he? He got it right between the eyes in a crowded pub. It’s as almost if it was staged.
Sami: Damn it, ej.
EJ: It was so brutal, so humbling, so devastating. I can’t possibly see how that marriage survives. Do you?
Eric: I thought you had enough pain for one night.
Nicole: So you decided for both of us it would be better for me to come home to an empty apartment? And you took out all your anger and frustration on this picture and didn’t wanna talk to me in person because I’ve had enough pain for tonight. Well, thank you. Thank you, eric, for always thinking about others.
Eric: I don’t really think there’s anything either one of us could say that could change what happened tonight.
Nicole: No. No, because the past is written in stone and there’s nothing that I can do or say to change the fact that I slept with xander.
Eric: Stop it! Stop it! I don’t wanna hear this.
Nicole: Because I was lonely and I was harassed and I degraded myself with a man who had abused me. And you, you chose to spend the first year of our marriage 8,000 miles away from me, our home, and our family, and our relationship was spent on social media. And then months went by where we didn’t even get to touch.
[Breathing heavily] So here’s nicole. The scarlet woman. Bad, bad, bad. And here’s eric running back to his good work. Back to a world where he does good for others and no one asks a damn thing of him. Depression makes it hard for me
Sami: All right, I don’t see how the marriage lasts now that eric knows what he knows now.
EJ: And you’re sorry about that?
Sami: No. You know very well I am not sorry to see that marriage end. You know how I feel about nicole. She doesn’t deserve to be with a wonderful guy like eric, but I am sorry that eric is in pain.
EJ: But it has to be done, right? Can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
Sami: Why are you doing this? You know I hate it when you cross-examine me?
EJ: Cross-examining you? I thought we were just an old couple discussing events of the evening.
Sami: Well then why do I feel like I’m in the witness box and you’re trying to blame everything on me?
EJ: Why would I do that when it’s clearly xander’s fault? But it does seem out of character for you to have seen nicole in such a compromising position and having never mentioned it to anyone.
Sami: What was I supposed to do? Post it on social media? I mean, if I had told eric or anyone else, I had no proof of what happened inside. No one would have believed me.
EJ: So you started tracking down credit card receipts? Nail it down, make the case.
Sami: Well, my brother’s a smart guy, ej, but he’s a fool when it comes to nicole so yeah, I was trying to protect him.
EJ: [Chuckles] So you decided to gather your proof and then in a quiet, private, solemn night, you would discreetly share what you knew with eric? But instead, somehow out of the blue, xander decides to make a public spectacle of nicole’s humiliation and shame? Now why… just why would he do that?
Nicole: Were you just gonna leave this here for me to find? Talk about a picture worth a thousand words. You didn’t think that would cause me pain? Or maybe you wanted to hurt me but you didn’t need to talk to me about it person ’cause that’s one of the perks of a long-distance relationship, right? You don’t have to own up to what you’ve done.
Eric: Okay, oh, right! I’m selfish. I’m sorry.
Nicole: You’re not selfish. You just weren’t here. You decided to go to africa and then you decided to stay. And when you did talk to me, all you did was talk about the–the–the children and the poverty and the lack of medication. And how was I supposed to compete with that? Well, the–the baby’s teething and holly’s wondering where her daddy is and I’m lonely. How was I supposed to talk to you about that? You asked all the right questions. “How are you? How’s holly?” But it was like you–you didn’t even wanna hear the answers. You were like a balloon that was just floating away from me.
Eric: Nicole, I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry, but good god, xander… I mean, if there’s any person besides me who hates him, it’s you.
Nicole: Don’t you think I understand that? Do you really think that I wanna defend myself for what I did? How can I– how can I expect you to believe anything I say now? How can I expect you to believe me when I tell you that I love you? Because I do love you. I just don’t know if it matters anymore. Maybe I–I just might have to accept the fact that this marriage is over. But I can’t accept. I won’t accept you just slipping away again because you married me and you made the same vows as me and the least you could do is talk to me. Talk to me like I am your wife.
Chad: Theo, what’s up, man?
Theo: Not much. Rematch?
Chad: Rematch. You let me win the last time.
Theo: I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Chad: Yeah, okay. All right.
[Both laugh] So something tells me you’re here for more than a rematch.
Theo: Well, actually ben and ciara’s marriage just got annulled.
Chad: That’s great. You’re free to get married.
Theo: I am. Actually, I have a favor to ask.
Chad: Name it.
Theo: Would you be my best man?
Ciara: So my grandfather has a friend who’s a judge and he got him to issue in an annulment.
Allie: So now you’re going to marry theo?
Ciara: I am. Oh, allie, he and I get along so well. We never fight, I swear. And he’s, like, the kindest man I’ve ever met in my life. And he’s really funny, even though that might surprise you because he comes across all serious and quiet, but he really does have a great sense of humor.
Allie: It doesn’t surprise me. I like theo. I really do. So you guys are getting married here in salem?
Ciara: Mm-hmm, both of our families are here.
Allie: So when’s the big day?
Ciara: Tomorrow.
Claire: You’re sure? Right. Okay, thanks, mom.
Ben: What is it? Claire, just tell me. Whatever the hell it is.
Claire: Well, you might as well hear it from me. My dad just got a text from ciara. She and theo are getting married tomorrow.
Eric: I thought we did talk. I thought we decided together.
Nicole: For future reference, when you ask someone, “is it okay if I do exactly what I want” and make it very, very clear they better say yes, that is not talking. That is not making a decision together.
Eric: Then I’m sorry.
Nicole: Damn it, eric. We made a decision together for your niece and her son to move in here and–and then you just checked out.
Eric: What? You said you were okay with that?
Nicole: I was okay with it, but I didn’t think I would be doing it alone. I didn’t think that every three months I’d get a memo that you decided to re-up. I mean, I-I got married and I-I don’t think I felt more alone in my entire life.
Eric: Well, is that supposed to excuse you sleeping with xander now?
Nicole: No, it doesn’t excuse me for sleeping with xander! It is–I hate what I did! It was the worst mistake I made in my life, okay? But I have to figure out some way–some way to understand why it happened. And how I can forgive myself because if I can’t forgive myself, how am I gonna go on? And I have to go on, eric. I have to. Because I have a little girl that I love with my whole heart. And there are people here that need me.
Eric: If things were getting that bad and you were that desperate, you should have told me.
Nicole: I tried. I tried; I did. I even tried to tell you after it happened.
Eric: No, you did not.
Nicole: Yes, I did. I-I wrote you an email. Sounds so sad coming out of my mouth, but I wrote you an email and I couldn’t send it. And I tried talking to you and I… and then you came home and it was our anniversary.
Eric: I get why you’re mad. I get why you’re mad because I bailed out on you. What I don’t get is, why xander? Him? Him of all people?
Nicole: Maybe I went to bed with xander because I thought I could finally get my husband to pay attention to me.
Lucas: So you think I should get nicole to–
Philip: Bring ej up to speed? Like you said, you can’t do it. Sami would never forgive you. But if nicole gives the letter to ej…
Lucas: Right. Sami would think nicole’s just trying to get revenge.
Philip: Ej kicks sami to the curb, who’s gonna be right there to comfort her?
Sami: Who knows why xander does anything?
EJ: Hmm. You know what else I didn’t understand. After xander spilled the beans tonight, you just stood there. I would’ve thought you’d be right there to back up his story. I mean, you’ve made it very clear over the years you didn’t think nicole was good enough for eric. Wasn’t it the perfect opportunity to, um, what’s the american expression? To pile on.
Sami: [Chuckles] I didn’t see the need. All that matters is that eric finally knows the truth.
EJ: Hmm. Or… something else is at play. I wonder, samantha, what exactly is it that you’re not telling me?
Sami: All right, all right, your honor, have mercy on me. I’m ready to confess. Well, truth is that I paid xander to show up at the party tonight and tell everybody what I already knew.
EJ: No.
[Chuckles] How much?
Sami: A million dollars.
EJ: A million dollars? The man’s on his uppers. Did you even try low-balling him?
Sami: Well, it was worth it. Every penny for eric to know the truth about nicole.
EJ: Our xander does seem a little one-note about his fees. Didn’t he want a million dollars to stop from killing you and lucas?
Sami: He wanted $10 million, but I had to give him all cash because you remembered how you cancel the wire transfer last time.
EJ: Right. Well, I’m sure you were willing to pay whatever it took to bring nicole to her knees.
Sami: No matter what you think, I didn’t enjoy it tonight. I just did what I had to do. Eric had to know the truth.
EJ: Yeah. 30 seconds before xander arrived, eric thought he was happy. Now he’s miserable. But he knows the full story. Thanks to you.
Eric: You wanted to hurt me that much?
Nicole: You just told me you weren’t coming home. Again. I was so angry and–and hurt. I was so hurt that people on another continent were more important than me.
Eric: That’s not true.
Nicole: Can you just let me finish, please? I-I-I think I wanted to hurt you. But I definitely wanted to hurt me. I wanted to blow things up because that’s the one thing that I’m actually good at. Self-destruction.
Eric: I called you that night. You were disappointed. Why didn’t you just say?
Nicole: What? Do I tell you that you better come home or I’m going to sleep with xander? What, I didn’t even see that one coming. And I didn’t want beg and plead my husband to want to be on the same continent as me.
Eric: You’re right. This is as much as my fault as it is yours.
[Nicole sobbing]
Ben: Ciara cannot be marrying theo on our anniversary.
Claire: Ben, she doesn’t remember that, okay? This is just a coincidence.
Ben: I told her tomorrow was our anniversary last week. She’s doing this on purpose, claire.
Allie: Are you doing this on purpose?
Ciara: Doing what?
Allie: Marrying theo on your anniversary to ben.
Ciara: Oh, my god, this is not about ben. This is about me, allie. I wanna take that date back. I want to remember tomorrow as the day that I married my best friend, not the day that I married some serial killer. I have no memory of that day.
Allie: Well, I remember that day in detail. And I know you’re not gonna believe me but before all hell broke loose, I think it was the happiest day of your life.
Chad: Now, I don’t–i don’t mean to butt in, but I just think you’re–you’re maybe rushing things a little bit.
Theo: Neither one of us wants to wait.
Chad: I get that, but I mean, tomorrow?
Theo: Yeah. Well, ciara picked it because it was her anniversary to ben.
Chad: Romantic.
Theo: Yeah, I know. I don’t like the idea that she’s using our marriage as payback against ben.
Chad: Well, just because she hates ben doesn’t mean it changes the way she feels about you.
Theo: Checkmate.
Chad: What?
Theo: Don’T. Don’t act surprised. I know you let me win.
Chad: No, I don’t know–i don’t know what you’re talking about.
Ben: She’s marrying theo tomorrow to get back at me.
Claire: No, ben, I know that it looks that way, but–
Ben: What do you mean it looks that way? What other way could it look? What other reason does she have?
Claire: Maybe she’s scared. Seriously, maybe she wants to marry theo as soon as she can because she’s scared she’s gonna remember what she had with you.
Allie: That day you were so beautiful. You were so happy.
Ciara: That day, allie, the church was bombed because of ben. My entire family could have died. Everyone in that church could have died, including you and henry, all because of the horrible things ben had done.
Allie: Okay. Well, that ben wasn’t the ben that you were marrying.
Ciara: My god, I’m so sick of people saying that.
Allie: Okay, but it’s true. I mean, you don’t think that people can change?
Ciara: Not that much.
Allie: Look, from what I know about ben, which is mainly from my grandmother, he had a really hard childhood and he was mentally ill.
Ciara: Really don’t wanna hear this.
Allie: Okay, well, will you let me finish, please?
Ciara: Okay.
Allie: But he was very motivated to get better and through a lot of meds and therapy and mainly your love and your support, he did. He got better.
Ciara: You know, I’ve heard all of this before.
Allie: Okay, and I think you need to hear it again and again because ciara, my god, the two of you, you were so in love that after you kissed and said your vows, people were crying. You guys were the picture of happily ever after and everyone thought it was forever.
[Soft, solemn music]
Eric: You’re right. I was running away. I didn’t want to fix my part in this. I acted like the fact that I’ve been doing something good excused me from you, my marriage. I’m sincerely sorry. So what do we do now?
Philip: So what do you say?
Lucas: I hate it. Man, I do hate the way he treats her like–like she’s his property. I can’t stand it.
Philip: I picked up on that.
Lucas: But ej is dangerous. I mean, god only knows what–what he might do if he finds out what happened between us. I mean, I suppose I could do it. I could give nicole this letter and she might give it to ej, but I don’t know.
Philip: I’m pretty certain nicole would love to help. She’s the best shot at getting what you want. Sami.
Lucas: I do want her, but I can’t do it like this. I love her too much. Man, I don’t wanna hurt her. I should have just let this letter burn.
[Dramatic music]
Allie: I actually remember ben’s vows. He said–
Ciara: Don’t tell me what they said. Please don’t tell me what he said. Look, allie, I’ve told you I don’t remember and I don’t want to remember and here you are just going on and on about it like–
Allie: Okay, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I did not mean to upset you.
Ciara: No? Well, how did you think that I would react?
Allie: I just thought that– I don’t know. It’s just so sad to me that you and ben can’t be together.
Ciara: I’m sorry that you think it’s sad, but to me, all I can think about is how nuts I must’ve been to actually let that psychopath into my life. Allie, theo is my best friend. I love him. He makes me feel safe.
Allie: I get that he makes you feel safe, but is that the best reason to marry someone?
Ciara: I actually thought that you’d be excited that I asked you, but if you don’t wanna do it, then that’s fine.
Theo: Do what?
Ciara: I just asked allie to be my maid of honor.
Ben: You think ciara’s afraid that she’s going to remember what she had with me?
Claire: Maybe. I mean, think about it. If she did, that would change everything for her and for theo.
Ben: When ciara was in love with me, she was the bravest person I ever knew. She didn’t care about what I did or who I was. Only that she loved me.
Nicole: What do we do now? How many times have you asked yourself that? All I know is that no matter what I do, I will always be a sinner and you will always be a saint.
Eric: Far from it.
Nicole: I know you will find a way to forgive me. But I will never forgive myself. And although you took that priest collar off years ago, it doesn’t change who you are. You are a good man who wants to help other people and that is really hard to do with a wife–a wife wants your whole life and your whole heart to herself.
Eric: What are you saying?
Nicole: I’m saying that we are just two different people. And I think I’m the best version of me when I’m with you. And you’re the best version of you when you’re not with me.
Eric: So… what are we supposed to do?
Nicole: [Crying] There’s nothing we can do.
Eric: Nothing? You mean?
Nicole: [Sobbing] I mean… I think this marriage is over.
EJ: I know you don’t wanna talk about it, but there’s just one more thing I’d like to say.
Sami: Can I stop you?
EJ: It must’ve been awful for you to see xander and nicole heading into that inn.
Sami: Awful for me?
EJ: I may find eric tedious, but he’s a good man, a good husband, faithful. After everything I did to you.
Sami: Ej.
EJ: After you put your life on hold for me and I treated you terribly, you were faithful to a man who didn’t deserve it. Nicole betrayed eric in the first year of their marriage. I can actually understand why you did what you did. I just thank god that you hung with me. You didn’t turn to another man. I would’ve lost my mind.
[Sami breathes deeply]
Theo: And what did she say?
Allie: I said of course. I’d love to.
Theo: That’s great. Chad just said he’d be my best man. So we’re really doing this tomorrow.
Ciara: Nothing in the world is going to stop us, theo.
Claire: You need to be the brave one now, ben. Look, I know that this has been so hard on you. But you can’t quit.
Ben: You’re right. Ciara’s planning on marrying theo tomorrow, and I have to do whatever the hell it takes to stop her.
Sami: Let’s just forget about tonight, okay? We’re back together. That’s all that matters. Just forget about everything else, okay, ej?
Philip: So you’re just giving up?
Lucas: I think it’s best for now. But thank you. I appreciate it. Thanks for trying to help.
Philip: Well, I am not giving up.
Eric: I wanted to spend time with holly. I miss her so much.
Nicole: She’s missed you too. But you–you can video chat still, right? And I know that she’ll keep writing you letters and she always looks forward to your letters in the mail.
Eric: I can’t let you go.
Nicole: [Crying] You have to. You have to.
Eric: I can leave in the morning.
Nicole: Oh, god. No. No… you–you should go.
[Emotional piano music]
Eric: I’ll always love you.
Nicole: And I will always, always love you. [Sobbing] Oh, god. Oh, my god.
