I\u2019m cool with that. I can even give you a referral, if you like, but in the meantime, these vitamin supplements, they\u2019re good for energy. I\u2019ve seen help out other patients deal with fatigue while undergoing chemo. Now, it\u2019s just two a day \u2014 one in the morning and one at night. I\u2019ll leave them right there for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> Thank you, sir. That\u2019s very kind, but I know you\u2019re the new big-shot at the hospital. You\u2019re chief of surgery, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> Well, so I would imagine you have more important things to do than tucking me in for a post-chemo nap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> Uh, not right now. I\u2019m off duty. And I wanted to get you out of there. I know a man of your stature likes to project strength, and I\u2019m sure you didn\u2019t want anyone seeing you struggle like that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland<\/strong>: That\u2019s very thoughtful of you. Thank you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> But you need to remember that chemotherapy doesn\u2019t care about appearances or how tough you are because chemo can be tougher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> Dr. Hastings, I\u2019m beginning to realize that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">********************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> I, uh, injured my hand last year. Still can\u2019t operate. My whole world was wrapped around me being a surgeon, and suddenly I can\u2019t perform surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> And you were able to get past it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> Took a while, but i learned I had to be honest with myself about my limitations. I had to learn how to ask for help when it was needed. It\u2019s not a sign of weakness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> You sound like Victoria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> [ Chuckles ] I\u2019m no oncologist, but I\u2019ve seen enough cases that each round of chemo you go through can be different. There\u2019s nothing to be gained by pretending you\u2019re dealing with it better than you are and there\u2019s no shame in admitting that this sucks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> You know, you\u2019re asking me to unlearn decades of behavior. That\u2019s a big change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> Well, your life has changed. You need to recognize that and be honest with yourself about it. Being stoic may only prolong your agony. And your doctors might be able to make it a little better if you\u2019re open with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> Noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate:<\/strong> Same goes for Victoria. I personally understand the instinct to want to hide the worst of your situation from her, but don\u2019t. She\u2019s an ally. Let her help you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashland:<\/strong> You were right, doctor.
