[laughter] And I’ll be right there to help you. I should just change first because this outfit’s a little– you know.

No, no, no, no, no, no, uh-uh, no, no. I promised you that I would make you dinner, and I intend to keep that promise. So don’t even think for a second about trying to help me, OK?

OK. Understood, Chef Black. Second of all?

Second of all, why would we bother putting on more clothes when we’re only gonna be taking them off?

Well, it’s just–

Hey, if you’re feeling self-conscious about only being half-dressed, then… I guess I’ll just have to join you.

Oh. [laughs]

I can’t wait to be with you tonight.

Neither can I. [wistful music]

Hey, Doug. Whatcha reading?

Oh, hey, JJ. Just looking at this song that Grandpa Doug wrote for Julie.

Can I see?

Yeah. Wow, this is–this is great. I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before. Or heard the song, for that matter.

Well, the book I found it in was left behind at the Horton Cabin about a year ago. I went to go get it for Julie, but by the time I got back, she was already in bed. So I figured I’ll just give it to her tomorrow morning.

That’s nice of you to go get it for her, though. Was that your first time over at the Horton Cabin?

Sure was, yeah.

Did you manage to get back before dark? I know things can get a little spooky when you’re up there by yourself.

Well, actually, it wasn’t just me. I also ran into Holly Jonas. [suspenseful sting]

Jada, hi. Sorry, I didn’t realize that you were home. Can I pour you a glass of wine?

Oh, thanks, but I’m good. I’m actually heading out.

Oh. Is this–

Yeah. This is the last of it. [sighs] And then I’ll be officially moved out.

Ooh, Abe, I can’t tell you how glad I am that Chanel is moving back in with Johnny, oh. Not that I was put out by, you know, being her host here, of course, oh, but I’m just so– so happy to see the two of them finally get back on track. Mm. Oh. Oh, Abe, I’m so sorry. Here I am, chattering on about Johnny and Chanel, and I haven’t even taken a moment to check in on you about “Body & Soul.” Oh, I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to give it up.

Yeah. It was hard. You know I’m always– I will always be proud of the work we did.

Mm.

And it was the right decision.

Well, I must say, if there is one bright side to “Body & Soul” leaving town, it’s that I get to spend some quality time alone with my handsome husband.

[chuckles] Well, you know what? I will drink to that.

Mm-hmm.

Mm. [knock on door] Oh, apparently, I spoke too soon.

All right. [groans] Yeah, OK. [tense music]

Hi, Mom, it’s me. I’m just checking in. I know you’re probably missing Dad today, and trust me, we all are. But I know he’s doing everything he can to get back to us because he misses us, too. Anyway, I just stopped to get a quick drink on my way home from work, and I don’t really know when I’m gonna be home. So if you get this before I see you, just don’t wait up for me, OK? I love you. Bye.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the new Ms. Salem DA.

[clears throat]

Mind if I join you?

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[soft dramatic music]

Ah. I needed that.

Tough day?

I tell you, I cannot believe there are so many damn criminals in this town. I mean, give a guy a break. They’re nearly killing me.

You’ve been on the force for years. You’re just now realizing there’s a problematic workload?

Yeah, well, you know, it– listen, a coma, it can really do a number on a guy. And it definitely did a number on me. So it’s just taking a while to get back into the swing of things.

Right.

Yeah, especially after that train wreck that Jada left at the police department, and, you know, after she stole my job. So, yeah, no surprise that I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed.

You know that Jada didn’t set out to steal your job, right?

Oh. I get it. OK. Team backstabber, huh? Mm-hmm. Well, you know what? It’s no surprise, considering that, uh, you pulled the exact same stunt with EJ.

[scoffs]

Madam Mayor, I, uh, hope I’m not interrupting.

Do you have any idea what day this is?

I do, actually. Happy Valentine’s Day to you both. I hope you’ll accept this as a token of my sincerest apologies for interrupting your evening. However, I thought you might want to discuss this matter privately and in person.

Uh, what matter? [scoffs] What do you want?

I’m here to talk to you about Jada Hunter.

Are you sure you have to move out?

Beyond sure. This is the last place that I want to be right now. No offense.

No, I completely understand. I guess I was just hoping that if Rafe were to come home, the two of you could still–

Work things out? Yeah. You know, if this was a few days ago, I might have agreed with you. But now, every conversation I have with that man, it just gets worse every time. I even returned the engagement ring last night. I mean, “return” is a bit generous. I pretty much tossed it at him.

If you don’t mind my asking, what did he say this time to get you so worked up?

I tried to talk to him about EJ setting me up. And you know what he said? He told me that I should just let it go.

What? He said that?

I know, right? I mean, not only did his feelings for me just magically vanish, he has now allied himself with EJ– EJ DiMera, of all people, a man that he supposedly despises.

I don’t get that.

Yeah. Shawn, he thinks that maybe his coma possibly altered his personality somehow, but I don’t know. Just thinking about this just makes my head hurt.

Jada… I’m so sorry. If there’s anything that I can do…

You know, at this point, to be honest, I just want this–just all of this to be over with. You know, after Bobby, I can’t go through this again. I can’t. So it’s–I think it’s time that I just move on. Get over it. Move on.

Jada Hunter.

What about her?

[clears throat] Put simply, you have a crisis on your hands. Now, we all knew from the very beginning you putting Jada in Rafe’s job was a huge misstep.

Oh, please.

You’ve already had to eat crow and suspend her. And to make matters worse, you replaced her with Rafe Hernandez, the very man you had her replace just a few months earlier.

I do not need a former district attorney to tell me how to do my job.

I’m merely a concerned citizen.

Concerned about what, exactly? You know, not too long ago, your concern nearly ousted Paulina as mayor.

I have no desire to retread that line of events. Believe me. I simply want to help the good people of Salem the best way I know how.

[chuckles] And how’s that?

Well, as you so kindly pointed out, I formerly served this great city as district attorney. And at the time, I was working alongside the current police commissioner, Rafe Hernandez.

So?

So you gave him his job back. How about giving me mine back, too?

What stunt did I supposedly pull on EJ?

Not supposedly. You stole his job.

I did not steal his job. Paulina offered it to me. I just accepted it.

OK, I think you mean Paulina and Jada. And from what I understand, Jada orchestrated the whole thing. You know why?

Yes, because she was trying to protect the department from EJ’s corruption.

No, no, because she wanted a DA that would kowtow to her, one that would look the other way so she could have the free rein to do whatever it was that she wanted.

Oh, come on, Rafe. You don’t really believe that, do you?

Well, you know, all the pieces, they do fit together nicely, wouldn’t you agree?

No. I would not agree. And I don’t think you do either. So why don’t you tell me what is going on?

I can’t imagine what this must be like for you. You and Rafe really seemed like such a great couple up until recently.

It’s fine, honestly. I’m just thankful that he showed me his true colors before we officially got married.

Well, it’s my brother’s loss. You deserve the best. I hope you know that.

Thanks. So do you. [clears throat] Speaking of, how are things going with you and JJ?

[sighs] That is a very good question.

Holly was up there, huh? I suppose she got the key from Maggie. Was she just hanging out, or…

Uh, she was waiting on her boyfriend, Tate Black.

You and Tate friends?

Not exactly. He and Holly were apparently planning to meet at the cabin for some sort of romantic Valentine’s Day rendezvous.

Mm-hmm. Unless I’m imagining things, I’d say you’re not too happy about that, are you?

Mm, that was amazing.

Yeah?

Seriously, I could eat it every day for the rest of my life. What’s it called again?

It’s spaghetti Bolognese.

Ah, very fancy.

I mean, it’s just spaghetti with red sauce, but it is one of my best dishes.

And how many dishes are we talking exactly?

OK, you don’t have to call me out like that.

I’m just wondering. [laughter]

However, I am a little bit out of my comfort zone when it comes to dessert. So I did go with the store-bought option this time. So I hope that’s OK.

Actually, I was kind of hoping we could skip dessert and go straight to something else. [sultry music]

Wow. You look– I don’t even have the words.

Then don’t use any words.

[gentle music]

You are so beautiful.

Finally found those words, huh?

[laughs]

So are you ready?

Yeah. You?

Yeah.

[sultry music]

You sure that you feel safe about this?

Yeah. I’m on the pill.

OK. Great.

Don’t worry, Tate. Nothing’s gonna go wrong. It’s gonna be perfect.

Well, it–it was just awkward, that’s all. I basically barged in on their romantic getaway. And then I made it even worse by–

By what?

Well, we were standing there looking at these romantic poems, and I just– I sort of let it slip that I have feelings for her.

Let it slip?

I basically just blurted it out. Man, it was so embarrassing.

No, hey, don’t sweat it. I’ve–I’ve been in basically the same situation you are right now.

Really?

A few times, actually.

OK, well, then, tell me, how do I get out of this?

Well, it depends. What’d Holly say?

Well, she didn’t really get a chance to say anything, because Tate walked in a minute later, and then I got the hell out of there. And look, I know that she is in a serious relationship, and I have absolutely no intention of getting between her and Tate. But I just– man, I don’t know what to do about these feelings.

Well, I think talking about them with someone other than Holly certainly helps. So anytime you need an ear, just– just let me know.

Well, thanks, man. I appreciate that. You know, I’m glad I was wrong about you.

What do you mean?

Well, ever since I came to Salem, I just– I had this feeling like you weren’t too sure about me.

In what way?

I don’t know, just, like, odd, I guess. But like I said, I’m glad I was wrong.

Actually, you weren’t wrong.

Huh?

I, uh– I feel a little weird telling you this, but I guess you deserve to know. I’ve, uh, sort of been keeping my eye on you.

You have? Why?

Well, to be honest, my mom thought you might have been the one who stole Julie’s necklace. [dramatic music]

I actually haven’t seen very much of JJ recently. I keep meaning to call him, but I know he’s been busy with his new job at Salem PD, and so I doubt he has any free time to spare. And it’s fine.

But it’s Valentine’s Day. It should be on him to make a little time. [knock on door]

Oh.

Hi. I have a delivery for Gabi Hernandez.

That’s me. Oh. [laughs] Aww. Thank you so much.

Have a great day.

Yeah, you too.

Mm. These are lovely. [sniffs] From JJ?

Yeah.

See? That’s what real boyfriends do.

Jada, I’m sorry. I, um–

No, no, no, please, don’t be. You should be happy. And you know what? I am glad that at least one of us is having a good Valentine’s Day.

Oh, you have got some nerve.

EJ, as urgent as this discussion may seem to you, why don’t we postpone it until, oh–

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, Abraham. It’s all right, all right? I already have an answer for him, and that answer is no way in hell.

Mm, do you really want Belle Black to continue in the position of district attorney, the woman handpicked by Jada Hunter before her history of lawbreaking was uncovered?

Ah–

What– what happens when Jada’s case goes to trial? Do you really think Belle will be prepared to prosecute?

I have complete faith in Belle Black.

Just like you had complete faith in Jada Hunter, right?

Jada Hunter’s case will be investigated thoroughly, intensively, and without bias.

[laughs] OK, OK.

I’m very confident that Belle Black and Rafe, for that matter, they will follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Hmm, so, uh, in other words, justice will never be served. OK. [tense music]

Nothing is going on. I just believe the evidence, that’s all. In fact, isn’t that what cops are supposed to do? Follow evidence?

And their intuition. I mean, I think any other cop with any sense would know that Jada would never do the thing she’s been accused of. I mean, Jada would never break rules to get ahead. She’s not ambitious like that. She’s just a–a hard worker and an honest cop and a really good friend.

Not ambitious? Not–wow, OK. You don’t really know Jada that well. You have never seen her go after something that she really wanted, something that she wouldn’t be denied?

I mean, like I said, she’s a hard worker. And, yeah, maybe she had her eye on the commissioner job a few years ago, but they gave it to Shawn instead.

Uh-huh. Yep. And, uh, how did little Ms. Hunter seem when she didn’t get it?

She was disappointed.

Mm.

Why wouldn’t she be?

OK. Well, I think that she was a little bit more than disappointed.

[scoffs]

Listen, I… you know, I heard that you and Shawn broke things off a few weeks ago, speaking of which, and, uh, I just want to say sorry. I know that’s got to be tough, especially on a day like today.

Suppose so. To be honest, I haven’t given it much thought.

Yeah. OK. You’re playing it tough. It’s good for you. But, you know, there’s no need to hold back on my account. Here you are. You’re all alone on the most romantic night of the year. You know, just– there’s no shame in wanting a little masculine comfort.

[gentle music]

[sighs]

[laughs]

Well, that was–

You don’t have the words?

Actually, I do have the words. That was everything I dreamed it would be, and more.

It was the same for me.

[sighs] God, I know it took a long time for us to get here, but I’m just so happy my first time was with you. It wouldn’t have been the same with anyone else. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, like, bring up–

Uh, no, no, it’s OK. I’m sorry. I wish I would have waited.

It’s OK. We don’t have to talk about it. I’m just glad we get to be together now, in this moment.

I agree. By the looks of things, I’d say I got here just in time tonight, huh?

What do you mean?

I just– I don’t know. When I first walked in on you and Doug, it just kind of seemed like he was about to make a move on you. [tense music] – Your mom thought I stole Julie’s necklace?

A lot of us did, actually. You remember that’s– that’s why I–

Why you asked me why I was in jail.

Yeah. Look, man, if it makes you feel better, and honestly, I hope it does, I don’t think that anymore. I’ve seen how you are with Julie, how much you care about her. And frankly, I really don’t think you’re capable of doing something like that to your family. Not back then, certainly not now.

JJ, I should probably tell you– [phone ringing]

Hold that thought. Hey.

Hey yourself. I just got your flowers. I can’t believe you remembered that lilies are my favorite.

Of course I remembered. And, hey, I’m so sorry. This is last minute. I just got off work, but would you want to go grab a drink somewhere?

How about here?

Your place?

Well, I kind of have the place to myself, more or less. And I have a bottle of wine with your name on it.

Well, then, how can I refuse? I’ll be right over.

Great. I’ll see you in a bit then. Bye. [soft music]

So he’s coming over?

Is that all right? I know you said you were on your way out, but if you wanted to stay, maybe the three of us could–

It’s fine, Gabi. Really, it’s fine. You and JJ enjoy your nice romantic Valentine’s evening alone. Besides, I have a very early start tomorrow.

Well, in that case, I just wanted to say, you know, Rafe may be my brother, and I know you and I may not legally be related. But regardless of all of that, I’m on your side on this 100%. No matter what happens.

Thank you, Gabi. That means a lot.

And don’t be a stranger, OK?

I won’t. I promise.

Paulina, do you mind if I handle this?

By all means.

EJ… [clears throat] You have some nerve showing up here tonight.

Oh, yes. I am terribly sorry for ruining your evening. How awful of me not to realize that the very fabric of our legal framework ranked lower on the list than, uh, good eating.

See, that’s the issue right there, pretending that this, all this, is about justice and community, when in reality, it’s all about you.

I beg your pardon?

EJ DiMera first, going all the way back to when you ran against me for mayor.

Now who’s the one making it all about themselves?

[scoffs] You know, I have a– I have a very capable wife. But this is my home, too. And I will take great pleasure in tossing you out of it. Now go. [soft dramatic music]

Fine. But self-serving or not, Madam Mayor, you know I’m right about Belle. Happy Valentine’s Day.

What the hell are you doing?

Sorry, what– did I miss something here? I thought I was catching a vibe.

Uh, not from me, you weren’t.

OK, well, all right. I just thought, you know, since I’m newly single, you’re newly single.

[scoffs] Well, that just gives you the right to hit on me like that?

All right, lady, take it easy.

No, you know what? You listen to me. That will never, ever happen again. And you and I will keep things professional between us, both in the office and out of the office, forever. [scoffs] What is going on with him?

You think Doug seemed like he was interested in me? [scoffs]

Yeah. It’s just, like, the vibe he gives off, the way he looks at you, like– just telling you, Holly, I think he has a thing for you.

I hope someone writes you a little inscription in a book like my grandfather did for Julie. “When I first saw you, that’s when I knew the truth. “You are the most beautiful, wonderful thing I’ve ever seen. And that’s all I ever need to know.”

Wow. Talk about big feelings. That’s pretty romantic.

Yeah, it is. And I feel the same way about you. [tender music]

When you came over on Christmas Eve, the moment I saw you, I just– I don’t know how to describe it. My heart skipped a beat.

I had no idea.

I’m such an idiot. I shouldn’t have said anything. You have a boyfriend. Can we just rewind five minutes and pretend that this never happened?

Actually, I don’t think I can, because I feel the same way about you.

Get a grip on it, Williams. She doesn’t feel that way about you. [somber music]

See? Now you get to enjoy them, too. And not only do they look beautiful, mm, but they smell amazing, too.

I smell something a little more. I’m gonna take a wild guess and say coconut.

Good guess.

Yeah?

Yeah. It’s one of our new scents at Gabi Chic. We were testing them out in the office today.

Well, if my vote counts, I’d definitely say it’s a winner. And listen, I’m– I’m sorry I haven’t been more in touch lately. I know we’ve both been really busy the past few weeks. But I, uh, don’t want you to get the wrong idea. It’s not a reflection of how I feel about you, about us. Not at all.

And how do you feel about us?

I feel very, very lucky to be here with you tonight.

I feel lucky, too.

Oh.

Mm.

Mm.

Well, I’m glad we got rid of our third wheel.

Oh, don’t remind me. Oh, lord in heaven. [shudders] Ooh, I really do hate that EJ DiMera. [imitates choking]

Do you think he had a point, though, about Belle?

Oh, of course not. He was just trying to save his own privileged hide, exactly like you said. Although…

Although what?

He really did seem kind of desperate this time, you know, to get the DA job back. I mean, if a man like EJ DiMera is fishing around for power over the prosecution, then it’s likely a sign that he’s been up to no good. Now, the question is, what did he do this time? [tense music]

Well, I just hope that your mother can handle looking after both Ava and Rafe. But given their history, she doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, now, does she? [sighs] But we don’t really have much choice in the matter. Yes, you’re right. I agree. We need to come up with a long-term plan. Those two can’t stay locked up in your family’s summer home forever. [doorbell rings] I’ve got to go. We’ll talk more about this when you get back from work. [sighs] Belle. I wasn’t expecting to see you tonight.

Yes, well, I thought you ought to know that your newfound friend Rafe has one hell of a nerve.

He’s not my friend.

Oh, he is such a colossal jerk.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Calm down. Tell me what happened.

OK. I was at Small Bar, trying to enjoy a drink, alone, when he came over and started badgering me with a bunch of talk about Jada and the mayor. And then he just, like– he leaned in, and without any warning, he just–

What? Tell me.

He made a pass at me. He kissed me.

I’m going to kill him. [tense music]

Oh, hey there, Jadacakes. Long time no see. What’s up?

First of all, cut it out with the Jadacakes crap.

Well, come on. What, you still angry about what happened yesterday?

Second of all, FYI, I am all cleared out of your house. Any shred of evidence of our shared life together has either been moved out, torn up, or thrown out. It’s all yours now.

All mine, huh? Huh. So where exactly are you moving?

Not that it’s any of your business–

Yeah?

But Stephanie is letting me crash on her couch for a few days until I find a place of my own.

All right. Well, you can have a new place right away if you play your cards right.

What?

I got a big comfy bed right inside. You’re more than welcome to share it.

You know, whatever EJ is up to, I’m sure we’ll know soon enough.

Mm. Yeah, well, he and the rest of the people in Salem can rest assured I will not be giving him that DA job back– no way, no how. Oh, I won’t be making that mistake again.

[chuckle] Yeah, you know, sweetheart, I am, um– I’m sorry if I stepped on your toes when I told him off.

Oh, are you kidding? My big bad husband standing up to big bad EJ DiMera? [both chuckle] Well, it’s the best Valentine’s Day gift a girl could ask for.

Oh.

My heart is still beating a mile a minute just thinking about it.

Oh, well, maybe we should have a glass of wine just to calm you down.

Mm-mm! Mm-mm, I don’t want to calm down. I would rather get fired up for my hot husband.

Well, I do think that could be arranged. [chuckles]

[grunts]

Wait, wait, wait. Where are you going?

You said Rafe was at Small Bar, right?

OK, I don’t need you to rush off and fight my battles for me–I handled it.

Look, I’m sorry, Belle, but I’m afraid you don’t understand–

No, I understand just fine. And I think it’s very sweet that you want to stand up for me, but you don’t have to. Not in this instance, anyway.

You think I’m sweet, do you?

I suppose that’s what I said.

[sighs] Well, I mean, you’re certainly right about one thing. I do want to stand up for you, but not because I don’t think you can handle yourself, but because I care about you, Belle.

See? Sweet.

[chuckles] I also don’t like the idea of someone else kissing you on Valentine’s Day.

Oh, no? Who should it be, then?

Oh, well, let me show you.

Are you serious right now? Did I not make myself clear last night when I threw my ring at you and slapped you across the face? Or do you need a reminder?

Hey, I am just trying to help you out by giving you a place to stay, OK? You don’t have to be such a bitch about it.

You know what? You are an even bigger ass than I realized. I am sorry I ever met you.

[scoffs] Women. [scoffs]

So…

So?

So what were you thinking? We could, uh, order in, watch a movie, or, uh…

Do this? [tender music]

I’m sorry. That was a stupid thing to bring up.

No, it’s OK. It’s good we talk about these things. And for the record, Doug is just a friend, nothing more. So you don’t have anything to worry about, OK?

OK. Then I won’t worry. All right. I have good news, and I also have bad news. The good news is, uh, we still have that delicious dessert that I bought for us. The bad news is if we want to eat it, we should probably grab it now before we have to catch the last ferry home.

Whew, well, if that’s the case, I say let’s skip the dessert.
