[Knock at door]

Abe: Hey, hey. Hey, you know, look, I am very sorry for just dropping by, but I know I should’ve called first.

Eli: Oh, abe, you’re always welcome here, you know that. So, how’s theo?

Abe: He’s–he’s upset. But he’s tough. He’s–he’ll be okay. You know, he knew that ciara might remember being in love with ben, so it wasn’t like he was blindsided.

Eli: Right. Where’s he at now?

Abe: Turned in early. He knew lani would be worried about him, so I thought I’d stop by and update her. So where is she? Is she putting the kids to bed?

Eli: Actually, no. She went to go see paulina.

Lani: I am willing to let go of the past, okay, but we need a fresh start, a clean slate. No more secrets, no more lies. Can you promise me that?

Olivia: Of course she can. You can count on your aunt paulina to be honest with you. Now, I’m sure you wanna get back to my great-grandchildren–

Paulina: You know what, mama, I can speak for myself, okay. And I think it’s high time that I did. Lani, now, there’s something i need to tell you.

Lani: Okay. What is it? Go on, say it.

John: [Laughs] That’s great, belle, yeah. All right. Yeah. Thank you. Love you, too, honey. Bye, bye. There she is!

Marlena: I am so glad to be home! Oh!

John: I’m sorry you had to work so late, sweetheart.

Marlena: I’ll take one of those.

[Both laugh] Yeah. So glad to be home. What did belle have to say?

John: I’m gonna give you the good news first. Allie and claire, they were released from police custody. All the charges were dropped.

Marlena: Oh, that’s wonderful news.

John: There’s more, there’s more. Not only has ciara been found, but she has regained her memory and reunited with ben.

Marlena: Oh, I’m so happy for both of them.

John: I knew you would be. So am I.

Marlena: You said there was some bad news?

John: Yeah, unfortunately, according to isabella, samantha’s marriage is over.

Ej: Johnny.

Johnny: Surprise.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

[Both laugh]

Ej: This is a surprise. A wonderful one. What are you doing here? And why are you coming out of the wall?

Johnny: Well, the front door was locked.

Ej: There is a doorbell.

Johnny: Yeah, but then i figured, why pass up a chance to use the tunnels, my favorite part of the house. I, uh, I even found this. Nice catch.

Ej: So, digging up the lost treasures of your past aside, you still haven’t told me what you’re doing here in salem.

Johnny: Well, does a son need a reason to visit his parents? I was, uh, actually hoping to surprise mom. Is she around?

Marlena: Ej and sami broke up.

John: Mm-hmm.

Marlena: She must be devastated. Especially after she’s fought so hard to hold that family together. What happened?

John: Well, do you remember how you felt that there may be something else going on between lucas and sami besides just co-parenting?

Marlena: Oh, no.

John: Yeah.

Marlena: Oh, are you saying–

John: Yeah, I am. Apparently they got together briefly. Ej found out about it, was furious–no surprise there. And, yeah, that was the end of that.

Marlena: What, did belle just tell you that?

John: She had a business meeting with ej, and he couldn’t stop hinting about samantha’s infidelity.

Marlena: Oh. Ohh.

John: Yeah. So what do you think?

Marlena: I think they have been through so much, and they always manage to find their way back together.

John: Yeah, but this time it could be a bit different. Isabella saw that ej threw her out of the mansion.

Marlena: No.

John: Yeah, and no idea where she could be, either,

Marlena: Well, I wonder why we haven’t heard from her. Maybe she’s with allie, now that allie’s been released. I’m sure she feels comforted by the fact that her daughter is no longer in prison.

Tripp: Allie!

Allie: Hi!

Tripp: Oh, I just got off shift, I was about to head down to the police station. When did you get released?

Allie: Just a little while ago, you’re my first stop. Well, actually, I had to pick up henry and run an errand for my grandpa, but–

Tripp: I don’t care what stop I was, okay, I’ve been going nuts thinking about you locked up in that jail cell. Okay, but now–now you’re here, thank god.

[Elevator dings] Your mission:

Allie: Dupree?

Chanel: Hey, horton, tripp. I seem to have a knack for interrupting you guys.

Allie: That’s okay. I’m actually–I’m so glad to see you, hi.

Chloe: I heard you got released from the pd, so I just, you know, wanted to make sure you were okay.

Allie: Thank you. Thank you both for coming to the station earlier.

Chanel: Hey, it’s not like we can do anything, but since we couldn’t, how about we celebrate you being a free woman? Let’s do dinner, the three of us, and then you can sign the documents for the bakery.

Allie: Oh, I wish I could, but I actually have to go to my grandma marlena’S. I’m really worried about my mom, and I think I need her help. Do you think you could come?

Tripp: Yeah, definitely.

Allie: Okay. Sorry.

Chanel: Oh, yeah, do what you gotta do.

Allie: But if you have the documents, I can sign them now.

Chanel: Yeah, I’ve got them right here.

Allie: Great. All right, done and done. Here you go, boss.

Chanel: I kinda like the sound of that.

Allie: So do I.

[All laugh] Well, tripp and I should get going, but I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay?

Chanel: Yeah, okay. Sure.

Allie: Great. Bye.

Chanel: Tomorrow.

Marlena: Sami and lucas. I don’t believe it, I– I can’t believe that sami would do anything that would put her marriage to ej in jeopardy. I don’t understand.

John: I don’t understand it either, doc, but I’ll tell you something, for what it’s worth, I think samantha really regrets what she’s done.

Marlena: Of course she does.

John: No, but I’m saying it because ej told belle that sami claimed she wasn’t giving up. So when ej threw her out of the dimera mansion, apparently she went to gabi to seek permission to stay in the house.

Marlena: Oof.

Johnny: So mom cheated on you?

Ej: With your twin sister’s father. Jordan: Lucas.

Ej: Yes, lucas. Needless to say, I threw her out.

Johnny: I’m so sorry, dad, for both of you.

Ej: I’m sorry for you too, johnny, I know this can’t be easy to hear.

Johnny: It isn’t, but you and mom, you got one of those love that spans the ages kind of things, so, why isn’t she here, banging down the door, making a scene reminding you of that? Where is she? Is she staying at grandma marlena’s?

Ej: She could be there. Or with lucas. Or on the moon, for all I know.

Johnny: Huh. You really have no idea.

Ej: Nor do I give a damn.

Johnny: That’s harsh.

Ej: It is. I’m sorry, johnny. Samantha is your mother. I should refrain from speaking ill of her. And I will. And now, we should be celebrating your return. How about having a drink with your old man?

Johnny: All right.

[Both chuckle] None of that crap for me, though, I’m a single malt man these days.

Ej: [Laughs] So, tell me, what have you been up to?

Johnny: Well, I’m actually looking for investors.

Ej: That sounds enterprising. What for?

Johnny: My movie. And I’m giving you first crack at it.

Abe: All good?

Eli: Yeah, well, jules was a little fussy to begin with, but as soon as I started ruining “rock-a-bye baby,” she settled down.

Abe: I’ll have to try that some time.

Eli: Yeah.

Abe: You know, I can’t believe that lani went to see paulina. Last time we spoke, she was done with her. So what changed?

Eli: Well, lani and I talked, and she realized that she needed to forgive paulina for her own sake, as much as anything else.

Abe: I have a feeling that you guided her to that conclusion.

Eli: Yeah, I might’ve helped a little bit. But lani, she would’ve got there on her own. You know, as mad as she was at paulina, paulina is family, and that’s something that you can’t replace.

Paulina: What I want to say is that I–

Olivia: Eh, sweet pea, could you refresh my iced tea? Your tea really hits the spot. I’m absolutely parched.

Paulina: I thought you said it was too sweet.

Olivia: I said no such thing. Do you mind, sweetheart?

Lani: No, no, grandma. I’ll be right back.

Olivia: And could you find a little something for me to nibble on? I am famished.

Lani: Yes.

Paulina: Parched and famished?

Olivia: What I am is madder than a hornet in a coke can.

Paulina: Shh!

Olivia: You shush. If you think you’re gonna tell that child you’re her mother, you got another thing comin’, hear? We women are in the know about everything.

Marlena: Mm, I’m so glad to see you!

John: We are so relieved, sweetheart. You know what, it looks like you survived your ordeal okay, though.

Allie: Yeah. The hardest part was just being away from henry.

Marlena: Yeah, I’m sure he missed you too, didn’t you? Didn’t you?

Allie: Oh, he’s about to conk out, as you can see.

Marlena: Yeah. Should I put him in his crib for a little nap?

Allie: No, it’s okay. He sleeps pretty well in his stroller.

John: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Marlena: Yeah, my kids did, too. What can I get you? Would you like something? A cold drink? Something to eat tripp?

Tripp: No, no thank you.

Allie: Actually, I was hoping my mom might be here.

Marlena: No, she’s not.

Allie: Well, there was a situation between her and ej. I’ve been trying to contact her. Left voicemails, texts, but nothing.

Marlena: Yeah, honey, we know about the situation.

John: Yeah.

Marlena: Belle was talking to ej earlier, and he discussed it with her, and then she shared it with us.

Allie: So you know about my mom and my dad.

John: Mm-hmm.

Marlena: We do.

Allie: Right. Well, I was just with my dad, and he hasn’t seen mom since some blowout with ej. And then I went to ej’s, and he doesn’t know where she is, either.

Ej: You’re looking for investors for a movie.

Johnny: Yeah.

Ej: I didn’t know you were interested in filmmaking.

Johnny: Well, I’ve been hitting up a lot of art house theaters over the last couple of years and just binging all these cool film revivals. You know, the real classics, like fellini, godard, truffaut. Have you ever seen “8 1/2” or “400 blows”?

Ej: Can’t say that I have.

Johnny: Well, they’re incredible, life changing. Anyway, I was really inspired by what I saw, and made a couple shorts on my phone.

Ej: Your phone?

Johnny: Yes. And dad, I think I might be really good at it. I mean, obviously, I have a long way to go, I’m sure. I’m still a novice, but it feels like I’m meant to be doing this. Like I have something to contribute. So what do you say? Do you wanna invest in your son’s future?

Ej: Why don’t you come work for me instead?

Abe: I’m glad you were able to get through to lani. You know, I tried on more than one occasion, but she was not having it.

Eli: Yeah, my wife can be very stubborn.

Abe: Mm.

Eli: Wonder where she gets that from.

Abe: [Laughs] Well, I know lani can dig in her heels. And I also understand how much that she was hurt by paulina. We all were hurt. But paulina has apologized. Repeatedly. She even helped us find ciara, as you know. I mean, she has tried, obviously, to make amends.

Eli: Sounds like you’re pretty close to forgiving paulina yourself.

Abe: [Scoffs]

Paulina: You heard what lani said, mama. She’s willing to forgive me if there are no more secrets and lies, that’s why I have to be honest with that child. I owe her the truth.

Olivia: The hell you do. You’re doing this for yourself. It may make you feel better to let her know you’re her mama, but she would be losing the only mother she’s ever known.

Lani: Here you go, big mama.

Olivia: Thank you, sweetheart. Mmm. This hits the spot. Just what I needed.

Lani: So, what did you need to tell me, aunt paulina? Did you know that your toughest cleaning problems

[Melancholy music]

Chanel: [Sighs] What is wrong with you, dupree? Get over it already.

Marlena: Wait, so ej said sami never came back from gabi’s?

Allie: No. And I went to gabi, and she said she never even saw mom.

Tripp: I know that your mom wanted to fight to get ej back, but could she have just changed her mind and took off to cool down?

Marlena: No. No, when sami gets her mind set on something, she never gives up.

Allie: Especially if she’s fighting for someone she loves. I mean, do you think something could’ve happened to her? Like maybe she got in an accident on her way to gabi’s?

Marlena: No, no. We would’ve heard that by now.

John: Or ej wasn’t telling the truth.

Allie: What do you mean?

John: Isabella said that ej was furious and he’s never been one to let people cross him and get away with it.

Allie: What are you saying? Oh, my god. Do you think ej could’ve done something to hurt mom?

Johnny: You want me to work for you.

Ej: This great company is your legacy, son. And with me back at the helm, we can turn dimera into a true family business again. Do you know how proud your nonno would be if he were here? To not only have his son back where he belongs, but his grandson, too?

[Laughs] Oh, how your nonno loved you. His little giovanni.

Johnny: Yeah, well, I’m not little giovanni anymore, and if you think I’m gonna suit up and punch the clock every day–

Ej: It’s so much more than that.

Johnny: Not to me. Look, I get how dimera’s so important to you and how passionate you are about it, but that’s how I feel about making movies.

Ej: You mean fooling around on your phone. That’s making movies?

Johnny: It’s not fooling around, and I resent that you said that. Legitimate directors make movies on their phones.

Ej: I don’t know how legitimate they are if I’ve never heard of them. Or were these people you met while bumming around in europe? I’m sure you found no shortage of dilettantes willing to sponge off their parents’ money, but no way in hell is any son of mine going to waste his time on something so frivolous.

Johnny: It’s not frivolous. This movie is important to me. Not that I expect you to care. You never have cared about what I wanted or needed. This is all about your ego turning me into somebody who has to defer to you to make you feel more powerful. Well, to hell with that. I don’t need your money. I’ll just ask mom.

Ej: Good luck finding her.

Abe: You know, as hurt and angry as I was at paulina… I’ve seen her kindness. Her generosity of spirit. And now that I know more about her history, I understand why she acted the way she has.

Eli: So is that a yes? You’re ready to forgive her?

Abe: Well, I would like nothing more than to repair my relationship with paulina. But as angry as lani is, I– I’m reluctant.

Eli: Well, with any luck, lani is on her way to forgiving paulina right now. And then you and paulina can reconcile.

Paulina: I just wanted to say I– I promise you, I’ll never, ever lie to you again, and if I do, may god strike my mama dead.

Lani: Well, no, we don’t want anything to happen to big mama, now, do we?

Paulina: Ohh, certainly not. That old battle-axe, she’ll outlive us all. I say that with all the love in my heart.

Olivia: I’m sure you do.

Paulina: So, um… hon, do you forgive me?

Lani: Yes, I do.

Paulina: Can we start over?

Lani: We can.

Paulina: Ohh. Oh, you’ve made me happier than you can imagine. Well, can we just– can we seal all this love with a little squeeze?

Lani: Come here.

[Both laugh] I’ve got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Paulina: Ohh. Aw, you will not be sorry, my darling, you see, for once, I learned my lesson. And I will never, ever stop trying to make it up to you. All those times that I let you down, so whatever you want, whatever you need–

Lani: Auntie, auntie, all you have to do is just be honest with me, okay? No lies, no checks, no gifts. Just honesty.

Paulina: And you will get exactly that from this moment forward, nothing but the truth, so help me god.

Olivia: No need to be so dramatic.

Lani: Auntie?

Paulina: Yes, baby doll?

Lani: Dad told me why money and being in control is so important to you.

Paulina: He–he told you about ray?

Lani: Yeah.

Paulina: Well… being in an abusive relationship like that, I was trapped for so long, well, it–it forced me to make some difficult choices.

Olivia: And that’s all in the past. What matters now is you two have found the love again. Now, I don’t wanna be rude, but after my trip, big mama really needs to rest.

Lani: Yes, of course, big mama. I love you so much.

Olivia: I love you too, baby girl.

Lani: Oh, I cannot wait for you to meet eli and our babies. How long are you staying?

Olivia: Oh, depends.

Lani: On what?

Olivia: On how long I have to keep my eye on this one.

Marlena: Look, I’m sure that if ej knows where sami is, john will find out. I’m also very sure that she knows we’re concerned about her.

Allie: Very concerned. To not tell us where she is or how she’s doing– grandma, I just hope she’s okay.

Marlena: Well, sami has a way of taking care of herself. I have to assume she’s just preferring to be alone right now and trying to sort out what’s happened.

[Baby crying]

Allie: [Sighs] He must’ve not gotten a good nap.

Marlena: Why don’t I take him and get him to calm down some?

Allie: Yeah, that’d be great. Thank you.

Marlena: You ready? Hm? Okay, you and me. Come on. Bedtime story.

Allie: [Exhales]

Tripp: I’m with your grandma. I think it’s too soon to be worrying about your mom.

Allie: But tripp, she didn’t even come to the police station when I got arrested. You know, to yell at rafe and tick everyone off until they just let me go to shut her up. It’s so not like her to just disappear like this.

Tripp: Look, I don’t know your mom as well as you do, obviously, but like your grandma said, I mean, she just needs some time by herself to recharge.

Allie: I suppose. I guess I’ll just have to believe that at any minute, she could call or text or show up here.

Tripp: Right, right. And until she does, we need to try to stay positive. Okay? And just know that she’s all right, she’s just going through a really tough time.

Allie: Okay.

Tripp: You wanna get some takeout after this thing with henry?

Allie: That sounds good.

Tripp: What?

Allie: Do you think we should’ve gotten dinner with chanel?

Tripp: I think she understood why we couldn’T.

Allie: She said she did. I don’t want her to think I was blowing her off. I mean, she looked, I don’t know, like, sad?

Tripp: Yeah, well, I’m sure she was disappointed. I mean, even though you’ve been very clear that you don’t like her like that, she still probably isn’t over her feelings yet.

Allie: Right.

[Sighs] Which, you know, makes everything weird, for me, especially. I just always feel like I’m gonna say something or do something and give her the wrong idea.

Tripp: And think there might be something between you, you mean.

Allie: Yeah, that’s what I meant. I just wish it was like the old days, you know? Horton and dupree, just fun and good times.

Tripp: You’ll get there again. And who knows, maybe chanel will meet someone. I mean, doesn’t everybody say the best way to get over somebody is to meet somebody new?

Johnny: Bartender, hello? God, who do I have to sleep with to get a drink around here?

Chanel: Don’t look at me.

Johnny: Oh. Hi.

Chanel: Bad day?

Johnny: You could say that. You look like you had a bad one yourself.

Chanel: You could say that.

Johnny: You mind?

Chanel: Nope. So what happened to you that’s so awful that you’re yelling for a drink?

Johnny: Ah, fight with my old man–money.

Chanel: Been there, done that, with my mom.

Johnny: Sounds like we got something in common.

John: Hello, ej. Harold let me in.

Ej: What can I do for you, john?

John: I wanna ask you about samantha.

Ej: I’m not really in the mood to discuss samantha right now.

John: I’m well aware of your situation.

Ej: I assume belle told you.

John: She did, yeah. And I can only assume what you’re going through. But right now, doc and I are really concerned with samantha, and we haven’t heard a word from her since this whole thing went down.

Ej: The last I knew she went to go see gabi hernandez to ask her permission to stay in this house.

John: Yeah, well, you know, that’s just the thing. You see, allie talked to gabi, and sami never showed up.

Ej: Well, then, I guess she changed her mind. Decided that staying here under the circumstances would be extremely awkward, if not unbearable.

John: Yeah. Could be she decided that. But, you know, then you’d think, why wouldn’t she come see me or her mother? Or her daughter? Or at least be in touch and not go awol, ’cause you know it’s not like samantha just to give up without a fight.

Ej: Unless she knew it was a losing battle. I can understand why she wouldn’t contact you, but none of us? Her daughter? Her mother? So, elvis john, are you sure that you don’t have any idea where sami could be right now?

Ej: What exactly are you insinuating, john?

John: I’m not insinuating anything. But you and sami were obviously upset, tempers get hot.

Ej: So what? You think I killed her? Buried her corpse in the tunnels?

John: I’m just trying to figure out where the hell sami can be.

Ej: No! What you’re doing is accusing me of withholding information from you or worse, suggesting that I went ballistic and did something terrible to her. Well, that is not the case. Samantha is the one who cheated on me, so I told her to get the hell out and that our marriage was over, and that was the last I saw of her and the last I hope to see of her again. So why don’t you take your concerns and your insinuations and get the hell out?

[Glass shatters]

Chanel: All better now?

Johnny: It’s a start. So, you wanna tell me about your bad day?

Chanel: Not really.

Johnny: Well, whatever it is, it looks like you just lost your best friend.

Chanel: Yeah, uh, well, not exactly. I just kind of had a relationship end before it really started.

Johnny: Ah, that’s terrible. But to make it all about me, does that mean you’re single?

Chanel: Oh, wow! You cut right to the chase, don’t you?

Johnny: Well, beautiful girl sitting next to me, why waste time, you know? A meteor could strike tomorrow, we’d all be ashes.

Chanel: Does that line usually work for you?

Johnny: About 90% of the time.

Chanel: Guess I’m the other 10%.

Johnny: And that is why I now have new respect for you. Can I at least buy you a drink?

Chanel: Why not?

Johnny: Okay.

Lani: How’s theo?

Abe: Struggling. And I’m sure he will be for a while, but he knows he has his family.

Lani: Yeah.

Abe: Speaking of which–

Lani: Mm. Eli told you I went to see aunt paulina.

Abe: He did. So how did it go?

Lani: Well, for starters, my grandmother is here.

Eli: Olivia?

Lani: Mm-hmm.

Eli: I thought she wasn’t well enough to travel.

Lani: Well, apparently she’s doing much better.

Paulina: You satisfied, mama?

Olivia: With this tea? No. With you keeping your mouth shut, absolutely. So what, now you’re gonna sit there and sulk all night?

Paulina: Do you know what it feels like to just be looking into your daughter’s eyes and she–she not know that I’m her mama? Wanting so badly to tell her. After all these years and years of suffering and longing, to just feel like I just let her down.

Olivia: You’re doing the right thing, honey. If you told lani the truth, she’d not only be losing her mother, she’d be losing her father, too. With voltaren arthritis pain gel

Eli: So how’d it go with your aunt?

Lani: I took your advice and I told her I forgive her for everything, that way we can start fresh with a clean slate. No more lies, no more secrets. And she promised.

Eli: Mm.

Abe: Wow, I know that wasn’t easy.

Eli: That’s great.

Abe: I’m very proud of you, sweetheart.

Lani: Thank you. Well, I have a pretty smart husband here. And my dad is the most amazing dad in the world. And you guys know how much family means to me, and I wanna show that to my babies. I wanna set the example.

Abe: Aw, hey, I love you. So much.

Olivia: And how do you think she’d feel if she found out abraham carver isn’t her father?

Paulina: I imagine she wouldn’t be too pleased with me.

Olivia: He wouldn’t be too pleased with you, either. Listen, baby, I love you. But it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie. You understand?

Allie: Is henry asleep?

Marlena: I couldn’t even get through a chapter. He was out like a light.

Allie: Oh, thank you.

Marlena: Of course. Did you talk to ej?

Allie: Does he know where my mom is?

John: Well, he’s sticking to his story, sweetheart. Said the last time he saw sami, she was headed to gabi’S. When I pressed him on it, he– let’s just say he wasn’t too happy that I suggested he was lying.

Tripp: Did you believe him?

John: It’s tough to tell with ej, kid.

Allie: That still doesn’t explain why she hasn’t texted, why there’s no calls.

[Phones beeping]

Marlena: Oh.

Allie: Oh, my god. It’s mom.

John: Here we go.

Marlena: Oh, mine is, too. All right. “I’m sure everyone knows what’s happened between ej and me. I appreciate your concern, but I’m not up to answering your calls and texts. As much as I wanna fight for my marriage, I realize that it’d only make things worse. The best thing for me right now is to be alone, to figure things out. If you don’t hear from me for a while, please understand. I love you. Sami.”

John: Well. Guess that kinda solves it.

Allie: I guess so.

Marlena: At least we know she’s safe.

[Dark music]

Ej: Now that that’s settled, tell me, father… what are we going to do about giovanni?

Johnny: [Chuckles] Wow, that is embarrassing.

Chanel: Hey, at least they didn’t cut your card up in front of you and an audience. Now that is embarrassing.

Johnny: It sounds like you have experience.

Chanel: My mom.

Johnny: Right? Yeah, my dad. You know, it’s just him trying to flex his muscles and show me who’s boss. I turned down his offer to work for the family company. Son of a bitch cuts me off.

Chanel: Well, it’s all good. I got this.

Johnny: No, I can’t let you do that.

Chanel: I don’t think you have much of a choice.

Johnny: Thank you. Can I at least have your name so I know who I’m indebted to?

Chanel: Chanel.

Johnny: Pretty.

Chanel: My mom loved coco chanel, so–

Johnny: Well, it’s nice to meet you, chanel. I’m named after my grandfather, john, but my other grandfather used to call me giovanni.

Chanel: Oh, giovanni.

Johnny: Yeah. I’ll put it in your phone so you don’t forget.

Chanel: Giovanni is not exactly easy to forget.

Johnny: Well, I hope not.
